Title: topre 45g alternatives
Post by: ju6ju8Oo on Fri, 22 June 2018, 03:40:30
I know there aren't exact matches but I am looking for a cherry mx compatible switch that weighs and feels similar to topre 45g.

How do you compare mx clear, Ergo clear, box brown, box royal, zealios or other switches to topre 45g?
And topre 45g feels heavier than a cherry brown, what spring should I use when I mod a switch?

If you want the feel of topre get topre.

The reason is, I want to build another dactyl. But I don't think i can use topre switches easily.
So, I plan to build a dactyl with a topre-like mx compatible switch.

I think matias quiet click is similar to topre 45g but that's alps, as for cherry zealios 67g "might be similar" maybe some silencing clips can help simulating that rubber feel?

I feel that cherry mx brown feels a lot lighter than topre 45g.
Some redditors recommends Box brown.

Another GH thread said 45g topre is actually with 55g actuation force.
Matias Quiet-Click Switch comes with 60g actuation force. In therms of weight, does it feel heavier than topre 45g or just about the same?

In my experience the closest MX switch I've found to Topre are Halo stems in black Cherry housings with 67g springs.

If i go with modding cherry mx clears, should I start with 67g as well?

I haven't done too much with clears myself, but you're essentially creating an ergo-clear by using a clear stem and 67g springs. A lot of people really like them. I just know that the Halo stems are touted for the rounded bump they have that starts right at the top, which is unlike any other stems I've tried, but more along the lines of what Topre does.

I'd highly recommend jumping on the Massdrop group buy for them now: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-halo-switch-pack (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/massdrop-halo-switch-pack) if you're able because they have historically been incredibly difficult to get a hold of and they have the most "Topre-like" qualities I've felt in an MX switch after modding the housing and spring. As long as you understand that only Topre feels like Topre, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Wouldn't it be the best to get the Halo Trues on massdrop and change the spring to 45gram?

I have found that Gateron blues with j-spacers (jailhouse blues) and 55g springs is about as close as you are going to get with an mx switch. It does have somewhat rounded tactility with a sharp collapse but it still just isn't Topre.

67g is bottom out weight, so it's a lower actuation point weight. Weighting felt pretty close to me.
