Been working on this since I saw Isle of Dogs last month. I absolutely loved the typography and wanted to use the typeface and colors in a set.
The type uses Lineto's Brown in Bold Italic just like the film and alphas also include hiragana characters. Many SP produced keycaps use their very large text but I've always been a fan of smaller, more minimal type. It's my first time designing a keycap set so feedback and advice is appreciated! Would be so cool to make this real.

Also noting I have the font licensed from Lineto, and my design doesn't infringe on any copyrights (no images or assets from the film, colors are not exact).

Looks crisp! Kind of looks like my High Contrast Dolch from SP, but I like that the modifier legends aren't black. The Red Japanese font also complements the color scheme of the board very well.

I love the font, but you are all over the place with your modifiers. You have icon tab and backspace, text shift, and text + icon enter. I would choose one of those style and keep it consistent throughout.

That font is really nice, but agreed on the modifiers. I'd love options of all text/all icon mods.

As far as I can tell, this would need to have either reverse dye sub modifiers, new double shot moulds and pad printed secondary legends for the alphas, or a mixture of pbt alphas and abs modifiers. This would be ambitious, expensive or undesirable, respectively.

Holy moly. Now I found my first DSA set. And yes, please adjust the modifiers. Overall, great stuff  :thumb:

Reverse dye sub should be possible. Look at DSA Starry Night, that has some super high quality reverse dye sub.

I think you need to decide on one mod style. I like the alphas but I think both legends need to be larger. They're so tiny

That's true, the novelties in starry night are pretty next level and it would be cool to this done through a manufacturer with similar dye-sub skills.

It also seems doing new moulds on SP's DSA isn't quite as bad as I'd thought—that weird 2077 keyset on massdrop wasn't so expensive at lowish MOQs. The secondary legends would still need to be pad printed separately, though.

Not a fan of the sublegends. I would be very into this with Monolegends as an option.

The numrow is especially cluttered with up to 4 legends on some keys.

Changed all the modifiers to text and made them all visually consistent, really digging the clean look of all type. Typography was such a huge part of the film so it didn't make sense to have symbols. Thanks everyone who suggested it.

Looks much better with the all-text legends IMO.

And as has been mentioned I think you'd be better off contacting the Chinese company (companies?) that does reverse dye-sub rather than trying to figure out how to stick with SP since it'd either be expensive and eh (full set of custom legends if going ABS and even then needing pad-printing) or weird (ABS mod/PBT alpha mix).

I'll definitely look more into manufacturing options if this design gains enough interest! I knew it probably would've been expensive to produce when designing it, but really wanted to make something that wasn't just a recolor with reused legend styles. For now it's just a dream.. Thanks for the guidance though, Chinese manufacturing might be the only realistic option here.

Definitely interested. It looks original and cool.

Not looking to support hhkb, but looking into an ergo kit (to work with many types of ergo style keyboards), will have to do some research on those since I don't know much about them. If you have any resources I can check out let me know!

The ones I'm familiar with are ergodox and atreus/Planck based.

Ergodox info: https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=71247.0

Atreus/ZenKeyboard/OrthoSplit/Let's split: You will need to add ortholinear keyboard keycaps for the modifiers. See zen keyboard.

Looks like I'll need alphas, base mods, numpad, ortho, 40%, tsangan, ergo, ISO, and space bars so I have some work to do this weekend. HHKB are topre switches afaik, are you referring to custom mx HHKBs or just the layout?

Pretty sure it's the layout. Most people who want custom caps on topre have modded their hhkb stems to mx ones. We are not asking for topre keycaps, only mx ones.

Yeah, when people ask for HHKB support they largely mean the style of layout since it's become fairly popular to use on custom MX boards.  Though with the easily accessible topre-to-mx sliders around, it also refers to the HHKB itself too other than the spacebar.

MX HHKBs

1.5x mods, split backspace, split right shift, and maybe a 6u spacebar

vitally important layout to support

Yup, all my new 60% and larger boards either support split backspace and split right shift or don't get bought. Larger ones are WKL as well.

A 7u spacebar would be great. I guess Tsangan contains 1.5u mods so maybe add it to the same kit to make it partly a WKL kit?

Received word from Signature Plastics, everything will need to be pad printed to maintain detail. Will be receiving some samples to check out the quality, and to see if a clear coat is necessary. Also modifying some of the kits for viability. Still looking into other manufacturing/partner options!

Edit: Partnering with zFrontier now!

Is there a reason laser filled/ablation (https://deskthority.net/wiki/Keycap_printing#Ablation) isn't possible? It might work better than pad printing, which is generally gross.

This set is a definite yes from me. The only thing I'll say is there have to be some novelties even if they suck and are awkward novelties make the set
Look at sa Kobayashi. I understand the worry but it really is unwarranted especially if you don't just say ISLE OF DOGS everywhere.

The manufacturering technique being used has some of the most impressive novelty potential and I hate seeing it wasted

What about the kanji for dog and island, per the movie title, for novelties or mods? There's likely a decent Japanese typeface that would match the English pretty well, and it would still be "text."

I don't plan on adding a novelties kit, the design was always about the typography. I've explored some text based ones but ultimately scrapped them for clashing with the minimal, uniform aesthetic. I am working on a single dog face novelty that will be included in the mods though.

If you click Notify on top, you will get an email every time someone responds. I'm sure Kema will post something when the groupbuy opens up.

As for how long, group buys usually take 3+ months.

I'm brand new to custom keysets but I LOVE this kit and want to make absolutely sure I get in when it goes up  :-*. How can I get notified via GH/Massdrop, and what's the time frame for this sort of thing usually like?
Notify button sends you emails. And just as you replied the forum added this topic to a list that gets listed in the "Show new replies to your posts" view when there are new replies. It is in the header under the GH logo.

I often miss emails so I just reply to the threads I want to follow.

Depending on the custom colors and novelties of a keyset the timeframe could be 4-12 months after GB phase begins, sometimes even longer if the set is super customized and has loads of QA. Some keysets spend years in IC phase too.

Hey all, samples seem to be a bit delayed, really not sure if i'll get them this week or the next, will pester them again. What I do know is that the GB will run for 1 month and should ship out 4-5 months after GB ends, so EOY 2018 if things go super smooth and early 2019 if not!

Update: Keyreative currently super backed up, no exact eta on when the samples will be finished, but theyre working on it!

Sample shots are in!

Notes:
Alphas look perfect color/positioning wise
Yellow modifier text needs work, looks too dull here
Red keys need to be darker, more red. Almost looks orange-red here

looks fantastic so far, loving the alphas, keep it the way it is. I agree with the yellows, it could be a bit brighter but maybe that's because how small the texts are? As for the red, yes, moar red!!!

I wonder how this set would look on champagne M65-A  ^-^

Yeah it’s probably an optical effect from tiny yellow forms surrounded by black. I’ll take a closer look and figure something out when I get my hands on the samples!

It seems keyreative might be abandoning DSA in favour of the new KAM profile for their future projects, unless I'm misinterpreting the zfrontier post that was linked in the starry nights r2 update (http://zfrontier.com/post/detail/7214).

Does anyone know more about this and whether it would apply to this set?

In the email they sent Starry Night GB participants they also said:

This will not affect DSA Mystery Group Buy and future Keyreative DSA products.
Keyreative will maintain it's DSA line along with the new KAM line.

Ah, thanks. I'd missed that, and was wondering about the line "as this profile will replace DSA profile in our lineups" from the zfrontier post.

Was sort of hoping it might, tbh. Looks like I'd find it to be an improvement to some of the aspects of DSA (texture, shape, thickness) that I'm not so fond of.

Ooh very cool, thanks for sharing that. I did have smooth tops in mind when designing the Inu keyset, will see if KAM could be a possibility for this set or my next one!

Edit: So KAM profile for this set is a possibility, but will delay things by around 2 months. I'm going to wait to get the DSA samples before deciding anything. What are your thoughts on KAM vs DSA for the Inu keyset?

I think the hiragana looked great in the renders but turned out a little too thick in the samples. I think they need to be slightly thinner to not look like one mushy blob

Just got the samples from zFrontier and overall things are looking great! The surface is actually very lightly textured and same as the sides (feels completely smooth to the touch), no complaints there.
Because I'm happy with the surface quality, I'll be sticking with DSA for this set to keep things moving, but will definitely look into KAM profile for future projects!

– I missed the apostrophe character when prepping my .ai file, fixed that already.

– Esc and Enter keys are basically bright orange-red... need those to match the hiragana legends' red and we're gucci, it'll really make a huge difference.

– The yellow is seeming dull in the modifiers is because the text is rendering too thinly, same goes for the esc and enter keys. Also need to push the color slightly warmer to match the design.

– Alpha black legends are slightly too thick, red legends are spot on though.

– Also oddly enough, the function keys and space bar are a different white than the alphas. Will get those matched up.

I think the hiragana looked great in the renders but turned out a little too thick in the samples. I think they need to be slightly thinner to not look like one mushy blob

I actually made them slightly thicker in my designs to match the stroke of the black letters, they look pretty good to me in person. Maybe the sample photos from zFrontier were a tad fuzzy.

ScrambledEggz of zFrontier has suggested going with KAM profile after trying out the new KAT profile for awhile and I'm up for that change. Better quality, smooth tops, and homing keys (which Keyreative DSA  lacks). Downside is GB will be pushed back by 1-2 months. But at this point it seems like Keyreative is backed up with other sets and we might have needed to wait that long anyways.

Will still be PBT, KAM just happens to be the first PBT keycaps to have smooth surfaces!

Changing from DSA definitely removes the option to customize/mix which sucks, but KAM is closer to the original vision and better quality overall - also homing keys are pretty huge for usability.
Title: Re: [IC] KAM Inu (MbK x zFrontier)

My main concern is that Zfrontier has been trying to push many GBs to use KAM because it is their own profile but they're claims of better quality as unsubstantiated. Especially with a keyset like this one with very intricate designs, who knows how it's going to turn out.

As someone who uses DSA extensively, lack of a honing key had never been an issue. Also, KAM is 1mm taller, making the keys look lanky.

KAM is uniform so mixing should be fine I thought. KAT, however, is not uniform

I totally get that concern, I haven't handled any KAM samples but I'm hoping the claims are true and look forward to seeing how any new samples turn out. The larger top surface, thicker walls, and tighter spacing between keys are pretty attractive on paper. I don't see why the dyesub quality/detail would be any different since it's still the same manufacturer.

Yeah KAM is uniform, I meant mixing alphas/modifiers with other DSA sets which would look a bit odd with the height difference.

AFAIK it's the manufacturer Keyreative, rather than ZF, who want to change to KAM profile. The main reason they stated on Chinese site is that their supplier of blank keycaps has quality issue with colored keys. Before KAM/KAT, Keyreative only dye-sub DSA keys, but this time they are going to get their own mold for KAM/KAT keycaps.

As for KAM profile, it's a uniform, slightly higher than DSA, larger surface and gloss surface profile. I have asked about difference with XDA but they told me they don't have XDA caps for comparison.

I'm wondering if you've gotten any more updates from ZF. I'm in for Starry Night R2 and the latest I've heard is that three weeks ago they were still working on fixing some issues with the spacebar -- it seems like that's backing all the sets up. They said they'd post an update, but their project updates page hasn't changed since Black Friday. Given that the original shipping date was May I'm fearing it's still going to be a while more. Maybe you've heard more?

Hey kema, I think some stuff are odd in the ergo set.

For the center columns there are 3 white  vertical 2u and 1 black (fn).
I'm not sure how the horizontal 1.5u are supposed to fit some are white some are black.
There are no 1u for the bottom row beside the arrow keys and 2 blanks, are you supposed to get the ortho kit along with the ergo kit ?

It would be nice to have consistent colour patterns across vertical and horizontal ergo keys. Black outer columns would be awesome on my future Boardwalk

A colevrak kit would be awesome and could help gain popularity in GB (susuwatari colevrak got 10% rate of order).
It would need scooped T, U, N, H to cover a wide range of alternative layouts.

Truth be told I don't have much understanding of ergo kits and just referenced other sets, if you know what goes into a standard ergo keyset could you assist me with that? I can shoot you a pm with my discord!

Most of the kit are featuring the secondary colour from the keyset, sometime with additionnal keys for colour accent or text label.
The bare minimun is 12 * 1.5u (4 vertical, 8 horisontal) 4 vertical 2u for thumbs, 20 * 1u.

I think you could pick between two common approach :

Mod keys with labels

Not the easiest way as a lot of ergo users are heavily customizing their keymaps to their needs.
The defaut layout in QMK is the default Ergodox EZ (https://camo.githubusercontent.com/7422b16317f9674c83448763a2f5e24a1f9e7955/68747470733a2f2f692e696d6775722e636f6d2f426535336a48372e706e67) one.

Some keycaps creators are trying to provide some labeled keys with usually several options.
Examples: dsa miami (https://massdrop-s3.imgix.net/product-images/massdrop-x-k-bares-miami-dolch-dsa-custom-keycaps/Ergodox%20Kit_20170430181726.jpg), dsa light cycle, dsa granite (https://cdn10.bigcommerce.com/s-ktpi93fl/product_images/attribute_rule_images/632_zoom_1506970054.png), Nautilus (https://i.imgur.com/SlMxnKE.png) (lot of options there)

Some provide labeled keys with thematic text unrelated to key function:
Examples: mt3 godspeed (https://massdrop-s3.imgix.net/product-images/massdrop-x-mito-mt3-godspeed-custom-keycap-set/FP/7knC1JcVQTWvfV6boBai_7%20-%20apollo%20ergo.jpg), kam wraith (https://i.imgur.com/9PnLq81.jpg), etc.

Blank keycaps

Obviously the main choice here.
Examples: Mt3 Susuwatri (https://massdrop-s3.imgix.net/product-images/massdrop-x-matt3o-mt3-susuwatari-custom-keycap-set/FP/bnMlXyKPTdejsrGbEw2g_ergodox-01.jpg) (simple kit with a few colour accent option), dsa royal navy (https://assets.bigcartel.com/product_images/213617308/3456+G2G.jpg?auto=format&fit=max&h=1000&w=1000) (minimalist kit), SA Vilebloom (https://assets.bigcartel.com/product_images/217414366/05_Ortho-06_Ergo.jpg?auto=format&fit=max&w=2000), gmk terminal (https://geekhack.org/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=85838.0;attach=156954;image)

As I'm not a designer I couldn't help you further, I guess you'll have to pick a solution.
My advice if you stick to labeled keys, keep colour pattern consistent and offer a few key variations.

Awesome, thanks so much tanega!
I'll revise the ergo kit and take everything you wrote and referenced into account when the set moves forward a bit, been really busy with work and other side projects.

My guess is that the hiatus is more because the designer is busy than because there are issues with the KAM profile, but hopefully we'll get an update eventually.

It's because Zfrontier is taking forever making KAM keycaps for other GBs

I watched Isle of Dogs too and fell in love with the entirety of it, so I wholeheartedly support this! Good luck!

Hi friends, still haven't heard anything from zFrontier but will definitely update once I do, just reached out to my contact for an update. Been focusing on graphic design stuff lately and doing some mechanical keyboard inspired posters too (can check out my signature links for that)!

Interesting. Bumping the thread for anyone subscribed like me, keeping the dream alive. At least Starry Night appears to finally be finishing soon.

Hopefully will hear back from zFrontier when that time comes, afaik this set is next in line! Revisited the set recently and bumped up the alphas in size since they were getting lost amongst all the other same sized legends. It's been so long I'll probably do another pass over everything, and revisit the box design. I appreciate the continued interest!

I actually think the size of the legends in the current renders are perfect, but I'm personally a sucker for small-ish type styles. Just my opinion.

I love small type as well, but when handling the DSA samples, the letters just felt too small so I bumped them up by ~30% (still much smaller than what you'd see on other keycaps). I feel like there should be some size difference between the alphas and modifier text.

Any timescale as to when this might go up for GB? I am keen. Would also be great to see updated renders of the new font eventually

Man zFrontier is just the worst. I'm still waiting for a set of keycaps ordered in March 2018. I really should've just filed a chargeback and moved on.

Have you considered working with KBDfans or another vendor instead?

I have no idea! All I know is this set is next in line after Starry Night, and the manufacturer has had issues with the molds or something which has led to a lot of delays. Will fix up some new renders when I know more about GB timeline.

Damn that's crazy, over a year! Haven't considered other vendors, but I know this set is next in line for production.
