Uniform Cherry Profile : Dolch? Beige?
With all the hype from people about new keycap profiles I am here to propose something a tad different with an existing profile we all know and love: Uniform Cherry.
I am proposing to do a set using all Row 4 keycaps (https://i.imgur.com/Vv6jAhz.png) (bottom row) making it completely uniform. This allows less keys in the full kit to cover more boards similar to DSA sets, whilst keeping some angle to the typing experience.
Why Row 4?
That is simple: Because the keycaps/molds already exist in all sizes in R4: 1u | 1.25u | 1.5u | 1.75u | 2u | 2.25u | 2.75u | 6u | 6.25u | 7u
Cost?
Still TBD - Still kicking tires with the idea to see if its worth pursuing further.
Some may be worried about spending too much on something they will dislike; thus I propose that the initial run we do a small kit that can cover 65% and smaller boards, so the debut of a uniform cherry set isn't as harsh on the wallet.
Material?
With the goal of keep cost down I'd like to do a PBT Dyesub kit. I have spoken to a company that believes they can do some good reverse dye sub, so I'd like to challenge them with doing a Dolch style reverse dye sub. If that is unrealistic then a plain beige ala Enjoy PBT set will have to do.
Kit?
65% and smaller; feedback welcome but know I want to keep the kit as small as reasonably possible with covering as many common compact boards as we can.
Option 1 - Plain Beige

Option 2 - Dolch

But my ORTHO! But my 38.35%!
Like I said kit is open for discussion, but we can't add too many keys so this can be cheap cheap cheap!
(PS - Love note from a non 40% user here; can you 40% keyboard designers get on the same page when it comes to keysizes??? k thx bye)

Are you nuts?
Probably but I have tested the theory out mix and matching a bunch of other sets and I am quite satisfied. Granted its not 100% like Cherry but the uniform sculpt is better than flat DSA anyday. :thumb:

I'd be interested on the 60% Dolch version, but could you do matching green alphas instead ala green on dolch? :D

Sorry Charlie. Trying to keep it plain jane.

homing keys.

How about the bar/scoop F/J? is that possible?
but I think this should be minimum investment :)
Edit: didn't notice it was asked too.

homing keys.
Yeah, I forgot to mention homing keys. We will have to inquire with the manufacturer as to feasibility of R4 homing keys.

as far as I know the asdf row feels like more like a uniform profile than this, and I've tried it

I get that the R4 molds are convenient, but I can't honestly imagine that slope being a comfortable typing experience on the upper rows (edge-hitting seems like it'd be pretty common). R2 would probably be the best choice since it's more neutral than R3/4 but not as tall as R1.

Hm, I can't really imagine this to feel good to type on... I need to set up that profile at home later and give it a try.
-
That keyboard picture makes it look like typewriter profile, was that actually comfortable to type on?
-
If there are "T" and "N" homing keys (with bars preferably) i'm in.
Probably wouldn't hurt to put dvorak homing keys as well or even some blank homing keys. This set could be a great thing for alternate layout users that prefer cylindrical caps.

I ordered a bunch of R3 and R4 blanks from KBDFans to test out. So far so good -- definitely in for this.
