Slow load times does not mean the site is being DDOSed. It could be anything.

A few sites that I frequent and have knowledge of the back-end are being attacked today.

The new ethernet cables are made by Kailh.
Admins had some troubles inserting the plug because it was too big and it cracked the server ports.

GH's stability is utter garbage since MD bought it.

Moved to a PC under someone's desk at MD  ;D

(I've seen crazier things over the years - like a domain controller that was overheating, so it's case had been removed and it was hanging half-way out the window on the 2nd floor to catch that nice cool winter air.)

In Johannesburg where it would have been stolen in 5 seconds flat if it were on the first floor.  Second floor was the safer option  :p

Honestly my money is someone in the community is pissed off that MD bought geekhack and is attacking it using a simple DDOS attack. There not really that complicated. The way some people in the community act when they don't like something. I think its completely with in the realm of possibility. It could also be one of these other shady sights that popped up recently trying to replace Geekhack. I seen several and lets be honest sure there dreams of keyboard domination have pretty much failed. Cause majority of people seem to have stuck to geekhack and reddit.

When an attack can cost as little as $20 I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often. It just seems so silly to not have some decent DDOS protection (e.g. CloudFlare--never used it, just an example).

It's most likely NOT a DDOS.

Based on what Imav said, GH was being hosted on a managed dedicated server. As of now GH shares it's IP (not it's server) with at least two other websites so unless Imav was hosting these on his server, it means GH is now on a shared host.

Odds are when GH was sold they moved it to new hosting and they probably went with a  budget option, because if you don't understand how forums work, any cheap hosting will do. Forums do not need a lot of ram, drive space or even bandwidth, in fact, you would be surprised at how little GH needs to run and these are how hosting plans are marketed. Unfortunately forums do need HEAVY database access and that requires cpu cycles and drive IO, something your average web page doesn't require. Put a site like GH on a budget host like this and you get exactly what we are seeing.

Don't worry, the host will take care of it soon, it makes them look bad when hundreds of sites are being flooded out by one. GH's new overlords will be forced to upgrade their hosting plan VERY quickly and they will soon see why Imav was paying what he was for hosting. This was why he was concerned about who took over the site, buying it is one thing, paying the monthly hosting fees are another.

They haven't moved it yet.  It's in the works, but nothing has been done.  All of the problems are related to the legacy infrastructure.

If a managed server is running that poorly, they need to be throwing fits at whoever is managing it because that is a serious fail.
