Title: Rusting Mounting Plate
Post by: TheInverseKey on Sun, 18 February 2018, 18:21:43
Hi,

I have come across a keyboard that has a lot of rust around all of the key switches and it seems like the rust starts under the paint.  I was wondering if rust really has an impact on the keyboards life?

Thanks

Probably not, especially if it's now in a good environment and doesn't go any further.

It's not likely to rust through any time soon, I'd be a bit concerned about paint chips and contaminants shorting something, but even that is pretty unlikely.

And yes, it's under the paint, the only fix is desolder the switches, strip it, treat it then re-paint it again. Very few keyboards using a steel plate, especially one that is rusting due to poor finish quality, is really worth that kind of effort.
