Title: [IC] Captured Lightning Wrist Rests by Angry Nimbus (GB OPEN!)
Post by: jb1830 on Fri, 01 February 2019, 14:45:55

I'm working with a friend that runs a small woodcraft shop to offer these hand made custom wrist rests.

They are cut from hardwood and then burned using a high-voltage current to generate the fractal burns. These burns are then filled in with resin, cured and finished.

The price will be around $50 for 60%, 65% and TKL sizes with custom sizes possibly being an option for the group buy.

Right now the 2 base finishes are light or dark but we are also able to offer custom colors if there is enough interest.

Here's a link to the shop's website: https://angrynimbuswoodcraft.com/

and a video of the fractal burning:

UPDATE 2/2/19
Thanks everyone for the interest! I wanted to address some of the requests seen on the form. A lot of people asked about custom lengths and resin color options. We are currently looking into our ability to fulfill those requests and it is very likely that we'll be able to do both. Once that is confirmed in a future update we'll probably have a vote for top 3-5 colors. Stay tuned!

Been waiting for this for a long time, these are incredibly unique and extremely beautiful. I'll be buying three at the very least, potentially (a lot) more.

Thank you. We are very excited to be offering them!

Since this is a first run we might stick to some limited colors. The ones pictured I commissioned so they were my preference. Feel free to add custom colors requests here or in the notes section of the form!

Can we also have more wood options (e.g. EBONY)?

I would join for a couple in a heartbeat if two criteria could be met:

1) Different wood types, not wood color as currently used.
2) Blood-red resin color. It would make for a proper vein-y look :-)

Hi everyone thank you so much again for your interest and comments. We are taking a lot of your ideas into consideration and I wanted to give a quick update.

Resin Colors:
We will 100% be offering a variety of resin colors for the fill on the fractal burn. We are currently working on narrowing down the selection to 5-10 of the most popular colors. If there is a color you'd like to see make sure you leave a comment!

Wood Types:
A few of you have expressed interest in different types of wood. We are going to try to make this happen but it will ultimately come down on what we are able to source. Note that any exotic woods that we are able to offer will incur additional costs and be available in limited quantities.

Dimensions/sizing:
We have also had a lot of requests for custom sizing so we will be offering custom lengths. This means all rests will be approximately 3.5" wide and 3/4" tall with your choice of length from a list of presets or custom entry. These dimensions mimic other rests in the market and from personal testing can say that it's worked great across a variety of customs (Moon, TXCP, LZ GHV2, 1up TKL, Duck Viper). The only downside of this option is that depending on length additional fees may apply.

The last thing I wanted to talk about was finish. As some of you have noted the surface of the finished wrist rest is not perfectly flat and does have some relief. The main reason for this is it gives the piece more visual depth but also because sanding down to get a smooth surface removes a lot of the smaller details from the burn and we want to keep as much of that as possible. With that said the surface is sanded down so there are no hard edges. The deepest point on the grooves of either sample come in at 0.5mm which is damn near imperceptible to the wrist. I had my concerns at first too but I have been daily driving mine for 6 months with 0 issues and I have also had fellow members of the community try it out and agree that it is a non-issue.

I think at this point in time we will be ready to open the group buy in about 2 weeks with delivery happening about 2 months after that. We are still working on scheduling with other projects but we'll have it finalized for the launch of the GB.

I'll be posting more updates as soon as I have new information! Thanks again.

I second this. There can be made a case for limited run colours with a markup such as; silver and gold, however I am doubtful that would be worth the time and effort  :p

Hi all, another quick update and possibly the last before the GB launches.

We are finalizing the resin color options. Looks like we will be offering around 10 colors! So hopefully there's something for everyone.

As far as the wood options it looks like the rests will be made from pine with he option to choose the natural or dark stains as originally shown. We will also be offering Maple and Walnut in their natural color finish. We looked into getting some actual Ebony but it turns out that not only is it prohibitively expensive, it is an endangered species and even banned in some countries. We are looking into maybe offering a darker stain to fulfill the request for darker wood.

The majority of you have shown interest in 65% size rests with TKL and 60% in close 2nd and 3rd. Below is a list of the predetermined sizes we will be offering. You will also have the option to submit for a custom length if these don't work for you.

60% - 11.75" x 3.5" x 3/4"
65% - 12.5" x 3.5" x 3/4"
TKL - 14" x 3.5" x 3/4"
1800 - 15 ⅜” x 3.5” x 3/4"
Full Size - 17 ½” x 3.5” x 3/4"

At this time we are preparing for the group buy to happen on the Angry Nimbus Woodcraft website (https://angrynimbuswoodcraft.com/) to make things go as smooth as possible.

Thanks again to everyone for your interest. We are excited for the GB to go live soon!

Fantastic update!

RE: darker wood, I do think a darker stain might be a good idea - otherwise, maybe look into Wenge? There's some really dark strands of that, two of my rests are wenge and they look amazing. Guess it depends on availability for the strands though and it's also pretty expensive so maybe it wouldn't be worth it but I figure might as well suggest it.

They're not all glittery like the ones being tested but I believe they do all have a slight shimmer to them.

I'd much prefer a naturally dark wood instead of stained wood as well. (even if it means I may have to pay a bit more)

Resin with Shimmer seem like a good idea, just need one that really resemble a lighting strick color  :thumb:

Typically I don't use a wrist rest but these are making me re think that stance. I vote for green resin also. That affect on the prototype you showed is amazing how they mixed colors it looks like. I kinda wonder what a green and teal mix might look like.

Hi Everybody, this is Rob from Angry Nimbus.  I'm not too handy with computers, but I wanted to make an account so I could personally thank you all for your interest  I'm so excited to get started on building these.  I've been following along with your comments and I wanted to address some of the questions and ideas that were posed.  If you have any other questions, please post them as a reply and I will do my best to check this thread periodically to answer them.

Problem with pine is that it is too soft of a wood.. nails would even dent it easily  :-[

It is true that pine is a soft wood, and dents quite easily.  I am glad you brought this up.  From what jb1830 has told me, his pine wrist rest has held up to daily use with no issues.  All of these boards will be finished with UV resistant polyurethane which does add a layer of scratch protection.  That being said, I would prefer to make them from hardwood.  I am offering these wrist rests in Maple and Walnut.  Not only are these woods more durable (Maple being the hardest), but they are more attractive and create more intricate burn patterns due to the tight grain structure and density.  I know a lot of people were interested in darker colored woods, so I have added Ebonized Maple (black stain/dye) as an option.

Just got sent a test video of some of the resin colors. Figured you guys might want to take a look.

Very cool! Will they all be shiny/glittery like that or will there be some matte ones, too?

All of the colors I am offering are mica powder pigments, so they do have a luster/shimmer.  The glittery one in the video has actual glitter in it, which makes it stand out.  The rest of them have a sheen like the teal and red ones.  I am not offering any matte colors at this time.

EBONY/WENGE/DARKER WOODS

There was a lot of discussion about this and I wanted to assure you that it was not ignored.  I would love to offer these options, but a number of factors led to my decision to avoid them, at least for now.  Many species of Ebony/Wenge are critically endangered, or vulnerable due to over-logging and exploitation (let alone the absurd price).  In addition, some of these woods can be toxic to work with or sensitize you (create new allergies).  The process I use basically vaporizes the wood as it burns and I have some concerns about what chemical vapors I might create in the shop.  Additionally, I have never tested my home-built machine (The Lignen-Smelter 9000) on these woods, so I don't know how they will burn, if at all.   In summary, I didn't want to burn some endangered, possibly toxic wood and end up not being able to produce what I offered in the first place.  However, I am offering these wrist rests in Domestic Black Walnut, which is a gorgeous, naturally dark hardwood.  I have also expanded the black stain option for Maple wrist rests, in case you wanted black with the added durability of hardwood construction.

Let me know if there is anything I missed, and once again THANK YOU so much for the opportunity.  I really love making this stuff!

Hi,

I was really interested in this until I saw the shipping prices...
Thats for ONE wrist-rest shipped to Scandinavia.

WOW, that is just bonkers!  The shipping rates on my products are generated automatically by the e-commerce site so I don't have much control over that other than choosing the available carriers, but I will look into a more affordable shipping option.  That being said, I had someone in Canada order a bottle opener from me and the cheapest shipping option I found was still almost $30.  I haven't done too much international shipping, and I haven't shipped anything to Europe yet.  If you have any suggestions for carriers, I would love to hear them so I can improve my service.

Also, I just deleted the link in my post because I was informed it needed to be approved first.  I don't want to step on any toes here, and my forum etiquette is definitely rusty, so my appologies.  I will post the link in the appropriate thread once it is generated.

Well I don't know from your end but I recently shipped a TKL keyboard to Texas, tracked for $20 and that box weight 4.4lbs and was way larger than a wrist rest.
That was through the equivalent to USPS.

I'll message you directly to see if I can figure something out.

I'm looking into the shipping options that I can provide through the website.  Please bear with me while I figure it out. I might just have to ship myself over there for a visit and bring them in my suitcase.   :thumb:

Thank you for looking into it - as someone who also resides in Europe, anything lower than $30 ish per wrist rest (with a potential slight cut for 2nds or 3rds) seems reasonable; I have friends in the US proxy me stuff regularly and two of the latter packages I've received, through USPS priority, have been $63 for 8lb and $27 for a 4lb. Probably depends on shape and whatnot, but I'd assume one packaged rest should weigh around 3 to 4 lb? Maybe I'm lowballing it, either way even if shipping does come out high, I can ask for help within the US so I'm in for 2 regardless.

Great job and I appreciate your interest and willingness to get involved/make an account etc!

Thank you!  I am chatting with customer support on my website to figure this out, but so far we don't have anything solid.  None of these should be over 5lbs, and there should be more options available for international shipping according to my setup.  Can I ask if you are seeing USPS 1st class as an option?  Or UPS international?  It's also possible that they are incorrectly calculating customs/tariffs.  Sorry for any inconvenience.  I really want to get these out into the world!

I'm in no rush at all, I'd assume the same is true for other prospect customers over this side of the pond - I'm only seeing $65~ for a single rest thus far still when I checked a couple minutes ago, but as said I'm glad you're working on resolving it and I'm sure you'll have it figured out sooner or later!

Update:  I am currently working with Shopify to figure out why the cheaper options are not being displayed.  There should be an option for "USPS First Class Package International" which is a much better rate.  I did a test on the USPS site and it was estimated at $24 to Stockholm, which seems more reasonable.  I will get this figured out and report back to you.  If nothing else, I will offer a flat rate at checkout and get them shipped.  I apologize for the inconvenience, and thank you for your patience while I sort it out.

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING UPDATE

I am happy to announce that this bug should be fixed now.  There was a default weight set in the parameters of the website which has now been updated.  It may take a little time for the updates to hit my site, but cheaper options should now be available for all products.  If you are still seeing exorbitant rates, please message me directly or post here. These are all shipped from zip code 18938, and the packages weigh in around 2.5lbs.  The cheapest option should be 'USPS First Class Package International".  If you do not see this option, or the shipping still looks too high, you can check what your shipping should be using the calculator below.  Input your country at the top, 18938 as the zip code of origin and select "calculate price based on shape and size".  If there is a discrepancy, I will figure it out, but the shipping quotes should be accurate now.

WOW I am so blown away by the response from you all!

I had to pop in and announce that there are currently already 24 wrist rest orders in my que, so we are approaching the 30 unit mark for the first batch.  I did not expect such a fast response, but rest assured I am ready to get working on these ASAP.  As stated previously, I am not putting a limit on the total number of orders.  The first batch of 30 will be completed by April 11th.  The next batch will be delivered at a later date, which I will be better able to determine once I see the full work load.  Once again thank you so much for your orders!  I'll be heading to the lumber yard tomorrow to select some stock and get started milling.

Just out of curiosity, do you have any pictures of what the ebonized finish looks like? I'm thinking about the pine with that finish but I'm curious what it looks like.

The black wrist rest in the original post is black stained pine, which is one option.  I also have black stain (ebonized) as an option for Maple wrist rests.  I don't have any example pics right now, as I rarely use black dye in my work.  However I have posted a few examples in the Group Buy thread which you can find here:
