Title: Try new keyboards and switches!! Meetup with your local geekhack members!!
Post by: kohan69 on Mon, 12 April 2010, 21:01:23
Hello geekhack, I think we should have some kind of meets where new members like me could try out different keyboards, to know what board we want to buy - and a social gathering of course.

I'm in the Los Angeles area - anyone else?

what we need is a google-map mashup of our zipcodes so we can see locations. Then we could do things like identify clusters of members, and then organize meetups for those clusters. (And people not in clusters would know where nearest cluster was).

so who knows how to make a google-map mashup like that? There must be sites out there for this geo-location type purpose? Dont have to give exact address obviously, just zip codes.

Could get gross updating it, but it's pretty straight forward to do.

last week, a new member named rfunduk PM'ed me and offered to build a google mashup map where GH members could enter their zip codes (or etc, voluntarily) and view the locations of the nearest members on google maps.  Possibly adding to it ability to list boards you have or those you want to borrow/see.

I havent heard back from him tho, I'll pm him. It sounded pretty good on paper.

re: updating it, he was going to limit how many members would be visible based on "miles from your location", I guess sort of like how flikr geo location maps do.

woebtz, would you be able to put together something like this?

It sucks.  We have tried to do this several times, but not much has ever come of it.  I have reached out to a few members here, but it's hard to get together when you have RL to deal with.  GH is nice, because we can squeeze it in to the little gaps of free time in our day (or the big gap called "work" in my day).

Crank up the privacy settings, don't provide photos, give an obviously fake name. I don't agree with the ToS so I don't give them anything I'm too concerned about.

I slapped together a "geekhack proximity locator". It isn't linked up to Google Maps but it will let you enter your zip code or latitude/longitude and look up and list geekhack members that are within a given radius to a zip code or set of coordinates.

Instructions are here:

PM me if you run into any problems or have any questions or suggestions.

One problem with it is that it's a little too US-centric, unless you use coordinates.

Of course, this would be a good use for grid squares - less space, and you can use as much precision as you'd like. Maybe have a prefix for a grid square, that it can pick up on, or have it parse a grid square as anything XXNNxx?

(I'm in EN80sb, FWIW.)

I threw this together in a couple of hours using code that I already had from another project. I only had geocoded centroids for US postal codes handy so I figured using lat/lon coordinates would be the simplest solution for non-US users.

Yeah, I'm converting to upper case before I do the conversion to lat/lon.

That's not the problem, though. I was checking for A-R in the fifth and sixth positions instead of A-X. Try it now.

once the UI is somewhat stable, the "member locater" should be sticky and also put into the wiki.  Every couple of months someone comes up with the idea of geekhack meetups and how to organize them. Well, here's the answer! Great job pfink (and honorable mention to rfunduk who also came up with a competing mashup, btw).  I asked pfink and rfunduk to work together if they wanted since the site only needs one version, I dont know if they did that, but I get the feeling pfink's version is more ready for public use though.

We're using incompatible development tools so we probably won't be able to combine efforts unless we rework some components into web services that can be called by either.

Anyway, once they're both done we can have a vote on which one to go with or which features from each should be incorporated into a combined effort.

Adelaide is a city of 1 million so im alone here, and australia should have 3 (20 million population).

I must say, Five Guys makes some pretty damn good fries. (And even a regular order is HUGE.) And you can get them with cajun seasoning on them, too.

(Not to mention, they make damn good burgers, too. Unless you've got a huge appetite, though, get the LITTLE burger, that's STILL two patties.)

If you get the regular burger, you probably won't need fries (or onion rings.) :)

What I usually do is get a little burger, and a regular order of fries. I eat the fries that are in the cupful, and the burger, then I leave, and eat the rest of the fries on the way home.

Frikandel Speciaal

Do you eat that with your hands?   Or do you simply tilt the tray and slide them suckers down??

A tiny plastic knife/fork. You cut them in pieces with one side of the fork or they come pre-cut in those quality establishments.

Do you have In and Out Burgers there??   If so, have you ever had an Animal 4x4??   Just awesome.   Bobby Flay's Burger Palace is great too.

Too bad you don't like fries......definitely the highlight of Five Guys.

No, we just got Carl's Jr., in fact.  I'm not a big fast food guy, but Carl's has some decent burgers and their onion rings are fantastic as far as fast food goes.  My favorite place around here is the Longhorn Cafe. They're local, though, so I have to find other places when I'm out of town.

Do you have Houston's out there??   They have an incredible Hickory burger.  Large patty cooked as you wish, with a thick slab of Canadian bacon topped off with fresh diced onions, a cup of cheddar cheese and some delish bbq sauce.  Just an awesome gut busting delight.   Oh.......and some of the BEST fries around.

I'm assuming Houston's originated from Texas??

Carl's Jr blows  :)

No, we don't have Houston's here.  In San Antonio, we really don't have that many great restaurants.  We're a tourist town more than anything, so we have a lot of the standard chains even as far as Mexican food goes, surprisingly enough.  Austin and Houston have much better restaurants, but even they can't touch places like Chicago and NY.  Texas is a very "country" state, and if it isn't chicken fried steak, sausage, or ham sandwiches, they don't want it.  It sucks for immigrants like me (Austin is a pretty good refuge, though).

It's not that bad. It needs this link (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=http:%2F%2Fwww.soybomb.com%2Fgeekhack%2Fgeekhack.kml&ie=UTF8&ll=42.55308,-103.359375&spn=161.408767,92.109375&z=1) on that page.

After I posted that link I added a Google map to the search results. You can just zoom out on the results map to get the world view.

I never tried the search results. Grid location should protect your privacy. My street view is miles away.

Use this URL to search:

Yeah, if anybody's concerned about actually being located by using this thing just use a set of lat/lon coordinates 20-30 miles away from you or something. We're only going for proximity here to facilitate possible meet-ups, not pin-point accuracy.
