Title: [IC] Titanium Plate
Post by: peterpans01 on Mon, 05 November 2018, 22:07:15
Hello everyone.
We are the DGX team, a mechanical keyboard maker from Vietnam.
This is our latest product: Titanium GR2 Plate: https://imgur.com/a/P3vEzJA (https://imgur.com/a/P3vEzJA)
Some reasons why we choose titanium instead of other materials to make plate:
1) Is is more flexible than aluminium and brass
If you like the sound of brass plate, leave it as it is.
If you want the plate to be harder and the sound to be more bassy, you can heat-anodize it.
2) Color:
By using different voltages, a wide range of unique colors can be produced.
For example: We can make a Rainbow-colored logo like this:
You can choose any logo, max size is 20x20 (mm).
3) It is very strong and durable.
We would appreciate hearing your opinions on this.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

Update 1: Sound test video, switches are Ergo Clear
There are two sound test videos with DSA and SA keycap, you can watch it here:

Update 2:
Here are some photos of our samples:
These are Dolphin Linger plates, 2mm thickness.
Grey color is raw titanium, not processed.

More flexible than Alu and Brass? Didn't know it was softer material. I'd be interested.

Titanium isnt softer than aluminum. It def has a much higher young's/flexural modulus and tensile strength than aluminum. Not sure how it would compare to brass for sound since it is lighter than brass.

Price should be (not sure yet, could be lower) $60 for a 60% plate.
And about Titan case, in the future, we probably will.

From an acoustics perspective, a less dense material will produce a brighter sound

When the thickness is > 1.5mm, will you use notches to fit the 1.5mm switch gap ?

Of course they can, but you'll have to make the drawings. In fact, I'll do it, but for Realforce R2.

The thickness of our plates is from 1.5mm to 5mm.
We will ship from Asia. And shipping cost will depend on your location.

Can you make a 1.1mm thick plate? 1.1mm is ideal plate thickness for ALPS switches. I'd be interested.

no, moon uses jane v1/ce plate, not v2

v2 is closer to corsa/other 356 boards, whereas v1/ce is nearly a direct copy of the orion plate

jane v1 plate is used my mech27 (both ver.), mira, moon, and ofc jane

i think a few other boards too but that's just what i can think of off the top of my head

EDIT:

before people start kustom-policing me

this is the v2

this is the v1

The plate file for the Mech27v1 ( with compatibility described by Puddsy earlier ) is linked in the original v1 GB thread.  Hopefully the link still works, I can't try it from work...

https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=84703.msg2263216#msg2263216

I'd personally prefer a fixed plate rather than one that supports ISO as well as ANSI though

Would love to see it as dark as possible!

Well, you can always apply cerakote on it and get any color you want.

Are dark colors like black possible?
Sorry, black color isn't possible but grey is!
Neat! Any picture to showcase how this looks in effect? Maybe showing some different grey samples?

This is grey sample. It is darkest color we can make.

Can you anodize an entire plate with the rainbow effect, similar to the logo that you posted? If so, would it be possible to request several adjacent colors form the anodized titanium (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anodizing#Anodized_titanium) spectrum? (e.g. purple, blue, and turquoise)

Alright.

Does heat anodizing affect the color of the raw titanium? If so can you provide a before and after photo?
Really digging the raw titanium for a build or two.

Can you do any kind of finishes or do you plan on offering such?
Hairline finish, sandblasting or just a polish would do.

In the picture below, other than the logo were the plate treated or has it just been polished?

I have tried to highlight the lightest of the colors available in the spectrum.

Is this suitable for mimicking a white precious metal or would the polished raw titanium be more suitable?

About finishing plate, we will polish it.

In that picture, only logo was treated. The rest of the plate weren't treated, still raw.
