Kerning stands out like a splinter in a sore eye, but it's an original release so it's going to be a trademark ;)

Beautiful photography.

Hopefully, both my G80-1863 and my GH key come in today.  I am so pumped.  Now I just need to sell my HHKB, so I can go wNv and make 'em NV.

It's funny what one "decides" to be picky about, I wish it had been keyboards for me earlier. Some people mature late ;)

Looks like the manatee had a bit of an explosive reaction from his previous meal.

You've been trolled. It was clearly intentional irony. After all, geeks and hackers were bound to spot the kerning, right?

On that note, I think some of the letters in the geekhack logo at the top of the page don't quite line up vertically.

After taking a close look in person at a Realforce 87u, I now regret bringing up the kerning imperfection on the GH key. The keys outside the main area on the Realforce are true typographic disasters. There's no uniform size and baseline at all. I guess it's a good thing I can't really see the black on gray printing.

If it was a true Any Key, it would return a different scancode (randomly) every time.

You could do that with AutoHotkey I bet.
"Every Key" would be more powerful.

Now I know it's been photoshopped.

I don't see any dust or fingerprints!   Those nubbies are a bit kinky though.

I cleaned it VERY thoroughly.

(I only had to 'shop out three dust spots!)

Just out of curiousity, how many geekhackers would've been interested in this keycap for Alps switches?

I'd probably have bought a couple of sets since I have a few Alps compatible boards that I use from time to time: TP2, Filco Zero, ABS M1 and MiniTouchs (to replace the mystery key since the escape key is tiny).

At the same cost ($9.99 for two) I'd go for it.

Would perhaps prefer to see an implementation for buckling spring (M-style keycap?) but that's probably quite a bit less possible.

Mmm? I clipped the stem on one of my Cherry Geekhack keys and glued in a Model M stem.

Mine arrived today. Pics when I get a board to put them on. I had my eyes on 2 Green cherry boards on eBay UK, but was not paying that.

Cherry key stems are small enough to rest inside buckling spring tubes (which is how I took the picture below.) You could in theory make some adapters to allow intact Cherry keys to plug into a Model M.

P.S. No interest here in putting geekhack keys on my Alps boards.

ALPS are the WORST for keypulling.  Gotta YANK those suckers and then half the time the whole switch will come with it.

Nods, ya, ya. Anyone who decides on ALPS key replacement BEWARE.

Even as an experienced key puller, I damaged a key cap on a pristine Northgate while prepping it for sale. I was even using the recommended/bundled key tool!

There's really nothing good I can about Alps anymore other than that they are better than rubber domes.  That's about it.

We used to have a lot of Alps fans here.  Seems most of them either converted or left.  (at least according to the poll (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?t=6626))

I'm a big blue and brown Cherry fan, but I'm not down on Alps.  They are a fun switch to type on (all the various iterations).  They definitely seem to show a lot of wear with age/use though.

Post by: itlnstln on Fri, 14 May 2010, 07:36:29
I think for a lot of the old timers here, we were just happy to find something that wasn't a rubber dome; I know I was.  As more and more keyboards became available with different switches, I think people started to see how mediocre ALPS are, especially the simplified versions.

I have a couple boards with white complicated Alps, both new and used, which feel great and are imo on par with Cherry blues.

All others feel terribly scratchy. I suspect Alps started greasing the stems for some reason, so that they collect excessive amounts of dirt. I'm planning to disassemble and carefully clean all switches on some scratchy board to verify my hypothesis. Some day. Another project for long winter nights...

It looks like sharpie or similar. It also looks like there are two different reds possibly? I would say he dyed them but not that many legends (outside of dual shot) take dye easily. The yellow halo around the legend also makes me think of a marker that was drawn around the legends. Sharpies (and some other markers) exhibit something similar to  bronzing/metameric shift properties against some textures, materials, and colors. Or perhaps the black key just absorbed a certain wave length and the red just looks more yellow as a result.
I would imagine it looks better in person, at least that's what it seemed like in some of my tests.

I also dig the M converted cap, nice! =)
