Title: Model F? worth the purchase?
Post by: MC Qwerty on Sat, 01 September 2018, 08:53:14
Hello,
I was wondering if Model F owners would comment on their thoughts of their board and weather its worth it compared to the model m and how much they would be willing to spend on a reasonable board?,oh and is it would you say you rather get the model f or a hhkb pro 2/realforce?

Thanks,
Qwerty

Depends on how much money you have and how much you're willing to spend on a keyboard. But man, they feel good :D .

Oh my god Chyrosran I was literarily watching your video, :thumb:
Fantastic btw, anyway would you think £150-200 would be reasonable for a relatively minttish sought of one with box,
plus shipping and import taxs :( btw mate do you sell/trade any of your boards?
and how good I have a unicomp (yes I own scrub lord buckling but I love it) I was thinking about punching a model m but
I noticed that the model f was only a little more expensive.

Also mate have you thought of doing a review on the white fox with hako true 95g switches (I know how much you love heavy switches XD)
I can supply my one ha ah

Noice! :) I might be doing something Doom-related in the future actually, I have some plans ;)  (but not a time-frame xD).

As for the F; it really depends on what model it is, and how much you have and are willing to spend. For an F XT it's pretty steep, for example, while for an Unsaver, it's about 10% of market value :p .

I got a serviceable, but dirty (cleaned up nice) F XT for $100 shipped. I got the soarer's converter for another $39 because I explicitly wanted the XT model.

Man it's kinda hard to go back to anything else besides a really good Model M once this is hooked up to a modern computer. I suppose I could have gotten a better deal but where I live, the recycling center hasn't seen a mechanical ever (recycling wasn't exactly a thing here until recently)...they knew what I was talking about.

Definitely. There really is no point using any other switch once you've tried capacitive buckling springs. It's an extremely lively typing experience, and makes even the Model M feel dead in comparison. They're really easy to refurbish without desoldering - you just need a flathead and some pliers, really. If there are any faulty parts, you can simply buy new ones from Orihalcon. Just don't do what I did with two XT Models F already... I opened mine up too many times, which messed up the key feel slightly. There needs to be a perfect level of compression between the two metal plates. You can really feel it if some areas are too loose. Fortunately, the XT is the most serviceable Model F, and is regarded as the best feeling model due to how tight the chassis is.

That's an interesting observation.  The only Model F that I have here is a XT keyboard that I got off eBay, which was almost fully functional (I had to replace one spring) and needed a bit of cleaning up, but I never opened the case.  The typing sound and feeling is…  good, definitely better than my Unicomp, but it's a bit harsh on both the ears and the fingertips.  I can't help wondering if that's in some part due to age and deteriorated foam inside?

By way of comparison, the custom keyboard that I recently put together using Kailh BOX Pale Blue switches is a better typing experience for me.

Model F, relatively speaking, is usually worth its asking price. Especially when compared to other quality vintage boards, the Model Fs ubiquity and durability means you can get a great experience out of something that's not only pretty common, but that's in a seemingly bad condition. Not only that, but they're pretty easy to clean.

Directly speaking, Capacitive buckling springs are fantastic switches.

If you can't stand the noise (I can't) then the floss mod is an excellent remedy. I do it on every Model F that I work on.

Floss mod on a Model M is almost useless.

What material are you using on yours?
