Title: Model M 1990s Model
Post by: Scarzy on Thu, 06 May 2010, 19:53:28
New here, and not sure if i'm meant to post past tense finds on here also - but i'd like to share just how fortunate I am with you all.

I've been checking Ebay regularly recently, mainly to check for 22" CRT monitors - and this popped up in the items i may be interested in.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280495674905

I noticed that bad, unbranded CRT - but I also noticed the IBM Keyboard - which looked strangely like a Model M to me. I had only educated myself properly on mechanical keyboards a week or so previously, and did a little more picture research to attempt to figure out if it was actually a fabled Model M which I had heard so much about.

I ended up persuading the seller to just sell me the keyboard, with postage and packaging - for £15 (listing wanted pickup only). It came this Tuesday, and although missing a scroll lock and numpad del, it works like a charm. It looked hardly used, the seller had no idea what she had just parted with. Will be buying the keycaps when I get hold of some money, student life is hard. Keys were put in the dish washer today - and I now feel like im controlling a battleship. I am grateful for information i was able to find on here. But also hope i've not made people too jealous.

e: the date is 03-04-19, what does this mean for the creation date?

Im pretty sure it's 1999. I've seen a few Greenock-made Ms with that mistake... Either way, judging by the generation of the design, it was made between 1996 and 1999.

Technically model Ms aren't mechanical. They use the cheapo membranes.

Technically every rubber dome keyboard is mechanical because it has moving parts.

Technically they're all keyboards.
