Enuff about OLD movies,
What are some gud' NEW movies Y'all seen ??
Tp4_ Recommends:
Animal World (2018) available on Netflix
It's a Chinese movie about Gambling w/ Rock Paper Scissors, on a Boat..
- Similar to Kakegurui (anime) in theme, but more focused, fewer scattered topics
- Not an action movie w/ $$$$ CGI, it's a mildly mindful thinking movie

My friend put on Upgrade to show off his big backlit TV and I enjoyed it, it's apparently low budget action/sci-fi.

How did you like it.
Tp4 thought -Upgrade (2018)- Was pretty dope.
It's like the Action-version of Scarlett Johansson's film -Her (2013)- , utilizing a similar omniscient AI speaker in ones mind setup.
What TV did ur buddy buy.
-
Yeah that's the one - this thread dictated 2018+ so couldn't be the old one (I assumed the (2018) was added to distinguish it rather than part of the actual name...) What I liked most without spoiling anything was the 'futuristic' self driving cars which looked like they were made out of boxes :))
I should have listened about the TV but as I'm not looking to buy I didn't. All I know is it's not a Sony because they don't support covering the whole room with lights, as he plans to do. Oh and it's better than the TV at his old house which used to give me headaches!

U can haz 82 inch tv for only $2000.
The self driving car would be nice, You just order stuff on Costco.com, Then send the Car there auto for pickup. Don't even gotta put pants on in the morning

Recommend me any good new film that has nothing to do with superheroes. Go.

Being -Selective- may be better, because that way we only recommend really good stuff, and not just OK stuff.

I didn't like Isn't it Romantic at all. I think it deserved the low rating that it had on the website. It just... didn't work and i found myself getting bored because i can predict what’s happening.
Ironic how a movie that tends to make fun of romantic movies ends up becoming predictable. Because it reveals that the same plot line exists in almost all romantic movies.

Free Solo (2018)..
Documentary about Alex Honnold, who is a Free-solo climber.
Climbing dangerous rockfaces -without rope-.
Mechanistically, climbers climb with-rope. Over the course of many iteration of routes and techniques, through many years, the Collective-Experience, of multiple people, culminate in minimizing the risk enough such that a certain climb could be done -sans rope-.
_Nonetheless_ it is death-defy thrill seeking..
Every other scene in the movie makes ones palm sweaty.
Overall, interesting perspective. My personal takeaway from the movie is a mental parallel. Some people win lotteries, some people eat cheese and live to age 90, some people climb rock faces without rope and survive several adventures.

I Am Mother (2019), Netflix
In a dystopian future akin to the Bunker life of, Fallout (game) , a single human is born from an artificial gestation pod. This human is raised by an AI-controlled automaton, designated -Mother-.
Fantastic CGI, Set design, Acting, lots'o Ray-Tracing.
Overall a tight budget flic, not many outdoor scenes. The Makers made their pennies Count and invested astutely to the greatest impact.
Tp4's take [Spoiler-Alert]
Story about how an AI utopia was Ruined by the addition of hughmhans.

I knew Dark Phoenix was going to fail in the theatres miserably. Instead my local movie theatre decided to put a giant poster. They should've known it wasn't going to do well.
Seems like this picture right here:

Long Shot (2019),
Seth Rogan + Charlize Theron..
Seth plays his usually doof-role as closet boyfriend next to a more serious Charlize who is candidate for president.
The film is light-heartedly shallow enough to be plausible, and expounds on the manipulative force behind modern media in a manner appropriate for the average audience.
A great comedy chic flic for young people, with not so much chic that the narrative only speaks to 1 gender.
if anyone's thinking they're too macho for chic flix, it's got Charlize Theron, mmm... such commanding visual to say the least, and this is in a Pants-Suit the whole movie.

Furie (2019)
First Vietnamese film released in the US.
Fantastic performance by lead, Veronica Ngo.
Plot is a simplified version of Taken + Ong Bak. Lots of great fight choreography.
V-Ngo plays a former gangster (racketeering), who became pregnant and left the city for farm life. She transitions to rural single motherhood. Her old life catches up with her, and city gangsters kidnap her daughter.
This movie truly advances feminism. An actual woman character without any girl-baggage.
For example, Wonder Woman, Yea, it's a woman kicking butt, but actually no, it's a leggy male-fantasy kicking butt, in impractical makeup and impractical clothing.
That is what feminists mean by _Male Gaze_ cinematography, it's suppose to be for feminism by being inclusive of women, but actually, the strength role has been thoroughly diluted by the persistent visual objectification. The audience does not see a strong woman, they see a secs object scantily clad, in context no more complicated than mud-wrestling.
In Furie, the plot is still uniquely feminine, a woman fighting for her child. The difference is the female lead is powerful in the same way the traditional man is powerful, through ruthlessness, killer instinct, and narrow determination.
The cinematography is fantastic, drone shots, frame composition, color grading, tone, atmosphere, all A+. All done on a next to nothing budget.
Have not seen anything this exciting since Thailand's Ong Bak. Vietnam Cinema is ON THE MAP.
Advisory: The vietnamese Language will initially sound a bit like baby-talk, but you get used to it. Of course there's subtitles.

Uglydolls is absolute garbage. Almost everything that comes in the preshow with the actors and people "working" on the films sucks

A Score to Settle (2019)
Nicolas Cage
Cage's been on a bad B-movie run.. This one is different.
The film takes no risks, there is 0% novelty, and the Budget is low.
YET, the arrangement and acting made the progression very smooth.
The plot is a little dice from everything you've seen before, but it unfolds quite naturally for a pleasant experience.
A great no-thinking night of sips on scotch.

The art of cinema is lost on the rushful needy.
-
Parasite (2019)
[attachimg=1]
Top Kek film from Corea.
A Hilarious Comedy depicting class struggle, indifference, and culture; Presented in well paced arcs with cohesive wit.
/Highly recommens..

Pretty sure rushful isn't a word. Prolly need to git'drunk to decode.

I thought Joker was decent. Not amazing or mindblowing, but certainly unexpected and well-acted.
I was on a plane recently and 3/4 of the people were watching some trashy looking stripper movie about stripper lesbians who poison clients or something. I only half-watched it from the corner of my eye because it's hard not to constantly get distracted by titties and shaking asses on 100 screens at once. It didn't look like a good movie at all, promoting sluttyness as sexiness and seemed to glorify these evil women poisoning their clients. 90% of the movie were just dancing scenes, there was very little actual plot, and the actual poisoning part only happened in the last 20 mins or so. The entire front 3/4 was all just strippers and lesbians, which is fine but probably not on a plane.

this is on my watch list. i think it's interesting that you call it a hilarious comedy, it seems more centered around drama/suspense themes, but ofc I haven't even watched it yet.

Code 8 (2019)
[attach=1]
Premise is similar to The Boys (tv show). Super powers + Dark'n'Gritty.
Code 8, does the Power-Noir really well, WITHOUT any Cheese, all on a B-movie budget.
Whereas even The Boys (show) had a good deal of nonsense.
Really gud'stuff

Bad Times at the El Royale
This was good.
Goes well with John Wick (the third of which was 2019).
Long Shot (2019)
I will admit, this was much better than I expected.
-
I saw the lighthouse in theaters and really enjoyed it. Sound and visuals come together to create an intense atmosphere throughout, definitely recommend.

Very much so, I thought it was going to bother me the entire time but I stopped noticing after about 10 minutes or so.

Knives Out was pretty good, Guns Akimbo was whatever, and I couldn't even finish watching Bad Boys (too boring)
The Lighthouse was fantastic, very much enjoyed that one. Didn't expect to like it at all, but those are the best films.
Also it's by no measure a new movie, but if you haven't watched Koyaanisqatsi you should do yourself that favor. Rewatched it a few days ago and it was just as moving and deep as the first time I saw it but for different reasons.
-
if you haven't watched Koyaanisqatsi you should do yourself that favor.
And that is only the first of the Qatsi trilogy.
There is also this little ditty for the Philip Glass soundtrack:

That ending footage is incredible in Koyaanisqatsi. If you feel nothing watching that you must have a heart of stone.
The other's in the series are really difficult to find unless you've already got them on DVD. Baraka and Samsara also are in the same vein of this type of film, shot with more modern equipment. But I am shocked how clear the footage from Koyaanisqatsi is considering it was made in '82. Incredible detail.

Koma (2019)
Russians + Gud' CGI. chk it out. amazballs they made this w/ only $4 mil... it'd take @ least $30 mil to approach this quality in 'murica.

Jim Carrey was the only good part of that film, the rest was just dull plodding dreck.
-
Knives out. A little bit like a murder / mystery even with a off the cheek comment about cluedo.
quite enjoyed it although Daniel Craig's accent was a bit suspect
-
The Gentlemen *2020* - highly enjoyed it and plan to watch it again as I do most Guy Ritchie movies so I can catch the small additions I might have missed.
I know I want to watch the sequel to Train to Busan as well, the first was amazing and hope they don't fully screw it up when they redo the original.
