Title: LED strip for Contra keyboard build
Post by: bitzie on Fri, 23 March 2018, 21:11:39
So I just finished building my Contra keyboard. I wanted to add an RGB strip to it for giggles and I think I ended up ordering the wrong strip. This is what I bought: http://www.canadarobotix.com/led-lighting/2317 (http://www.canadarobotix.com/led-lighting/2317). In my excitement to buy it I didn't notice it isn't the 5v strip that the tutorial shows here: https://cartel.ltd/projects/contra/#tab_contra_rgb (https://cartel.ltd/projects/contra/#tab_contra_rgb) In the description of the strip it does say "Maximum 12V per strip segment." Can the Contra and Pro Micro run this at 5v? If so, how would I be wiring this up since it has more connectors than the 5v strip? Here's a pic of the 12v strip connectors: https://i.imgur.com/DZcGZsh.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/DZcGZsh.jpg) I do figure I need to grab a new strip, but just trying to make double sure. Thanks!

If the minimum forward voltage for those LEDs is not provided, the LEDs won't light up at all. You need to know what LEDs are those and then look up in the datasheet although, being the maximum 12V, I doubt they work at 5V.

Thanks. I didn't have high hopes for being able to use them, but wanted to double check. The strip will go into a drawer for some future project. I ordered the proper strips last night and they should be here in a few weeks.
