Title: Media Sightings - Film, TV, etc
Post by: nowsharing on Sat, 08 May 2010, 21:14:59

Seen a Model M turn up in a great film, or a not so great film? Seen a celebrity playing with their Wang?

Post your proof in this thread.

I'll start off the fun with two of my own:

I spotted what looks like a 122-key terminal Model M, and perhaps a normal Model M in an episode of CBC's The Nature of Things: Masters of Space (http://www.cbc.ca/documentaries/natureofthings/2010/mastersofspace/). They are both apparently being used by the USAF's Space Program.

"fire!"

Neo apparently suffered from RSI, as his personal setup includes a very large ergonomic board of some kind, as well as something a little older:

The Matrix is full of otherwise plain looking rubber domes, pretty normal stuff. You'd think Neo would have been a HHKB type of character.

Mhm, I thought Garth was using a Model M but now that I look closely I see a L shaped enter.
Would that be a cheap clone?
Is this the Aurora version of Model M?

Bill Gates is typing on a Model F in one scene in Pirates of Silicon Valley. Don't remember which clip it is; it's where he's talking about keeping your friends close, but your enemies closer, in reference to IBM. Hmmmmmm...

That board in the bottom left of the picture is really odd the more I look at it. The space bar is a bit longer than usual. The arrow cluster is uncommon, and there seems to be an additional key in the top right. I thought it was an old Apple keyboard when I saw that.

As far as Neo and a hhkb I don't think he was much of a "happy" hacker =P

I keep forgeting to mention the keyboards I see on screen,  I guess I will put more effort into it now =)

Almost all of the keyboards in the James Bond film Goldeneye are Model Ms, at least the ones that are zoomed in on.

"Moon" Movie - Good Movie but The Future of Keyboards is bleak (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?t=8710&highlight=movie)
At least the keyboards in Moon have keys (I agree--a great film, if not the best of 2009). In Avatar, when they aren't waving their hands in the air Minority Report style, they're apparently tapping away on these apple-inspired glass torture devices:

Moon: 5/10 (one of the weaker Frankenstein clones in an outdated SF setting)
I would have thought that someone with your good taste would have appreciated Moon at least.

That's an Acorn computer... If it's anything like their BBC Micro, it's probably some boring linear mess.

Acorn A3000?

How about Dr. Who?

Cheap Brit Special Effects Department can't even afford a decent keyboard for the Tardis.

The latest Doctor does seem quite retarded.
And he uses an Apple chiclet keyboard.
Discuss.

There's a Symbolics LISP Machine (well, you see the console and keyboard) on Val Kimler's desk in his dorm room in Real Genius.  Trying to find a screenshot..

Acorn Archimedes 305 or 310 keyboard.

The A3000 (and A3020) had the keyboard in the machine's case.

Edit: My bad, I didn't look closely enough. That is a 3000.

I like her contours better, even if she has a lisp.

Couldn't find any pictures of the logo, but there's a quick shot sometime during the move, definitely a Dell quietkey or AT101.  Either way they replaced the sounds in the movie:

What kind of Doctor Who is that?

You all should watch the right and proper ones. I bet you can find them some place.

I was watching an old episode of Inspector Morse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inspector_Morse_%28TV_series%29) last week and spotted an IBM PC and a Model M in one of the offices at the police station.

not too rare. $25-125 range, varying on luck and condition. Black ones tend to go higher than white.
