Title: Programmers APL Keyset Model Ms
Post by: skcheng on Sun, 09 May 2010, 10:13:32
I bought one of these awesome boards from my favorite ebay keyboard dealer rarekeyboardstore.   Last two according to Brian:

88 APL Model M (http://cgi.ebay.com/Programers-1988-IBM-Model-M-Keyboard-1391401-Unit-574-/130389426298?cmd=ViewItem&pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item1e5bd0c07a)

91 APL Model M (http://cgi.ebay.com/Programers-1991-IBM-Model-M-Keyboard-1394540-Unit-572-/130389351724?cmd=ViewItem&pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item1e5bcf9d2c)

Just in case anyone didn't see my thread on Brian and rarekeyboardstore:

I remember when Brian first started selling those I had to email him to tell him what those symbols were. (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?p=95002&highlight=apl#post95002)

I pulled my keys off of a 1319401 (I won't mention how much less I paid because that would be rude).  And stuck em on my mini for some mix&match fun.

I suspect that the "provenance" of some of Brian's "refurbished" keyboards can be a bit suspect because he regularly swaps keys and assemblies around.  If he says "refurbished" it could be a mix and match special.    My "Bernie Madoff" special on the other hand has impeccable credentials.  Shearson Brothers was a Wall Street firm that was bought out.

I like your Bernie Madoff special.   It's one of my favorites.  If you ever sell it.....let me have a crack at it.   And eventually, I'll find one of these:

DisplayWrite Mini (http://www.clickykeyboards.com/index.cfm/fa/items.main/parentcat/9242/subcatid/0/id/120575)

I know many want "original" down to the last keycap, but I'm happy with fully refurbished and clean.   I would pay Brian just to clean one of my boards.  It takes me a LONG time to do it.

After getting two Filco Brown tenkeyless boards (one for work, one for home) I've decided my next purchase needs to be a buckling-spring Mini.. Now to find one...

SK, just giving you a hard time - you're gonna like those APL keyboards.  I'd say after all the mods and keyboards you've collected in such a short time you've reached Senior Geekhacker status which allows us to point out minor defects in any keyboard you post.

Webwit insults the broken foam and watermarks on my NIB keyboards and I point out his Kolorful KBDMania Koordinated Koolaid Kolor schemes.  CH123 will be along any minute to tell you the Model Number is wrong and ItlnStln will figure out SOMETHING.

P.S.  I just looked up how much I paid for mine mint condition (different seller).  Wow, did I get a GOOD DEAL! (that's for Kishy)  :biggrin1:

Hmmm......just like that I'm a Senior member  LOL.

Did you catch my pics of the newest additions to the family??  Or the subsequent digs Webwit shot at you??

Oh I'm over it, no worries. I know that someday I too will own a mini.

(wait, you couldn't have won that...the winner bidder was a relatively new ebayer...someone is messing with me here!)

Things are worth what people are willing to pay.   I'm happy with my board.   If others feel like they're worth $80, they won't last long on ebay.   If they don't. I'm sure the seller will need to adjust his pricing to accommodate what the market will bear.

One day you will shock us all, and not butt into a thread with negative derogatory comments about something that doesn't quite fit into your narrow little view of the world.

I wouldn't pay the prices going being asked for a Mini (And I like my numpad), but at no point would it even occur to me to go barging into a thread a start ripping (or trolling, take your pick) those who are happy to pay it.

This is not a cheap hobby for the most part. Just accept it, and if you get a bargain, bonus.

Definitely got to get me an APL board one of these days...

There are different ways to enjoy any hobby when it comes to collecting.   I have no problems with comments like "you got ripped off", or "you got a great deal.....just a steal" comments because it's relative to whatever financial involvement we happen to feel comfortable with.

Some here don't want to spend much money  (or can't) and yet can still enjoy the cheap bargain but still high quality find.   Others (Webby for ex) can afford to spend the sky for the true luxury items  (which really still aren't that expensive).   I enjoy both ends of the spectrum.   I think the $200+ that I've spent on a NIB Mini was money well spent and I also think the $15 for a near mint Model M from treigle was money well spent.

We should all feel comfortable with fellow Geekhackers expressing an opinion one way or the other.  That would the true spirit of forum brotherhood  :)

Now the true question is what is the current value of an Industrial Space Saving Mini?   I've asked around since I genuinely don't know.......and Rip won't say  LOL.

Meh. I paid $120 for Brian's first Industrial Space Saver, but it was a "loyal customer" price, and he's smart because I told him he should charge at least $200 or better auction them, and I posted about it on geekhack. The next 4 he sold for $200 in a very short amount of time. I knew he had one left, hidden away, which he later sold to me for a, ehm, special price of $320. I think auctioned they make much more than that. The first one was shipped to me "uncleaned" for speed, and they are pretty much NIB without the box. Current value: whatever the biggest lunatic pays for it on ebay.

Why not just buy a set of the APL caps from Unicomp?

Because (from a snob's point of view) the ink printing on Unicomp's APL legends are weak.  Also, there are different versions of the layouts of APL legends, and personally, I'm holding out for a geekomatic set like Ripster has, with the additional blue legends.

Poor Chuck.  Instead of working on that Unicomp Mini he's gonna be spending all his time over a dye sublimation machine.

BTW - the APL keys I have are the BOLDEST of all the IBM/Unicomp keys I own.

Chuck has someone else doing it.   And Unicomp is losing money with custom $10 key orders.  That's why the price is going up.   I think he mentioned .50 more/key LOL.   That'll show people.....

You know, it's funny when people get all riled up when they're notified that something's a rip-off. And what's even funnier is how they defend the outrageously high price and then bash the the guy who told him the product wasn't worth that much.

You see, I'm just notifying people that when Mr. Crappy-Customer-Support goes selling a used keyboard that's still made for the same price as a new one, it might not be the best deal on the planet.

I can't quarrel with such a keyboard being rare, and hence sought after.

And the price of an APL keyboard from Unicomp is higher yet, which negates the most obvious avenue of criticism.

They also made black and white models (it'd be cool to have a white one), however, I've only seen that computer on photos, I never seen one in person. Believe it or not it's a NetVista... but certainly not one of the common ones.

These are the most common NetVistas:
