Title: Filco Majestouch 2 in 2018
Post by: Sup on Tue, 24 April 2018, 03:57:33
Anyone still thinks it's one of the best stock TKL keyboard? I know it lacks in innovation like detachable cable Function keys etc ABS keycaps :-S. But Build quality wise does it still manage to compete in 2018 with other TKL Keyboards? :). Why am i asking because i am curios and also wondering what you guys think.

Leopold is better out of the box these days IMHO, but Filco MJ still has modding potential (if you don't want to assemble a custom keyboard in the first place).

Filco recently made Bluetooth variants of their Majestouch 2 keyboard, in both full size and tenkeyless versions which feature detachable cables.

Before 100% Veggies, Tp4 felt 65, 1 foot in the grave..

After 100% Veggies, Tp4 feels 43, wrapped in a warm blanket all day long..

For me: keycap ADD mostly, the inserts and having to cup up plastig bags for fit.... But also the lube never stays where i put it... end up with a greasy plate...

I guess i just like the rigidity/mechanical ness of cherry

You can still get Filcos/Diatecs for cheap in Japan. If you aren't looking to buy brand new and want something good quality, that's a good place to start.

Still using my MJ2's in my keyboard rotation.
I do wish they would change just one thing, and that would be to start using Cherry stabilizers.

I miss my metallic pink Filco TKL sometimes.  I've owned and modded a total of 5 Filcos over time, including painting a Camo Filco case metallic copper--they are ridiculously solid boards, but a major pain to desolder (which I've done more than once to swap switches and to a custom plate), with their thick switch hole inserts and through-hole solder.  If Filcos were factory-made with Kailh BOX (for some added water resistance), they'd probably survive almost anything.  I've looked at KOBO cases for Filcos too a few times, like the teal lacquer, considering getting one with MX Blues...  https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/filco/kobo.php?frame_id=2

Definitely a big soft spot for Filco still.

Yeah i can imagine them being cheap in Japon i have bought some great boards for cheap from there. But at the moment i am avoiding buying from japan since the proxies suck ass. Won a Realforce 106 it's 1.4 kg and they claim the package being 3+Kg i don't believe there is 1.6kg worth of packaging even made them recheck it but nah bruh still 3kg. ain't paying 70 Euros shipping and import costs on top. so i wasted 50 Euros rip lesson learned.

Haha, unless I am proxying for someone and they request the extra packaging, I can usually get packages to the US quite a bit cheaper than that.  :))

Edit: I just took a look, I was able to get a 1.4KG Sharp X68000 to the US via EMS for just 3600¥ which is a bit less than $36.

How much would it cost to proxy something with similar weight?

edit also ****ed up editing this comment x9.

Filco MJ2 is still one of the top options. The Leopold 750R PD is arguably better, since it has doubleshot keycaps, and the KUL ES-87 (if you can find one) beats both of them in terms of build quality, but it also has pad printed keycaps. The Ducky Shine is still the best choice if you want LEDs.

Yeah I was thinking as well the Leopold 750R PD seems like a better option with what you get for the money. But from what i heard is that replacing the space bar is hard since it isn't standard size of some sort  correct me if i am wrong. I will have to take look at the KUL ES-87.

I'm about 80% sure that's not an issue on the 750.

Can confirm 100%.  My two Leopold FC750Rs purchased last year have standard size space bars.

So i got the Filco first thing when i had it in my hand it felt super premium. But the switches are a bit scratchy i got the mx black and i wanted to play some MMO and not get finger fatigued so i changed the part of the keyboard to Yellow gateron cherry switches lubed i guess? It feels incredible smooth and the sound the keyboard now makes is super satisfying. Desoldering the Filco is a pain in the ass they use led free solder making it much harder to desolder the switches and more risk of damaging the pads. Also lubed the stabs with thicc krytox lube now they are even smoother and super silent. I would say it's worth buying one of these i don't know how good the Leopold and the KUL is compared to the Filco but it feels like it's worth the money. I got this keyboard for brand new 100 Euro shipped from /MM. Money well spend.

PS don't mind the table i am going to replace it  :)).

PREMIUM LIFE

I have the black one, its great - no complaints. Its a big wedge of metal.

You could also look into the TEX brand cases, but i wasn't into the screw in feet type deal...

BUT ALSO... PLASTIC IS NICE - so enjoy your new toy regardless

I wish someone would make a nice aluminum case for us full-size Filco users.  :(  It's a nice keyboard, and I currently use a Majestouch 2 at home (spray painted silver to match my Mac) and an original Majestouch at work, but a real aluminum case would be very nice!

Look for the older Phantom cases. They still pop up in the classifieds every so often

Personally, If want LEDs I prefer buying the IKBC MF-serie or Mistel MD870

I know you said full-size keyboard, but for the Filco TKL, alu cases can be easily purchased here (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/High-Quality-Anodized-Aluminum-Case-Shell-For-Filco-87-Tenkeyless-Mechanical-Keyboard-Including-Key-line-separation/32617566709.html), which gives Filco a leg up compared to Leopold:
