Seems like it includes the sculptured case and PCB. No bezel is required, and the plate is of course optional.

Hmmm aluminum decorative frame or brass insert?? Decisions decisions....

I think I'm getting a special edition.
Title: Re: RS84 75% keyboard kit (USA only)
Post by: IvanIvanovich on Sat, 21 February 2015, 19:18:02
Yes, the special edition also includes the PCB, and remote as well as the case. Plate is still an extra item. Feet are not necessary with the special edition as the casebody is already at a fixed angle.
I don't have any more pictures, just these that were sent to me from the organizer in China.
Sorry about USA only again but, heavy items are very expensive to ship from USA and I think it's not worth it in general since I am only doing a proxy deal really anyway.

Yup, makes total sense.  The octagons and viper I bought were hefty shipping-wise.

Special edition has little rubber bumpons feet. I meant you don't need the metal raiser foot with it.

With production and delivery time, I believe these should be to you by May.

More likely would be $40-60.

You can't even send a small flat rate box from US to France for $20. :(

On a related note, HOW do you run so many GB's it really is a service to the communities especially as i know you are active here and on DT. (not sure if you are on /r/MK at all tho.) Yeah international shipping from USA on one of these would be like $60. This is why I sticking to USA only as it simply doesn't make sense to send these out from the USA. Maybe someone in the EU or whatever wants to act as proxy partner. I'm sure we could get something arranged.

In the meantime I asked a quote from qtan.

I'd be in for one special edition.

I was debating on whether or not I wanted to get qtan to proxy an RSIII for me, then i found this.

Now, do i want a regular or special edition?

I would be using pcb mount switches, should I get the plate for extra rigidity or would just the PCB be alright?

Well, for Global Business mail, its cheap. But if Ivan doesn't want to do that, I understand. I think the best bet is to wait to see if Qtan responds, I understand its a US only GB and I don't want to cause any trouble :)

If someone wants to take it on, I am pretty sure we can arrange to have them shipped directly to 1 person in Europe to redistribute just the same as I am doing for USA.

Sorry guys but I can't answer much technical question about these. It does use Atmega controller as these have TMK based firmware. Looking at the PCB it does appear to have possibility of using a 2.75 right shift if you wanted to.

I am just thinking out loud at the moment, as I said, we are updating our shipping methods and changing our shipping supplier, so I am not sure if we will still be using DHL and therefore can get a decent price for shipping once the GB is over.

OMG!  Is this what puberty feels like?  I suddenly find myself having strange new urges.  I keeping changing my mind.  I'm feeling irrational.

I thought I wanted a KUL ES-87.  Then I thought I'd wait a while to see how well the Matias Ergo Pro was reviewed.  Then I see the RS84 and now I want this.  With the exception of ErgoDox (I haven't yet), I thought I was too new to the hobby to get involved with customs.  There are many stock boards for me to pursue.  Hell, I haven't even touched an Alps or Topre switch yet.

I've never involved with custom keyboards before and I have so many questions.

Is the choice of 5mm or 8mm bezel simply a matter of aesthetics or are there other considerations?

Can the feet be placed at the front of the keyboard (under R1) or does the case only allow them on the back of the keyboard?

I need negative tilt on my board.  Can the case accommodate a 90 degree mini connector and will that give me enough clearance to tilt my keyboard without putting strain on the USB connector?

If I understood the OP correctly, the cost for the base kit, feet, plate, and shipping is $140.  Is that correct?

If I want to change switches after assembly, is it simply a matter of opening them and replacing the springs and sliders?  Having the ability to try Gaterons, then swap out internals and try Ergo Cherry MX Clears or MX Jailhouse Blues could more than justify the cost of this board.

P.S.  Also, why only 16 colors on LED?  Corsair RGB has 16 point 8 million!

Sorry, I couldn't resist asking that last question.

Not 100% sure, so would also be interested in a confirmation, but this page (http://deskthority.net/group-buys-f50/diy-keyboard-bundle-value-edition-t7985.html) indicates that it uses a Atmel 32U4 and is fully programmable.

Yes I believe it has the electronics pre-soldered, so all you would have to do is solder the switches in place and then assemble the case.

3mm normal led for in switch backlight, with 3 modes: always on, breathing light, light when type with adjustable speed of  the dynamic lighting.
This are the type of lightning you can use for switch backlight, and you also have RGB lightning underneath the PCB.

3mm normal led for in switch backlight, with 3 modes: always on, breathing light, light when type with adjustable speed of  the dynamic lighting.
This are the type of lightning you can use for switch backlight, and you also have RGB lightning underneath the PCB.
Do you know if we need to supply our own LEDs for the case lighting or do they come in the kit, az?

I assume we need to get our own LEDs, but am not sure which ones I would need to get.

So we can still add in LED of our choice for the individual switches, and have some effects on them?

Case led (which are in fact underneath the PCB) are already soldered and ready to light. They should light right away when you plug the PCB in and you control them with a remote. Unless it's different from the RS96.

And then you can solder switches leds.

Since orders are closing tomorrow, and this is basically just a proxy buy, what's a reasonable timeline for us to receive these? I read through the OP and the majority of the thread, but I didn't see anything about it.

Just curious!

Cool, loving all the help! Will either costar or cherry stabs work? And what determines which stabs I can use, cutouts on the PCB? Always wondered that...

Cherry PCB mount stabs ONLY. There are no mounts on the plate for any stabs at all. You'll find that's common in most customs.

:thumb: You guys are the best! Thanks! Time to comb the Living Soldering thread and pick my starter set (if you have cursory recommendations, I'm all ears :) ).

And based on this comment, I take it costar stabs are more popular with plate mount switches and cherry with PCB mount?

If you plan on doing much soldering, the Hakko FX-888D is a good one to start with.

I do intend to pick up soldering more, at the bare minimum I'd like to feel comfortable soldering so I can do switch swaps... but I could see  this spiraling out into a large love for more intense hardware customization :)). Thanks for the recco! I've seen the Hakko mentioned a lot, so I guess I'll get an FX-888D for a starter, thanks! Is there a particular chisel tip that works best for keyboards?

Will you post in this thread when you know if you have leftovers? And I assume we'll fill out another Google Form and get invoiced separately for the stabs, but everything will be shipped together, correct?

The 1.75u shift needs stabs, right? Never dealt with that size before.

I mean... there's that really convenient Gateron group buy going on right now... Could do some clears, or blacks, or try their browns.

Personally, I'll be getting some Gateron browns. If those aren't tactile enough, I'll just make some 62g ergo clears.

The Clears sound like they'll be too soft. I'll probably get 100 blues and 100 blacks. I have a JD40 with Linear Greys and I love the feel I get from them. I suspect the sensation won't be the same on a larger keyboard though.

Have to decide on my led scheme for this too. I'll probably do cyan and magenta so I can swap effortlessly between my GMK dolch, future r4 Miami/Odessa, or the Purple Hangul set from kin.

Keyboard building is so exciting

I mean... you could try out SIP sockets and see if you can really get hot-swappable LEDs. I've heard they're a bit of a ***** to install, but I'll be giving it a shot! And this is all incredibly exciting :D.

I got no problem waiting a few months, will be healthier for my wallet and give me more time for the Gaterons to come in :). Thanks Ivan!

Can you provide a list of damaged items and pictures for me?717758631@qq.comI think we should be able to find the best approach.

For those of you who ordered the special edition, I didn't get any bolt to affix the weight and didn't see a reason to delay shipping them due to this. You can source your own size M5*8 countersink type bolt, or I can source some to send at some later time.

Just finished building mine, everything went well except I noticed one of the rbg leds under the pcb was broken from the factory or shipping, no biggie since I have the SE and you can't really tell with the diffuser case. Should be the same for the bezel case.

I'll hunt for m5x8 screws tomorrow.

FN+Esc for the under pcb RBG led modes
FN+B for switch led modes, FN+V to turn on/off switch leds

The FN key is above the right arrow key.

Very happy overall, the SE is awesome.

Thanks for another successful GB Ivan.

Not sure if my PM went through (I think I forgot to check the "save PM" option). Unfortunately my case didn't survive shipping perfectly, but it seems to be damaged in a way that is perhaps okay. Basically ~6 of the plastic screwholes in the case seem to have broken off and a small diode (maybe?) seems to have been stripped off of the PCB. Is this normal? Should I ignore it and start building? Or should I figure out return shipping/wait for a new board/case? Something other option?

Thanks!

If you think of RGB light enough to even do this. It applies to RS96 and RS84.
RGB led Strip must be 5V.
Modify it to the fullest. If necessary ,use the USB3.0

Whatever was in the .hex file fixed it! I flashed it using the offline method (print to text printer) and it flashed successfully. When I get more time I'll play with the key-mapping.

I created my keymap via keyboard-layout-editor.com (http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/) but then I noticed TMK Keymap Generator (http://www.enjoyclick.org/tkg/) doesn't seem to have an selection for the RS84.  I'm a bit lost on how to create the eep file.

Putting this here in case anyone else has the same issue as me. The little RGB LED remote that arrived with my kit did not work. There's something rattling around in it and it doesn't come apart easily to see what going on inside.

The model number you want to look for if replacing it is APA 1616.

If you have a Harmony remote, you can find this remote under Home Automation > Light Controllers > APA > APA 1616.

If you have an Android device with an infrared blaster, you can use this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.harrygr.rcoid&hl=en and use the APA 1616 configuration file from the app site: http://rcoid.de/remotes.html#ChinaNoname

I used the Android app before figuring out how to have the Harmony remote work as well.

Interesting idea.  I'm guessing the creator of the RS84 intended for the configuration process to be identical to the RS96 and just hasn't gotten around to adding support in TKG.  One thing I might try doing if I get impatient is to edit the codebase for the RS96 on kairyu's TMK branch (https://github.com/kairyu/tmk_keyboard_custom/tree/master/keyboard/RedScarfIII) to work for the RS84.  I have to believe this code already exists somewhere though...

you guys should try to have the RS96 selected and then input a layout where the non existant caps are blank.

Considering the RS96 pcb can be cut to be 75% it's possibly the exact same hardware underneath.

Not a bad idea azhdar.  I will try to add a blank 6x4 cluster to my layout and see if it works.

Where do you see that preset as an option, on http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/ ? I don't see it. thanks
digi, I just started with the preset for the Keycool 84 and modified it (for my split backspace layout) but it might be easier to start with a full layout and cut it down if you want to follow azhdar's suggestion.

Is there an easier to use software for programming TMK keymap?
The only other alternative I know of is modifying the TMK keymap file(s) directly and compiling it yourself.  It's not hard but creating the layout via keyboard-layout-editor.com and then copying the raw data into TKG to generate the hex is easier imo.

Alright I think I figured it out - I had the layout wrong.  You pretty much have to get the keyboard text *exactly* right for TKG to work (text position matters).  There is no need to trick TKG into thinking you have an RS96.  See my working layout here (http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/#/layouts/7a7dc5bd42cf3e8222254500d01ba98a).  I was able to use the RawData from this layout along with TKG to generate the eep file.  After flashing the eep file via offline flashing everything works as I expect.

I would not recommend using the KeyCool 84 preset as a starting point.  I would use my layout as a starting point and add/remove layers as necessary.  Pretty much everything azhdar's guide (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=69282.0) says for the RS96 applies here.

digi, you can create multiple layers with the keyboard layout editor and then copy into TKG using All-In-One Layer Mode.

I didn't have to do any of that "Import Fn" stuff.  Not sure what it's there for although, to be honest, I'm not doing anything fancy with the LEDs.  I used TKG to map Fn2 to toggle LEDs and Fn3 to step through LED colors but that's about it.

My space bar isn't pressing well, too wobbly. I hope this stabilizer I put in isn't having issues. Would have to desolder everything. Might it have anything to do with the space bar stabilizer being flipped upside down on this pcb?

I don't think that's a particularly unusual configuration.  I haven't experienced any problems with the RS84, RS96, or Lightsaver.

thanks. It's probably something with the stabilizer itself then. I have a bad feeling the stab wire somehow got under the sliders or something..ugh.

*Fixed! The stab wire popped out, I was able to jimmy each side of it and slide the wire back into the stab sliders, good to go.

Ivan, did everything go out?  Would like to know a rough estimate of when to expect a package so I can have someone look out for it.

I am still waiting to arrange something for damage item on 2 orders (taylordcraig and dblr). You 2 were the last in the list for those particular item, so you got the unlucky draw. The delux case is very badly broken, but perhaps could be made usable again with some expertly done epoxy though with very apparent cosmetic flaw. The other order issue is with a top bezel, which has a pretty decent sized scrape/gouge to the finish on a top facing corner. If you prefer not to wait and see about repair yourself to get going I can go ahead and send the items if you wish.
Otherwise everything else has gone out.

Thanks for the update! I'm fine with the scratch for now, please go ahead and send it out asap (excited about this build). Do you have any info on sourcing a new bezel? I'm willing pay for it and shipping if/when one becomes available? Thanks again!
