No new posts since 01-Mar (coming up for three days).
Doesn't seem like any new comments either.
Anyone know what happened?
-
It first worked intermittently for me, being very slow or giving me "502 Bad Gateway". Then I got an error "Slashdot is in offline mode" when trying to log in to post a comment.
I think the two highest stories were posted after my first problems began and some other people's posts must have got through but I'm not sure ...

They are under a DDOS attack.
As has Github for the last few days.
Last week it was the entire internet, the guys doing it have gotten progressively better at it. Github was hit with a 1.35 terabits per second.
-
Been ages since I've seen Slashdot brought up in discussion. Surprised anyone would care to DDoS them.
-
Not sure why they got hit by a DDOS but in any case they've started to publish interesting content again. Just one example:

Are you apologising for scaring them away, but actually not being sorry?

They've been on a downward slide for years, especially once they changed owners.
While some DDOS are done as retribution or anger over what they represent, most these days are for extortion purposes.

That's sad.
Also we host our stuff from work on GitHub - haven't really noticed any slowdowns, but then I haven't committed much this week.
Thanks for the heads-up.
Although you would have thought they'd post a static message or something on the site - no new articles for 3 days and counting now.

You're welcome.
Every company reacts differently, some may not want to give them the satisfaction, or maybe they are unable or spending all their time fighting it. Hard to say.

They are back up. They claim to have had a DDOS attack while doing a server migration.
-
Yes, for those that don't check, or in case they go down again, this was the announcement:
Obviously Slashdot has had some issues the past couple days. For those wondering, we inherited an aging hardware setup in the acquisition that was located physically far away from us. We made a big investment in a new hardware set up, and ran into sizable issues including a massive DDOS during the migration process. Going forward we expect much better uptime. If we inconvenienced anyone, we're sorry. If it's any consolation, it wasn't fun for us either, and our team worked non-stop for days to get Slashdot back online. With our new infrastructure in place, we will be dedicating a lot of time and resources this year to improving Slashdot.
