Indeed, it's a Silicon Graphics Octane.

Cheers

The machine on the left doesn't look like any SGI machine I know...

That Octane alone is worth much much more, if you can re-sell it and provided it's functional ;)

I wouldn't dump the other machines without harvesting the components first. At least one box looks like a server case. If you can buy this cheap and have enough storage room, you could make some additional cash in time.

The one in the back left looks like an SGI 540 - one of their Xeon machines. Nowhere near as interesting as the Octane

If you are talking about the taller on eon the left, I can tell you it is a Dell case. Not seen one used on a server, but who knows. They are a pig to work on that much I remember very clearly.

that's a 320 not a 540, the 540 is much taller. (2 P3s vs 4 Xeons)

That octane is the original one (under 300MHz) and who knows if it works, I wouldn't buy it because it's probably a piece of **** although if it's just $10 and you are picking it up you might as well.  VWs use ARCS so you can't use normal windows discs on them if I remember.  They are interesting but kind of a pain because of that, they also use weird memory sticks.

The visual workstations (320s and 540s) are pretty much useless. Just avoiding them is best.

As for the Octane, they're a pretty decent machine, the big brother of the O2. They don't take too much effort to get running either, really, esp. compared to VWs. I've been known to have given a couple away, and those have been in better condition than that one looks to be in.

A friend of mine used to work at SGI in a building now owned by Google. I dropped in on him at work once and got to oogle at all the killer looking machines they had. They sure made some good looking boxes.
