Title: Are requests welcome? Scrollwheels under spacebar
Post by: freespam on Mon, 04 March 2019, 23:18:17
I'm not aware of any keyboards with horizontally mounted scrollwheels under the spacebar so I thought this might be a good place to make the request and see if there's any interest.  If the front of the keyboard was longer like a M65A, would there be enough room?  One could line up with C or V and another under N or M.  I think they'd be convenient for media controls or maybe arrows or zoom.

Ima here to check your interest. Consider your interest checked.

Could you show us what this looks like in paint?

Also, macro keys can achieve this, why would you want scroll wheels? Otherwise, there's a rotary encoder keyboard IC (Satisfaction 75) that's going on, might be what you're after.

And finally, you would have a mouse that already scrolls? Seems very strange to want this.

Have a look at the Roller Mouse: https://www.contourdesign.com/product/rollermouse-red/

It's not embedded into the keyboard, but complements most traditional keyboards nicely.

Do you mean splitting the Space Bar or in front of the Space Bar?
A rotary encoder in-between space bars would require a bit of room to the left and the right because of its size.

Personally I think I'd prefer high-precision scrolling on an analogue joystick (like IBM "Scrollpoint"), or on Fn+PgUp/PgDn.

I had something like this in mind.  The scrollwheels would be easily reached from home row and WASD.  It'd be convenient (to me at least) while gaming and maybe even working.

Please specify the point of this thread.

Are you requesting someone to design something you’d like?
Or are you pitching the project yourself (with no firmed resolution or clear idea) to gauge community interest?

If the former, this is not the correct forum.
If the latter, please provide specifics to how this would work. Also, read the rules of IC and follow the correct format for posting an IC.

I like how you're here trying to justify this guy not reading forum guidelines and posting an idea that would be much better placed in the "Making Stuff Together" subforum. This is not a request forum, this is very specifically an INTEREST CHECK forum. Interest checks exist with the assumption that something has been designed (possibly with a prototype) and this is not the case here.

@Moderators: please move this thread to "Making Stuff Together"

Can we please keep things civil? Check the post count...he's obviously a new member and made a simple mistake. You were all new once, try and remember what that's like before tearing into somebody. Now let's get back on track.

I'm pretty sure mouse wheels are rotary encoders so there's no reason you couldn't cut a hole in a case and add one to any QMK compatible PCB.  Not sure the firmware supports two but don't see why not...

How to mount it would be the fun part as they are usually mounted from below but to peek through a case it would be best to mount from 'above', inside the case.   The first step to solving this would be to find your wheels - whether they be new or salvaged from dead mice.

This is a random idea that is not going to be popular, but if you want it bad enough you can make it happen.

That's quite an interesting idea. You can take an inspiration from something like DZ60 with the split spacebar and redesign it to fit a rotary encoder into the split.

However, I don't understand why you would want that feature.

I'm not handy enough to DIY, but thanks for the suggestions!

I have volume/media mapped on a layer, but I use it enough to justify a scrollwheel to control those functions.  The main benefit for me is that I could keep my fingers on home row or WASD while using the scroll.  Other implementations (logitech, steelseries, etc.) usually have it in the upper right corner which is more out of the way than I like.  I have lazy fingers I guess :P

Just checked and this looks like the perfect PCB for the job - QMK, stabilizer wires are out of the way above the switches and the PCB itself is as short as possible which means more room for mounting at the front.

Where did I put that dead mouse :))

Mouse wheels are (in the ones I've looked at) indeed rotary encoders.  I gutted a cheap mouse for one to build a USB volume control with an Arduino.  Worked like a champ other than it being cobbled together with stuff in my desk drawers and looking like hot garbage.
