Title: What keyboard switches do you love/like?
Post by: Sintpinty on Tue, 19 February 2019, 10:14:39
I'm just wondering what keyboard switches everybody likes here.

Personally my favorite are linear switches that are light, because there is a lack of tactility allowing me to go faster and more comfortable typing, while at the same time being light so i won't get too fatigued .
What's your favorite switch?

Outemu blues are my favorite, though I just made some franken blues for a Laplace,BSUN blue stems and springs in Cherry MX black housings, not as tactile as the Outemus, but a little smoother on the downstroke,I'm liking them for their difference in feel.

I have tried just a few switches, so I have not much experience. From the MX catalog, I like their linear switches, specially their retooled MX blacks, which are really smooth and not very light, which is good in my opinion because reds are too sensitive and lead to typos and involuntary key presses. Linears are a good, simple and effective design. Some say they are boring, but I don't agree. With good thick pbt keycaps they sound great too. I have also tried MX browns, which are too light and with an imperceptible and useless tactility. Blues may be attractive to novice users, but you soon find out that their sound is just not right, and compared to other clicky switches, they feel a bit like a toy. When I mean other switches, I was thinking of buckling springs, which I have enjoyed many years in my old IBM Model M. They are excellent in the way they feel and sound, and very efficient for typing (not so for gaming). However, in both the typing feel and sound I see them a bit old-fashioned for a modern keyboard. Finally, the switch I'm now enjoying the most is Topre. It feels very tactile, very smooth, with a quiet and pleasant sound and the overall experience is just addictive.

Best site ever, with force displacement for most switches in existence:

Alps, however they are not easy to get in a good form factor and nice ones can be expensive.
Wired Jailhouse Blues, unfortunately they are complicated to make properly. The J-spaced and o-ring variants are not quite as good, but still nice.
Buckling Springs, but they are too loud and stiff.
Kaihl Gold switches, which feel like wired Jailhouse Blues, but like buckling springs are too loud

So far nothing ticks all of the boxes.

I have only tried 3 switches. So honestly I'm curious on everyone's opinion as well. I have tried Cherry Blue, Red, Brown. Browns were OK I guess, but it was my friend's keyboard and I didn't get to use it much. I had a keyboard with Blues for a moment, and I liked them. The Cherry Blue was easy to press, loud and clicky on my aluminum board. (Corsair K70 Blue, I know store bought, I'm a noob) Right now I have Cherry Red's in my K70 Red.  I love the crap out of reds. I don't even feel myself pressing the keys half the time I just hear the clack as it bottoms out and my fingers move along as needed.

That being said, anyone else reading this... I'm building my first board. I cannot decide on Gateron, Cherry, Kailh. They seem to be the three best choices. I'm going to be playing a few games that don't really require all that much keyboard, mostly mouse. And typing. I was thinking of trying Blue's again because I miss my clicky. At least I think I do. But I cannot decide a brand. I bought a Hotswappable PCB as I'm a noob. Wacha all think? What would you choose/suggest?

Clicky: Capacitive Buckling Spring, SKCM Blue Alps

Tactile: 45g Topre (specifically HHKB Pro 1 domes with purple Realforce sliders, probably my favorite typing experience hands down), Ergo Clears, Vintage Browns (there's still a lot I haven't tried in terms of MX tactiles, but generally something that's decently smooth, has a small to moderate bump, and is fairly light weight), SKCM Orange Alps

Linear: As long as its sufficiently smooth and the right weight, good linears are a dime a dozen in my opinion.  I usually prefer Cherry for their sound, but the new Gateron's with the milky tops and black bottoms are nice as well.  I also have some Novelkeys Creams I need to try out.

I really value variety as far as my collection goes, its nice to switch things up  :thumb:

Linears: Gateron Reds from my experience. Cherry MX Red is okay, but a bit scratchy for me.

Tactile: Topre 45g (HHKB) + Topre 55g (Realforce)

I've also used Kailh Blues for clicky switches in the past, and thought they were alright.

I do design and video work, which doesn't require a lot of typing, but rather just pressing keys and moderate typing, so I like heavier, smooth/silent tactile switches best. Currently my favorite is Zealios 78g, but Aliaz is very close to being a favorite. Got some clears and linear switches coming in, which I'll modify to holy pandas with krytox 204/205. In general for gaming and typing I also prefer linears, but it's something I need to explore more,
Got some Linjär coming in too, which I'm excited to try!
