Post by: goodman247 on Tue, 29 May 2018, 00:52:43
Hi guys, what is your favorite donut place and which one is your favorite? Let's discuss!!

Coming from Chicago, my favorite is Stan's Donut (http://www.stansdonutschicago.com/) and their Blueberry old Fashioned is my favorite. All of their donuts are just so good!!

I would love to hear about what you guys like!!

It's weird, one could eat a box of donuts, and not feel full.

Yet, eat at most 2 and a half bagels, before heavy breathing ensues..

When I used to live in Kentucky, I really liked Pastry Plus in Louisville and Burke's Bakery in Danville. If I had to choose a favorite, it'd probably be a classic such as a chocolate or strawberry with cream filling. For more curious flavors, I really like rocky road and similar. Fortunately for my health, I don't often eat doughnuts anymore though and I don't even know of any good places in Boston since I haven't looked.

I think it has to do with how dense a bagel is compare to a donut, plus most of the time you have some sort of cream cheese with it, so that's why it feels more filling, but a good bagel with a good cup of coffee is always good, but it's no donut though haha.

You must me the yin to my yang, because I was going to say long johns but ONLY with custard, no cream.

There is a local place here called Marge's Donut Den and their long johns, apple fritters, old fashioned chocolate, and red velvet donuts are incredible.  Honestly, I think the biggest regret I have from moving from my old house to my new house is that I'm 20 minutes further away from Marge's now  :'(

I'm pretty plain, but I think it's because simple is the best.

Powdered donut stuffed with Jelly, simple and clean.

I might be mixing up what I think is bavarian cream... I always thought the more yellow custard'y filling was bavarian (or boston?) while the white filling (yuck) was some sort of frosting.  We are probably on the same page though ;)

Fargo checking in. Sandy's donuts for me. In terms of flavor it has to be old fashioned cinnamon and sugar or anything with peanut butter flavor.

I think you're right!  The cream we get here is much more like a white frosting, but they just call the yellow one custard instead of Bavarian cream.  We're practically brothers now!

Growing up, Krispy Kreme was like the best **** ever, but now that I have a taste of fancy ones from all the different shops around the US, Krispy Kreme feels overprice and pretty meh....

Sometimes you just can't beat the original, to me a simple glazed done right with a cup of coffee is close to what heaven feels like.

After having an actually good fresh donuts as a kid it's ruined me for life as I still try to chase that same melt-in-your-mouth warm pillow of sugar. It's ruined me to the point regular donuts have tasted cold and stale my whole life since. Basically they are all the same, no matter where you go donuts taste the exact same unless they are fresh.

Agree w/ tp - Bagels are superior.

For "fast food" doughnuts, I find Krispy Kreme better than Dunkin' Donuts, but DD has way better coffee and other snacks (like bagels, apple fritters, etc.).

I think Krispy Kreme is vastly superior when it's fresh off the conveyor, but dunkin' edges it out if you average it out over time.

Hard to rank one above the other, assuming equivalent freshness.

Nah Krispy Kreme is definitely better when fresh, but DD has way better coffee.

All I can say is Tim Horton’s have absolutely terrible donuts, they microwave them ffs.

As for varieties of donuts I enjoy....sour cream glazed/crueller/fritters are probably my favourite. Sometimes I need a paczi though, hard to find good ones.

I remember making donuts in a deep fryer from a recipe possibly out of “the joy of cooking”. So good fresh.

I wouldn't get any. If your cream is crispy, it is beyond stale.

krispykreme is only descriptor of the "glaze" on the outside,   Their kreme filled variants are still soft on the inside.

Doughnuts are fried so they naturally have a bit of crunch when fresh. As they age, they lose the flakiness and eventually just become hard and chewy once stale.

Yes, this is important. There is a thin window in which the dough has this perfect shell of taughtness that is gone within like two hours of making.

I've had it from its official newyork shop..

It's really really greasy..

As greasy as pizza,  but with pizza the sour tomato sauce helps you get it down..

Whereas the Cronut is just this warm sugary grease..

I think regular croissants and donuts are better.

For fast food donuts, probably KK's glazed blueberry cake.  Only slightly better than DD's.  If you're okay with em being slightly more dense than usual, there's this place in Orlando called Valkyrie Donuts that does vegan ones.  They're all damn good but I don't know what goes into em that makes em dense.
