Title: Do BOX Royals still turn clicky?
Post by: gamebynight on Sat, 24 November 2018, 11:15:33
Hi All,

I know this was an issue before and Mike was aware it was happening some time ago. Just wondering if anyone has heard about a fix coming out or if they still turn clicky over time. I'm thinking of picking some up but can't do the noise on this board and the inconsistency between keys would drive me nuts.

Thanks all!

How much time are we talking? I'm 5mo deep on my daily driver and have not noticed any major change in the sound signature yet

I'm not sure if anything has been done about it, but I think it's a slightly overblown issue. I've been using a keyboard with BOX Royals at work for about five months, and a few keys are affected by this, but I don't notice it unless I press each key individually specifically listening for it. In my experience, it just affects sound and not feel.

The fact that it's caused by lube that rubs off of the actuator nub (Idk what it's called) makes me think the only solution would be to make the switch tops open-able from the top like Cherry or ALPS.

Sorry for not actually answering your question.

Yes, it's still an issue. They have not implemented a solution to box tactile switches becoming clicky. The issue affected my switches quickly and I had no relube them once a month at the absolute latest and the initial sound and feel after lubing only lasted a few days. To me it's a huge difference. This is why I've switched to holy chickies which I think are better switches anyway (halo stem in cherry click (blue/green) housing, and I use springs that give it a similar weight to royals, two small internal o-rings like those used for box switches, and some light lube).

They turned somewhat clicky on me very quickly as well: in under a couple weeks. I've been using them for a couple months and I would not say that the clickiness is too loud. I can still use them working in the same room as my wife, without complaints from her. But the noise factor is indeed noticeable when compared to brand new Box Royals.
