Those look like the switches used in the DEC VT-100. Inside the plastic border there are two arms with electrical contacts on them. The depression of the border causes the two arms to move together until they meet and the circuit is made.

Did I mention that they're boring linear switches?

Ah, same concept as Space Invader Switches then.
