Title: [GB] Duck Orion/Black Bird Weight Insert (Invoicing/Shipping)
Post by: merlin64 on Mon, 02 January 2017, 11:22:57
Happy New Year Everyone!!

If you've been following along on the threads, you've been waiting awhile, but it's finally here!

If you would like to see how this started or have questions please see any of the 2 ICs listed below. I suspect most questions can be answered by reading these.

Black Bird IC:  https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=85641.0
Orion V1/V2 IC: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=85723.0

What:
Weight inserts for the Duck Black Bird and Orion V1/V2 keyboards available in Brass and Stainless Steel. Engraving optional. Please note that the weight fits both the Orion V1 and V2.

Orion Weight: 1.25 lbs (.56 kg)
Black Bird Weight: 13-14 oz (.36-.39) kg

Tungsten is indeed an option, but you gotta have deep pockets. The option is in the form and will require you to message me directly about it. It's more than twice as dense as brass.

Price - these are for either Black Bird or Orion weights ONLY.
Blank Brass: $60
Engraved Brass: $70

Blank Stainless Steel: $45
Engraved Stainless Steel: $55

Payments will be done via PayPal

Open for International Orders?
Yeess!!

Shipping Costs:
US: Medium Flat Rate Boxes
International: First Class or Flat Rate depending on how many you order

Please check with https://www.usps.com/ for estimates.

I will be billing you for shipping once I receive all the weights. Please note that this is an additional cost.

Payments DUE Monday 1/24/2016 by 9 pm PST

Of course the earlier the better, and I'll try to send out ALL invoices by tomorrow. If you have a payment issue, please don't hesitate to contact me, and I can work something out with you.

Q&A

What if I don't like the engravings available?
You are free to order a blank plate and have a local engraver engrave it for you.

What happened to the Eagle/Viper weight?
That's happening next. Hopefully in 2-3 months.

Why are the prices so high/much higher than Octagon V2 weight
The Octagon V2 weight was my first GB, and admittedly both my manufacturer and I made mistakes and underestimated quite a few things. The end result was that the prices were actually much cheaper than they should have been for what we wanted.

Is Tungsten a joke?
Yes and No. Yes as in it started off as a pipe dream because people were complaining that the BB weight was too light. We talked about tungsten, depleted uranium, gold, platinum etc etc. All these are much heavier than the stainless steel and brass options. No as in...there are actually people with deep pockets who want to see this, so I've left it as an option. Tungsten is the most affordable out of the lot, but if someone has the money for gold or platinum, I won't turn them away. It's just.....I'd rather go buy a car than a stinkin weight for my keyboard.

What if I can't pay?
I'm running this GB just so that people can have an opportunity to buy a weight such as this. If for some reason or another you can't pay by the deadline and you really want this, shoot me a message. I'm more than willing to work things out for people.

I'm in for an engraved brass weight.

Please, OP, don't write in yellow. I use a less eye-harming theme and can't read yellow very well.

In for a Black Bird engraved brass; thanks Merlin!

What's the estimated time frame for the GB after the sign up is over?
Title: Re: [GB] Duck Orion/Black Bird Weight Insert!
Post by: merlin64 on Tue, 03 January 2017, 15:15:46
The last one for the Octagon V2 took 6 months lol.

I'm hoping to do it a whole lot faster than that. We have learned from our mistakes, and ready to make more! LOL. It all started when some community member congratulated me on a perfectly run GB. So no one commend me for anything until this is done.

I would estimate (if all goes well) that it would take up to a month for me to receive all the weights, and probably 2-3 weeks of me mailing things out. I'm a 1 man + 1 wife operation and doing all the logistics can take awhile. Please be advised that this is only my 2nd GB.

Of course something always gets in the way, so factor that in.

Hiiiii~ Was wondering, how do we choose our engraving?
Title: Re: [GB] Duck Orion/Black Bird Weight Insert!
Post by: merlin64 on Wed, 04 January 2017, 08:11:56
There should be an option for each keyboard weight for engraving, or no engraving.
Title: Re: [GB] Duck Orion/Black Bird Weight Insert!
Post by: JaccoW on Wed, 04 January 2017, 08:22:37
Was there already a consensus on the engraving or can we request something specific?
Title: Re: [GB] Duck Orion/Black Bird Weight Insert!
Post by: merlin64 on Wed, 04 January 2017, 10:03:17
The chosen engravings are the ones depicted in the form. I am unable to accept more than 1 engraving per keyboard weight. That will increase the cost for everyone involved. What people in the past did was order a blank plate, and have a local engraver do it for them.

Please keep in mind, that the only way to see the engraving is to open up your keyboard.

How much heavier will the brass piece be compared to the SS one?

If an Orion V3 GB goes up in the future, will you consider running another GB for these weights?

The little stars were indeed dropped.

Were they too difficult to engrave?
Title: Re: [GB] Duck Orion/Black Bird Weight Insert!
Post by: merlin64 on Sun, 08 January 2017, 17:26:05
The difference in weight is negligible. Though brass is indeed heavier than stainless steel.

The stars are quite difficult to engrave properly and will probably take a bit longer to do
Title: Re: [GB] Duck Orion/Black Bird Weight Insert!
Post by: merlin64 on Sun, 08 January 2017, 17:27:11
Also, I am up for doing weights of all kinds, but as there has been no mention of a V3 I cannot guarantee that this weight.

Thanks. It looks good without them too.

There might be a case for a pre-emptive buy here.

Not sure if there will be a BB GB again, maybe a BB V2 GB.

I'd be interested in running another GB. I'm sorry if that's rather vague but I don't exactly have a schedule of my planned GBs yet.

Few more days until the conclusion of the GB, not getting as many orders as I did with the Octagon V2 hopefully everyone who has a BB or an Orion has seen this post. @_@. I might have to keep this open longer to get more orders in. Maybe Monday evening at 8:59 pm PST I'll get like another 50 or so haha.

As long is it doesn't say so in the mechmarket rules (it's a 5 min read) it's fine. Either way if you link this thread everyone will know who you are, they are more or less the same people, just more of them.

Just want this to be successful and worthwhile for Merlin. We all want these weights, but don't want it to be charity work.

Hey Guys,

The closing date has come and gone, and we still didn't even reach the total of how many Octagon V2 weights sold. I'm a bit disappointed as I didn't expect that combined weights would be less than the single weight from my previous GB.

As of this posting
Total BB Orders: 31
Total Orion Orders: 14

As a result, I'm going to keep this open for one more week. Closing January 23rd 9 pm PST.

I think I'm going to start PMing black bird and orion owners if I can find the original purchase lists somewhere on GeekHack.

Wow thanks! Looking at those sheets, I'm already seeing quite a few names that didn't make it on my GB. I'll send a PM their way. Hopefully it's just a case of "oh i didn't know" rather than a "your GB sucks man!"

a "I don't have enough money" is understandable though.

Well at least with the Black Bird, the weight isn't visible unless you open the case so I could see why some people might not be interested.  The low turnout for the Orion weight is confusing though...

Thanks for putting your time and effort into the GB though, it's definitely appreciated :D

Duck actually sells this but last I heard its well above $100 and you have to pay shipping on top of that.

Trickling for sure haha. The GB period is closed, but the order form will remain open as I iron out the details with my manufacturer. We are still a lot less than we anticipated. At this time we have 51 combined total orders.

We were anticipating at least the same number of orders as the Octagon V2, which was in the 50s, but with the combined orders we were thinking maybe 60 to 70ish.

The payment due date has passed but there are still a few of you who haven't paid. Thankfully some already reached out and discussed payment plans. For those of you who haven't, I'd appreciate a PM regarding if you're backing out or not, mainly so I don't feel so much like a jerk when I press the cancel invoice button and then 2-3 months later, I sell you the same thing for twice the price LOL.

But seriously, if you back out no hard feelings. Just let me know.

Update

Late/New payers are still accepted primarily due to

1. Been pulling 11-12 hour days at work to meet a deadline, so been pretty busy
2. Tungsten final pricing hasn't been resolved yet
3. Videos for my YouTube channel giving me issues on audio quality lol.
4. I'm still getting random PMs about joining the GB, so why not.

Yes, due to the rare nature of this product I have purposely hidden their name from the spreadsheet. When the GB ends, they may or may not choose to reveal themselves. Regardless, I will post photos of the units when I receive them so everyone can ooh and aah over shiny things.

I tried to convince someone to order a platinum one, which I would gladly hand deliver personally, but the cost was about equivalent to a year of college tuition fees lol.

UPDATE

Couple people dropped out of the GB during the invoicing stage and a few others just never even replied. I've canceled all outstanding invoices and will proceed to submit the order as I tally things up.

Due to the change in order quantity, the prices will probably shift upwards a little bit. I plan to deal with this in one or combination of the following ways.

1. Eat Ramen and feed my family Ramen for 1 month
2. Keep the original order total and sell the unclaimed orders for a little profit
3. Just eat up the cost if its not too much
4. Ask for donations during the shipping invoicing stage
5. Issue refunds to everyone and declare the GB failed

I'll keep you all posted.

Thank you everyone for your support. This is a great example of what makes this community so great! For those who have paid, I would just like to re-iterate that I haven't absconded with your money or anything, it's still sitting in my PayPal account. You have my guarantee that if this GB does fail, you will receive back every penny you gave me.

But anyway, another bit of bad news. Tungsten is now also a no go. We had only one person sign up for one engraved Orion tungsten weight. The total for one unit was $865 due to the fact that it was a one off, and it also includes the price for my manufacturer to buy the extra tooling to accommodate it. I wasn't kidding when I advertised $500 MINIMUM. $865 was still doable but after a few extra days to think it over, my one buyer thought better. I don't blame him.

$865 can get me 2 additional Duck keyboards! Perhaps if the weights were all a universal size between Duck's keyboards it would have been a more viable purchase. Perhaps that's something that can be suggested for his Eagle/Viper/Octagon/etc V3 series or something.

But for those of us who came late...no recourse. It was hard enough to get the money to even make this happen, means basically no chance for those of us on the secondary market unless someone from this GB ordered two or changes their mind.

Problem is that not everyone who purchases a Duck also wants a weight. I personally am happy to spend another $60 on a board I care about, but most people's wallets are hurting after the cost of the board itself.

Another thing to note about Duck boards is that the weights are not visible in any way unless you disassemble the keyboard.

Unfortunately there just isn't enough demand to guarantee that enough people are willing to come together and make a GB like this one happen.

I don't think all Duck boards mount the weights inside the board.

That's actually what happened with the Octagon Weight GB. I ended up sending all the Stainless Steel ONLY orders first. However those who did brass, or brass and stainless came much later. I don't think I'll have to do that this time around.

UPDATE

The update is that there is no update. I didn't receive a status email from my manufacturer this week. I've checked in as well and no reply. Hopefully he's just really busy with our weights!

In other news, I would like to publicly express my frustration and my apologies with how long this is taking. I understand that 3 weeks were wasted just waiting on materials but it's still taking too long. The good news is that I am still waiting for Duck to send me the CAD files for the Viper/Eagle, so it's not like I have a GB on hold. At this point I'm shopping around for other local manufacturers.

What I could also do is that if I get the CAD file, I can ask my mechanical engineer friends to cut me one if possible.

The machine shop seems to be overloaded with other projects. With some of their tooling breaking it's created quite a queue. I have no news as to when this will be done and I don't want to keep saying "oh next week".

I apologize for the long wait and I hope we can get this figured out soon.

Any good news regarding a Viper/Eagle weight? Loved your Octagon weight :)

I'm thinking that there won't be a GB. I might just open an interest check, and buy what I think the quantities would be. That way people aren't waiting forever for their weights while I hold on to their money. It's just sad that my weight is taking just as long or longer as it takes Duck to ship the keyboards to us.

I believe he's saying that he'll just put in an order and have them up for sale, rather than the typical GB method where you wait for everyone to prepay and then do the order.

Will we have a way to put in a deposit? I'm 100% in for two Viper weights.

@merlin64 I don't mind the wait on GBs like this one, first of all since I am still using my Orion through all of this, it's not something that I 'need' for the board to be functional. On top of that plenty of GBs experience delays in manufacturing, shipping, etc. which is understandable, the thing I care most about it the quality of the product. If after all this time I receive a perfectly machined and finished weight, I will be happy. If I wait all this time for a dented/dinged weight that looks like ****, obviously the time will seem wasted. It's all a matter of perspective I guess.

I would be down to buy/pre-order a Viper/Eagle weight today, no matter the wait time, no matter the cost. What worries me about you buying them all and then just selling them is me not getting one.

Anyway, just some food for thought, keep us updated on the Blackbird and Orion weights!

I'm just trying to find a better solution. I said this GB wouldn't last as long as my previous one, but it's getting close. I'm already pretty confident about changing manufacturers but that also might come with higher costs etc etc.

I'm open to any and all suggestions. But please hold on to them until I can get an IC thread running. =)

I messaged him a few days ago and got this update, guess he forgot to post about it:

I'll be making a post today about the weights. He's done, but I noticed on some of the photos that a plate was scratched, so I asked him to fix it. This was last week and I haven't heard back...he might have discovered more scratched plates and knew I wasn't going to take it.

I just do it to make sure people (and you) know who I am addressing. Makes more sense in threads like the Viper GB where a 'mini GB' for diffusers sprung up inside an existing thread with multiple people coordinating stuffs.

Anyway, hope to see some photos soon! I lined up an engraver for my plate ages ago now I just need to get it!

Weights are in boxes and ready to ship to me! I actually asked him to hold on to it for a bit longer so delay is 100% my fault this time. Not gonna be here this weekend to receive such a large/heavy package figured it would be safer to just put it off for a few more days.

After receiving, plan is to test fit again on a community member's blackbird. Please remember that I have neither of the boards so totally relying on people with Duck boards to do this.

I don't mind paying shipping. I'm sure someone somewhere will eventually want it with people paying $600 for keycaps... heh... may be guilty of this myself.

UPDATE

Alright guys, took me the weekend and a better part of this afternoon going through all this stuff. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to send them back. My sincere apologies for an overly long GB that still doesn't look like it will be finishing up soon. I've made comments during this GB that I have become unhappy with our manufacturer. This only further solidifies that point. Regardless, I will make this right but I'm going to need some input.

[attach=1][attach=2][attach=3]
[attach=4][attach=5][attach=6]

These are the issues I noticed:
1. Micro scratches very prevalent on Brass weights Orion and Blackbird. Can't feel them and need the right light and angle.
2. Circular marks on the screw holes for the stainless steel weights
3. Different sizes and engraving used for stainless steel Orion and Blackbird
4. While they are mirror finished, the brass looks to have tarnished a bit but elbow grease seems to clear it back up.

These are the good things:
1. Mirror finish is actually mirror finish unlike the Octagon V2 weights
2. Thanks to thesircheddar, black bird weights confirmed to fit. Though that should not be surprising as these CAD files are from Duck. He can chime in here with what he saw. The pictures really don't catch the extent of the issues.

What I Propose:
I have come to the conclusion that mirror finish to the level of Duck is very hard to do even at the higher price point we are at. The Duck weights straight from Duck are over $90+ shipping. But those are made somewhere in Asia and may have reduced costs. I estimate that we need to be hitting $120 or more to get that kind of quality. I've looked at some of the recent customs that have come out and their weights are actually of the brushed variant. I may have been too overconfident and over positive in this endeavor. For that I once again apologize to you all.

In the pictures I have also included my Octagon V2 weight. That is a brushed finish and looks really good actually. My proposal is to have my manufacturer polish ALL the weights in the same way. It will get rid of all the scratches at the cost of the mirror finish. I'll also be talking with him about some potential reimbursements.

In regards to the engraving, that completely threw me off course, I'll have to talk with him more regarding what happened.

But of course this is a GB for you guys. I don't even have a Blackbird/Orion so the decision is all yours.

Would you prefer to:
1. I don't care, no one sees the weight anyway, just give it to me. I'm tired, let's get it over and done with, you suck.
2. Wait a little longer, it sucks that it's going to be brushed, but at least there won't be any scratches
3. Have him redo this whole order...I can wait another couple months...sigh....
4. <Your proposal here>

I really don't want to do #3. Either way, I'm gonna try and come up with some form of refund, this is totally unacceptable.

another vote for #1 here... seems like we can buff out the imperfections ourselves fairly easily (on the brass weights) but i think its going to be pretty difficult for the guys that ordered stainless, those maybe should be candidates to send back, those circular marks look like a real SOB to get rid of.

I was thinking that when a screw goes over the screwhole it'd cover the circles. Otherwise, it's really fine considering the marks won't show as the PCB and plate will be above the weight...

The screws will only cover the countersunk portion unfortunately.

The prospect of a run of viper weights through Duck is exciting!

That's actually a good idea! I'll just have to figure out how to juggle the international orders as they'll get a bigger "refund" than us CONUS folk.

These weights aren't visible and are only for internet flex and make the already heavy kb more heavy.

I don't like how they turned out either. I'm reaching out to you guys asking what you guys want me to do. So far most people want option #1 but I'm open to suggestions. I'm not going to impose the will of the majority on individuals either. If you want yours "re-surfaced" so to speak, please do speak up. If you're completely unhappy and would rather strangle me, I'd beg you to re-consider and maybe work out some kind of refund with me instead.

Either way, I don't want you to be in the hole because the manufacturer didn't deliver, so if they give you some kind of refund sure, otherwise, I'll pay what I agreed to!

I seem to be in the minority here but I would be happy with option #2, as the brushed finish on my Fjell weight looks great IMO and the finish on my stainless steel TX87 weight is crazy fingerprint magnet. Also those brass Orion weights look like hell.

Obviously I am not going to insist that you do anything against what the majority of GB participants want, but if the final decision is to just ship the weights as is, don't bother sending mine. I am in the mindset that the money I spent is for a product of a certain level of quality and craftsmanship and a scratched and ****ty weight isn't something I am interested in owning and/or putting in my keyboard. If there is no follow through on delivering a quality product I will simply consider this a failed GB in my book and move on, no hard feelings.

Alternatively I would prefer option #3, as the time is irrelevant to me. I don't mind waiting for a higher quality/better product.

I still want the weight I paid for, and am still anticipating the Viper V2 weight GB.

This is a tricky place to be stuck in. A bit of advice to you, maybe talk to someone like LeandreN, who has handled the Fjell R1 GB through issues and mistakes very professionally and transparently and read through the Mech27 GB thread (by XX7) as an example of what not to do in a similar situation. I hope the absolute best for you Merlin and I will continue to respect you as a community member no matter what your final decision is.

Lawd

I sold my Black Bird but am still technically in on this GB. Personally, I think the brushed looks good and see that as a suitable option... for brass. I'm not sure how it would turn out for SS. In the end, it's a $50 weight that goes inside a case so I don't really see #1 as any kind of egregious sin.

I'd be pretty happy with option #2. #1 could work as well, but the scratches would annoy me enough that I'd have to get a local place to polish it (I hate doing polishing by hand, frankly).

He literally said two posts above you that he was not going to impose the will of the majority on everyone, so if you want option #2 or #3 than it sounds like he would be more than willing to do that.  merlin64 has been extremely transparent this entire GB so I don't think he needs to look to other members of the community for advice on how to handle this situation, as I cannot think of any better way he could be handling this than how he is doing it right now; by asking each member of the GB their opinion on what they want done with their individual product.

My personal opinion, which people don't necessarily have to agree or abide by is that I take ALL of them back to the manufacturer and have them all have a brushed finish. That way everyone will have the same product. In the future I won't be reading about "WTS Duck Blackbird/Orion with shiny weight + small scratches" vs "WTS Duck Blackbird/Orion with Brushed weight". And don't forget engraved vs non engraved is another qualifier.

However I understand that some people don't mind too much and just want the weight for what it is..a weight. This works better in a way as with fewer weights to re-do, my manufacturer should theoretically get them done faster. I'll be happy to ship those out to the ones who have specified so either in this thread or via PM to me.

Meanwhile still waiting on replies. The order tracker form should be updated shortly as well with people's responses.

I didn't mean to come off as hostile in my post, just wanted to put my two sense out there. While Merlin has been very transparent there has been a lot of "updates coming on ___ date!" only to not post anything for a week followed by "Nvm, more delays from factory." which I understand is not his fault, but isn't exactly the best way to communicate in my opinion.

I also don't want Merlin to have to personally invest any further into making this GB happen, so I don't want to be the one guy who forces him to have a weight refinished if nobody else wants to go down that path.

I'm happy with the weight as-is.. so #1 for me.. even if Merlin does suck. Which he doesn't of course. Been in enough GB's that this is still a positive outcome for me. #2 is fine too. No need for #3.

I can't even remember if my Octagon v2 weight was brushed or polished.. or even what material it is. So that alone is enough to convince me that it don't matter too much.

I understand where HappyCatFish is coming from. It can be extremely frustrating to not hear anything from the GB leader. He has the right to be mad, in fact all of you do too. HappyCatFish, I did not take anything you said as an offense to me in anyway, so we're cool. I treated it as an honest and constructive criticism of my GB leading ways, which I thank you for.

I don't want to invest too much personally either. But if I have to I will. Like I'm not going to go homeless or anything. It's like a job, you put your best foot forward and get the job done to the best of your ability.

In terms of the updates:

When I don't hear something, I say to myself "the manufacturer forgot, I'll hear from him tomorrow, and then I'll update". Which of course doesn't happen. I had tried doing the updates every Wednesday, but then I wouldn't hear anything. In some cases I'd put up "Nothing to report" message after waiting only for the guy to message me later on that same day or a day later. Then the 1 week timer keeps shifting.  I think in future GBs the correct if not better way to communicate would be to simply just report every week regardless.

That's perfectly fine, but your main argument seemed to be that he was going to force the majority decision on everyone when he said he wasn't.  And sure, there is always some way a GB runner can improve but overall, I think that merlin has run this one extremely well and given fairly frequent updates given the delays and other issues that have happened.

another vote for #1 here... seems like we can buff out the imperfections ourselves fairly easily (on the brass weights) but i think its going to be pretty difficult for the guys that ordered stainless, those maybe should be candidates to send back, those circular marks look like a real SOB to get rid of.

The screws will only cover the countersunk portion unfortunately.

It depends on what kind of grease your body produces! =P

It involves very rigorous rubbing with a lot of pressure. You have to hold it in the right angle and just go up and down up and down with some cloth and some kind of rubbing compound. The fluid can get into the grooves so you have to make sure to wipe it clean when you're done.

I have an actual brass polisher fluid so I guess it helped a bit.

Before going to uni I once did an internship in metal works and learned and practiced milling, turning, drilling and cnc as well as finishing techniques.

The circular scratches around the drill holes appear, when the drill breaks through on the other side and the person drilling stopps applying force too late, so the part holding the drill bit smashes into the metal. If the manufacturer knew what he was doing, he would have either put something underneath the plate (e.g. a piece of wood) or drilled more carefully. This is what I learned in Germany in a three week course, so a metal manufacturer should know how to avoid this rookie mistake.

However these things happen and I dont mind scrubbing and polishing my plate a bit.

I am just looking forward to putting this into my orion and hope shipping and taxes won't be too high.

What is your plan now? When do you plan on shipping to those who are happy with #1?

I haven't really ever worked with metal and I opted for Option #1. If someone could lead me step by step (including materials, where to buy them (Amazon?), etc) on how to rid of the circular marks on the SS weight, it'd be great. If as Merlin says, option #2 does not take long, then I might be willing to wait a bit longer for a perfectly clean weight...

Alright, after a period of no responses I was starting to get worried, but manufacturer has been in contact with me since yesterday. He's open to brushing all the weights and estimates it to take a week. Knock on wood. I should be delivering the weights to him sometime this week when I can find time between all this Seattle meetup stuff.

I'll also start packing all the option #1 peoples and picking up the rest of the screws.

Random Note: In case people don't know, ketchup and/or lemon juice works pretty well when polishing up brass. I prefer ketchup as it's easy to smear on and works kind of like a paste.

If you want to do this: please make sure your ketchup has a good amount of vinegar in it. I got some with none to basically none once which didn't work at all. The McDonalds ketchup works great  :thumb:
A mix of baking soda and lemon juice works insanely well, quite a lot better than I first expected, so it's also worth a shot.

UPDATE

Hey guys, just wanted to leave a short update before a very busy weekend. I've gotten quite a few weights bubble wrapped and ready to go, not as many as I had hoped. I'm trying to get the packing done first before I send out an invoice, so I'm not holding on to anymore money for any longer. Refunds of some form are still being negotiated.

In other news I'm waiting to meet with the manufacturer in person for more discussion/negotiation and hand offs. He's not certain he can properly re-surface the stainless steels so trying to figure out what to do there.

For those who are going to the Seattle Meetup this Saturday, please PM me so I know to just bring your weight to you. For all those interested in catching presentations from Binge, The Van Keyboards, Jchan, and Joshua of Plugable, please tune in to www.twitch.tv/topclack at 11 am PST tomorrow morning July 22nd. I'll be manning the cameras and other things so you may catch a glimpse of me.

Also, I probably won't be responding to any messages after tonight, so if you message me then, you won't get a reply till earliest Monday.

Hey guys, manufacturer found some time to pick weights up last night. If you haven't messaged me yet, good news you're getting a brushed weight. Hopefully we'll get it sooner rather than later.

For the rest of you option 1-ers, shipping this week, expect to see invoices!

Also for those who were watching the meetup on live stream yesterday, I apologize for the really crappy video quality. For some reason our main camera failed to be detected by OBS. Combination of things led to the errors. Someone tripped over our HDMI->USB adapter box and possibly damaged it. Laptop we were using for streaming was also fairly funky, as things were working better on different laptop. Anyway for those interested you can catch it on www.twitch.tv/topclack

UPDATE

Invoices starting to go out! Please check your addresses! I'm prioritizing US shipments first still as you international orderers are a teeny bit more complex. Regardless, these are only the people who messaged me about option 1. Everyone else, we still got some time to go.

UPDATE

Option #1 orders slowly but surely trickling out. I'd like to remind you all again that you can check your status at the following link:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12ZTdXHJeYWyP5zFY4IrgfYe7uUm-DjkqyLiN3JJEri8/edit?usp=sharing

In terms of Option #2 orders....manufacturer still working on them but the good news is that I may have overreacted, the "scratches" are being buffed out successfully...so I hear. I should be getting pics sometime soon to see if the buffing is acceptable or if the resurfacing truly is necessary. The marks around the screw holes are being fixed regardless.

Hi Merlin,

a friend of mine picked mine up from customs today. Overall i'm quite happy with it and already built it into my orion. Typing feels different and much smoother now!

Sadly I can't find the screws you sent, which is probably due to the fact that my friend who picked it up from customs had to open it there and thew the box away. Luckily I had one extra screw from assemlbling my orion, so the weight is now held in place by a single screw until I get around to buy a set of new screws.

Thank you for running the group buy!

Cheers kacase.

Thanks for checking in kacase! The screws are in a small bag, taped to the packaging used to wrap the weight in. Look around your packaging, it should be there. Holding it down with 1 screw is quite scary.....I hope nothing bad happens.

As the weight only rests on the aluminium base, I think the worst thing that could happen is that my 4kg Orion falls trough my desk.

Ok honestly though....did you guys really feel a difference in weight? The blackbird weight has gotta be one of the lightest weights I've ever seen. It's lighter than the Octagon V2 one, and definitely lighter than the Orion V2

i do definitively notice a difference in weight and also in the typing feeling, as vibrations are reduced. My orion v2 is now even nicer.

Any updates on the option 2 weights? Are they in transit to you yet or still at the factory?

My opinion on the actual weight of the weight is irrelevant. I have a huge SS weight in my TX87 and it's so heavy it's almost impractical. The Orion V2 w/ alu base makes the board plenty heavy enough and the weight is more 'bling factor' than anything else.

Went from 1880g to 23xxg, not insanely noticeable but whatever, at least now it's more than just 20g heavier than my 60%, haha.

The mention of tungsten weights inspired me to get one for my Orion on my own:

Though, I've switched the key caps to these lately:

Yeah, it's almost 10 lbs, but honestly... I don't think weight is all THAT important. It's pretty crazy how heavy it is. I'm using a carbon fiber plate though, which shaves a significant amount of weight off compared to the original stainless steel plate.

The switches are Alps and the caps are PBT as well, so that's a tad bit heavier compared to MX and ABS.

More than I want to admit, haha.

Yeah, well I actually like how carbon fiber feels as a plate material!  :)) I had to make up for that shaved weight by using tungsten, of course!

Finally picked up my package today. Was waiting at the post office for close to a week now.
(http://i.imgur.com/iW2DDgwh.jpg) (http://imgur.com/iW2DDgw)
Layers upon layers of bubble wrap wrapped in brown packing paper.

(http://i.imgur.com/8oSXflch.jpg) (http://imgur.com/8oSXflc)
Slightly dirty but nothing a bit of soap can't clean.

(http://i.imgur.com/qYJHg7Fh.jpg) (http://imgur.com/qYJHg7F)
Sweet!

Keyboard weighs 3579 grams right now and it's noticeably heavier. Definitely hard to pick up with a single hand now. :P
Used to be a little less than 3 Kg.

There are some machine marks on the back and around a few of the screws but honestly I don't care. It's great knowing it is there and it feels like a good finish to this board.

Received my Orion weight today. Honestly I am not particularly impressed with the 'refinish', there are dozens of small spots and blemishes all over the weight, and some strange striations across the weight. There was also some gunk around the edge of the weight that I was able to wipe off and gunk inside the countersunk screw holes. Not sure if my standards are too high or if I am justified in my disappointment.

Here are some photos I took after wiping down, lightly polishing, and trying to scrub down the weight: https://imgur.com/a/L9L09

Outside of the visual blemished the weight is well machined and fits perfectly. I like the added weight to my Orion, now it's a very similar weight to my LZ CLS and Jane prototype. I intend to have the weight refinished at some point and potentially engraved. Thank you for organizing this GB Merlin, I look forward to seeing a GB (or whatever you are planning) for a Viper V2 weight soon!
Title: Re: [GB] Duck Orion/Black Bird Weight Insert (Invoicing/Shipping)

Viper weights will be better, and as I said I'm planning on purchasing them all beforehand and then selling so people aren't waiting for their weights as long with their money is in my hand. Rest assured that I'm not going with this machine shop again. Ever. As it stands now, the cheapest US based machine shop is charging $170 for a polished brass (mirror finish) engraved weight viper. Take out the mirror finish and the cost is a lot more reasonable. There's a good chance the viper weight will be made outside the United States.

As to what can help with your weights, orbital buffer + polishing compound does wonders. But expect it to tarnish very quickly again. I'm unsure as to what caused those marks but those little marks all over in your photos I did not notice when they shipped. I apologize that it didn't meet your expectation.

You've been the most critical of this GB out of everyone here, and you have every right to be! But I assure you no one is more disappointed than me, and I don't even have a black bird lol.  But despite your reservations, you've still readily given me your money so maybe my scam worked better than expected.

Well there was a layer of 'dust' and an imprint of the bubble wrap which all wiped off relatively easily. The marks in my photos appear to be stains? Not really sure.

I offer criticism not to discourage you or tarnish your reputation, but to provide *hopefully* constructive feedback for future GBs. As stated before the cost isn't really my concern, I care primarily about the final product. At the end of the day the look of the weight is somewhat meaningless since it just chills inside my keyboard, only seen when I have to take the board apart to replace a switch or something.

I would be happy to pay a premium price for a perfectly finished weight.

Mine came in and fits perfectly inside the Blackbird, although it did have some dust and **** on it but that all cleaned up easily and overall the weight looks awesome!  I was one of the few who got stainless steel and un-engraved with the intention of having it engraved on my own as I wasn't completely sold on any of the engravings, but I may just leave it as it looks very nice and clean currently.  Thanks again to Merlin for running the GB, would definitely buy again!

I actually expect that most people who go for the un-engraved version....don't ever do engraving even if they planned on doing it

Got my weight, it's great! Mine has the same marks HappyCatFish mentioned but I don't mind.

Thanks for running this buy!

Finally got around to installing my weight (https://shados.net/files/kb/gilt_blackbird/weight.jpg) today.

Mirror finish is decent, does have some minor discolorations but they're only really visible under direct light, and I suspect they'd polish out pretty trivially. I don't think it's enough of an issue to bother :). Here (https://shados.net/files/kb/gilt_blackbird/weight_plate_compare.jpg) it's side-by-side with my (grossly incandescent) gold-plated plate.
