Title: Off to Hawaii
Post by: iMav on Fri, 14 May 2010, 22:30:16
Taking the family to Maui next week.  I'm not terribly excited, the wife and kids certainly are.  :)

it's the first time we've been.  Anyone have suggestions on thing we should not miss while there?

Lahaina is fun for island history, it's very family friendly, shows, period clothing and such. Volcano is a must. Don't know if you are interested in whale watching, but it's a good excuse to get on a boat for a half day. Most everything is decentralized to encourage visitors to travel around and not sit at resorts all day.

Do you plan to visit Kauai? There's an awesome massage spa in Anahola I'd recommend for anyone, young or old.

Scour the pawn shops and flea markets to see if there are any Model Ms or any good IBM stuff.

Don't do what my dad did when he took us to Hawaii. He saw an ad for some interesting stage variety show that included a buffet dinner. What he didn't realize was that it was a drag queen show. Ooops! The best part was that he didn't just pick for our family. We were on vacation with his friend's family too so he had to live down his accomplishment with his buddy and his kids too. ;)

We didn't realize it was a drag queen show either at first, but about 30 minutes in, I hear my mom whisper "are you sure those are women?"

If you're planning on taking the ride down to Hana, there's a pretty neat cave/lava tube that you can visit.  I thought it was pretty interesting.  It's pitch black down there, but the owner/operator provides flashlights.  The cave is about 1/4 mile long and it's paved with hand rails most of the way so its a pretty easy walk through.

If you want to try some Hawaiian food, I hear "Da Kitchen" is pretty popular.  I forgot to try there the last time I went to Maui, though I really don't expect it to be much different from the food here (I live on one of the other islands).

Have fun iMav.  There is nowhere like Hawaii.  I've been to 3 islands and Maui is my favorite by far.  Much of what makes Hawaii so great is the mindset, you really get to unplug and enjoy a mental vacation from the hustle when you go, if you let yourself enjoy it.

Spam Musubi tastes mo bettah in Hawaii.

I was with a System x Field Specialist just last week opening a blade just like that, to diagnose why it wasn't working and hopefully fix it, which we did.  Wasn't in Hawaii though,

Just got back home a few hours ago.  Have a Ducky and a NIB Model F waiting for me.  Haven't opened either box yet, but should get to it later today.

I have to say, I am a bit irritated with Brandon (clickykeyboards) at the moment.  I'll preface this by saying i often get irritated by minor details while letting larger issues slide.  That's just me.

Anyways, I purchased a NIB Model F from Brandon for $450.  I told him that I'd take it for that price (after unsuccessfully trying to barter a bit) if he'd throw in a PS/2 <> AT adapter.  I get home today and fine out that he did not include the adapter.

(perhaps I'm just upset that I can't use the keyboard right now without making a trip into town)

Adapter issues aside, what do you think of it?

Alas, the foam was irrevocably crumpled in the process.

I thought it was a joke when you said you paid clickykeyboard's rent for a while. that sarcasm symbol needs to start getting passed around.

I didn't pay that much.  Brandon likes me.

I'm ok with the price...and I have every intention of rendering it no longer NIB.
