Title: Anyone xperience with glass cutting ?
Post by: tp4tissue on Sat, 28 July 2018, 17:41:30
Update:

welp

Just cut off a large chunk of cells off finger

Tp4 wpm reduced significantly

Would describe the weight reduction piece, but it's rather graphic

thickness approximately 2.5mm,  So pretty darn deep.

Just didn't Respect the Glass,  Lesson Learned..

Tp4 had gloves on,  but took it off for a mere moment to clean something off the glass before silicone gluing.

As were cleaning in circular motion,  Clean cut,  Glass really goes through flesh like nothing I've ever experienced.

I can understand why obsidian had been used for primitive cutting tools, massively sharp

Need to remove a 2.5 inch strip off 30 inch.

Do I need to use that tapping tool on the back of the glass cutter for 2.5 inch strip, or can I straight up break it in 1 go..

If you use oil and score the glass well enough you should be able to just snap it off in 1 go. Don't forget to tap along the score line first to create microcracks. Or use needle nose pliers and align them with the edge of the scoring and simply twist to make a clean cut.

Step one, figure out if it's tempered or not.
If tempered, stop now. It has to be ground with a diamond bit and cooled while grinding. Even experts will not guarantee it.

Step 2.
Score and tap.

Step 3.
Try to snap along score line, watch it veer off into the part you need, wrecking it.

Step 4.
Throw it in the trash and go have the local glass cutter cut one for you.

At least this is how it usually works for me.

After scoring, I would recommend positioning the scratch exactly on a good square edge of a table or counter, and use something like a piece of wood to apply equal pressure along the length, such as a 2x4 edge upright, and try to give a firm sharp push so that it feels equal pressure down the length at once.

I've cut a number of pains to repair the windows in my house. I was reglazing them and accidentally broke a few panes =/

Pretty much what fohat.digs said.

1) Score it once, really well. I always use a straight edge for this and apply a good amount of pressure. Scoring more than once is fine but it will still the glass cutter
2) place the score line over a hard edge. I usually use a straightened out wire hanger.
3) tap long the score line with the back of the glass cutter. Gently
4) use a straightedge or piece of wood when you snap it to apply pressure evenly. Do this quick and firm to *try* to get a clean break.
5) if it breaks unevenly, but didn't damage the part you need, use pliers to break off the extra bits
6) sand the edge of the glass to make sure it's smooth. I recommend wrapping sandpaper around a block of wood.

Good luck

man glass_cutting

I've never had a 'need' to cut anything beyond a beer bottle. Me thinks if I had the need I would take it into a shop of some kind. Get well soon tp4
