Title: Filco keycaps and... a good choice?
Post by: Holdir on Sun, 18 April 2010, 06:47:28
Hi all,

After some days reading and reading about wich mechanical keyboard is better (i was looking about filco and das overall) i have decided to buy a "Majestouch Tactile Click Otaku NKRO (http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=filco_keyboards,majestouch_104key&pid=fkbn104mcnpek_special)". It's a good choice?

But i really write this topic to ask if i can buy some custom keycaps to filco keyboards. One of the keycaps that i want is this (http://geekhack.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=5746&d=1258415279).

Very much thanks and sorry my english :P

The keyboard in that pic is a Filco, so if you can find a place to get those keycaps, they will fit.

There seem to be a lot of modded Cherry keycaps that will fit on a Filco, so it's definitely a sound choice.

And what do you think about to choose a Filco instead a Das?

The Das acquired a bad name for itself because of a version released two years ago which they sold until quite recently which had some terrible electronics issues. It has since gone through two different revisions and the electronics problems appear to have been fixed. Another common concern was that the keycaps on the lettered version were prone to wear. They have since been replaced with keycaps that are probably more durable than the ones used on the Filco. Either way, given that you're using the blank version, this isn't really an issue.

What it comes down to here is taste. The Das has some features that the Filco lacks. They have a media key functionality built in which some like and some dislike. They also an integrated USB hub, however, the hub requires a separate USB cable which somewhat mitigates it's usefulness. Aside from that, it's an issue of aesthetics - you might like the shiny look of the Das, others will prefer the minimalist matte look of the Filco.

Remember at the end of the day that both of these keyboards come out of the same factory, and now that Das fixed the electronics issues that they have, they are quite similar.

My "panic"s are cherry compatible. Not sure about the "don't panic"s.

They do work with Cherrys, not Fukkas or Fokkers, seen here with the stabilizing mechanism from a Filco. They're spaced too close together to fit the Filco and the key would protrude significantly:

Ah, I've seen one of those too-close spacing 3-bangers recently. I think it was a MY-nnnn board I harvested for double shots.

It's actually a better fit for the backspace key, but the two side receptacles are so close together as to prevent the middle receptacle from engaging with the cherry stem even without the stabilizer assembly. The space between them is narrower than the switch housing.

Still, just a little dremel work away from using it as backspace without a stabilizer.
