Introduction

Better were the days when mastery of seas came not from bargains struck with eldritch creatures, but from the sweat of a man's brow and the strength of his back alone. You all know this to be true. Gentlemen. Ladies.

Hi everyone! Quick introduction. So I'm Chad and I'm the artisan behind KeyLabs Keycaps that I run with my pal Andrew. We're still a little new, and I spend a lot of time lurking, but I've had this keyset idea floating around my mind for a good while and really wanted to take a solid shot at the design. So I present to you, respectfully, the humble beginnings of GMK Hammerhead.

I want this set to evoke the feel of chilled, oceanic spray against your cheeks and the roll of deep blue-grey swells under a stormy sky. To spring forth the cry of gulls, heard over the ship's billowing sails, while your fellow sailors throw dice and spin tales of the great monsters of the deep and of loved ones from home. Surging white caps and cold, uncharted northern waters await. All of this splendor packed mysteriously into a GMK set.

Or something along those lines. I'm not a novelist.
 

Latest Update (5.9.20)

Based on the Euro poll feedback, we have decided by a large majority to run with the Euro Dark kit, as it currently stands. If we see a large boost in interest for a light version of Euro nearing the GB it could be added, but that interest is yet to be seen.

A light alpha version of the base kit will also be running simultaneously with the dark alpha group buy.

Current projection for the group buy date is Summer 2020.

The Fn row is reversed compared to "traditional" coloring. F1-F4, F9-F12 is traditionally the alpha colorway, and F5-F8 and the nav keys are the mod colorway.

Just adding that bc I feel it'd look better with the normal styling

For the F-row from F1 to Pause, Iíd personally prefer grey/blue/grey/blue (aka traditional hiney said) as opposed to blue/grey/blue/grey (like you have mocked up now) but thatís not a dealbreaker for me necessarily.

Thats a fair point. I'll work on playing with the F-row and seeing how it looks. I could always include the alternative scheme (shown in the renders) in a kit possibly. And I had considered the WASD issue as well and put the alpha colored ones in the base kit, they're just placed below. Thanks for the input! Really appreciate it.

Yep thatís certainly an option, but could get pricey including both is all.

I'll join if there is an ergo-plank kit like what GMK Royal Navy R2 or GMK Space Cadet did. Don't be like GMK Carbon R2 expecting people to pay $270 for the minimun necessary to cover a 40% board. :)

Gave it the ol switcheroo. I do like this a bit better. The design has some more natural flow to it.

The alphas are more of a very subtle-light steel blue/grey color. I feel as though it ties in with the oceanic "master and commander with a bit of an edge" feel I was hoping for. But always interested in hearing more thoughts about it.

Actually, White is one of the 1st colors I think of when being on the water. Marine coolers, boat hulls, cushions so many aspects of boating and fishing are directly tied to a nice clean white.

 I know you are still actively iterating on the design, but are these going to be all custom colors? If so, it would be helpful to see matching Pantone or RAL colors.  If there is one thing that recent group buys have taught me, it is that getting these gray/blue/green colors right is difficult.

Yeah the default WASD is absolutely part of the base kit, it is a bit hidden though so no worries. I'm a bit selfish and really love the mod color WASD and wanted to throw it in the base kit.

As far as Pantone colors go, I'm talking with GMK right now about pricing for the kits. I sent them the Pantone versions so I will go ahead and add the pantone colors to this post when I have a minute.

If I'm not mistaken, your base kit supports Ortho layouts right out of the box.  This gets a +1 from me and I hope other designers follow your lead!  It really doesn't take much extra to have basic Ortho support and many of those 1u keys are used by other unique layouts too.  The only modification I would make to support my preferred ortho layout would be the addition of an R3 1u colon in mod colors.  You have enough R3 to support the Ortho layout, but I usually prefer to use the mod-colored colon which is what is often included with separate Ortho kits.

Although I do like Oblivion, the pretty different feel of the set maybe caters to a different audience. I believe it is going to be launched on massdrop as the single source. I wish them the best of luck with their launch, very well designed kit.

Have you considered "fancy" number pad legends, like what is on GMK Minimal, instead of the standard ones? I feel like it gives that part of the keyboard a more refined look.

So realistically they should be a little closer to the top renders. The artist said in his experience the lighting he used is practically more realistic to the final product, but of course, they are digital renders based on pantone colors, which appear differently on different mediums so there is always some flux. I'm waiting on pantone chips soon, so hopefully that will help, but we'll see.

Thanks! I agree that this is definitely a long ways away from being an accurate comparison, but regardless I am always a fan of mixing up different sets, and think that these two could mesh together in some really interesting ways!

You know, I had seriously considered this earlier on. But from my perspective, I do love the original alphas and there are just a lot of sets that have the dark/cyan/teal combo already that I really wanted to try and do something a little different. Hopefully that makes some sense, I'm still putting some thought into it though as we continue moving forward.

Edit 2: also accent spacebars in base kit with alpha color spacebars in the separate kit .... no. I love this colorway but I'm not paying $300+ to get a sane, normal, standard kit that includes a ton of caps I don't need. This didn't work for DMG and it shouldn't work here almost on principle.

I wan to express the similar opinions as thee ones above.

it seems like a needless huge base kit and drives up cost. Especially now that we are seeing sets priced at the $125-135 at the MOQ of 500.

Another odd choice I see is that this is being self run instead of going with an established vendor, at least in the US. This might dissuade people from joining as they might not be familiar with KeyLabs.

These are absolutely valid concerns to be sure, and Iíll be taking a look at what I can do over the next two weeks or so to bring  down the costs a little. It looks right now that the set will debut right around $150 for the core and hopefully a little less in the US at 250 units and then going down at 500, 1000 etc. ideally if the set reaches 500 the price point should be right around 140 or a little less for the US.

What I can say for sure right now, is that Iím working to offer a complete alternative core set featuring the alternative alphas. This way, those interested in just the alt alphas have the option of picking up a set featuring those for a lot less than is currently possible. Iíll see what else I can finagle with the pricing.

Thanks for the work putting together those kit suggestions, Iíll look at them a little more closely when I have a minute (currently traveling the next few days) I just wanted to mention that Iím taking the feedback in stride.

Lastly, I know it's nice to cater to the Euro folks, but what's the reasoning for not offering the minimum ISO compat in the base kit? Even the big name Europeans like Oblotzky and Zambumon don't have their separate ISO kits reach MOQ. When that kit doesn't make MOQ, you'll likely lose those folks from your base kit too. So I had actually thought quite a bit about the additional MOQ while working on the separate Deep Water base kit. The only reason I chose this route is that it has no additional MOQ requirement and acts as a child kit when replacing the alt alphas. Since the mods are identical to the main, the MOQ is 100 for the kit. So ideally this secondary kit will better provide to the audience that wants to exclusively rock the alt alphas while offereing them a lower price by quite a lot without raising MOQ requirements.

I appreciate the feedback for sure, itís difficult to make the decision what to add into the kit however, at this point projections are looking good across the board as far as reaching MOQ on the ISO kit.

Just saw the new update Deep Water kit, this is a very nice touch as suggested by others. IMO i actually like this a lot more over the original design, especially seeing how the official GMK renders turn out.
Would definitely love to get the Deep Water kit + Novelties, ideally would be nice to have it price around 40 if possible as most are around that price point such as GMK Laser.

Thanks for the kind words! I appreciate it, just to give you a little bit of an idea, the novelty kit will be priced a little higher than those kits due to the fact that the kit is large and includes quite a bit of caps requiring custom molds

Others have more experience watching this community than I do. That said, I worry splitting to two high price base kits when you're going to overlap with GMK Oblivion round 2 (with leaner kits and price drops) is how MOQ isn't reached on either. I hope I'm wrong, I like this set.

And now it appears that GMK Olive will also be in June.

I have to agree with IOVERCALLHISTIOCYTES above. You may just be splitting your audience, and thus your numbers. Just one base kit streamlines everyone into 1 kit, which will allow for a much easier time hitting MOQ. Perhaps offer the alternative alpha set during RD2 of GMK Hammerhead?

Lastly, I know it's nice to cater to the Euro folks, but what's the reasoning for not offering the minimum ISO compat in the base kit? Even the big name Europeans like Oblotzky and Zambumon don't have their separate ISO kits reach MOQ. When that kit doesn't make MOQ, you'll likely lose those folks from your base kit too. Trying to provide some constructive feedback; that is all. Good luck  :thumb:

I appreciate the feedback for sure, itís difficult to make the decision what to add into the kit however, at this point projections are looking good across the board as far as reaching MOQ on the ISO kit.

Glad to hear that MOQ is only 100 for the Deepwater base kit. Hope you have much success. It is one of the more beautiful sets for sure.

Sounds like you've thought it through. That's an interesting strategy with the second base kit.  I wonder if SkIIdata would have gotten the orange mods set through with an increased base price but only MOQ of 100. I'd have paid 170 for that kit (and did pay for base and bars) but couldn't quite justify the 250$ for base plus orange mods.

Hammerhead is one of my favorite novelties sets of all time, I'm ready to help.

Probably way too late for this, but the accent arrows and WASD keys are really not necessary in a base kit and probably drive up price quite a bit. This is like the bad old days of GMK group buys and I don't think anyone misses that. Have you considered moving these into a separate kit?

Edit: This might have a hard time with MOQ at this price and size given how many kits are running right now. I'd be more inclined to buy if it were smaller and cheaper.

Edit 2: also accent spacebars in base kit with alpha color spacebars in the separate kit .... no. I love this colorway but I'm not paying $300+ to get a sane, normal, standard kit that includes a ton of caps I don't need. This didn't work for DMG and it shouldn't work here almost on principle.

I agree with this, I feel like there is too much cross contamination of kits going on. How about simplifying things to something like this?

These are absolutely valid concerns to be sure, and Iíll be taking a look at what I can do over the next two weeks or so to bring  down the costs a little. It looks right now that the set will debut right around $150 for the core and hopefully a little less in the US at 250 units and then going down at 500, 1000 etc. ideally if the set reaches 500 the price point should be right around 140 or a little less for the US.

What I can say for sure right now, is that Iím working to offer a complete alternative core set featuring the alternative alphas. This way, those interested in just the alt alphas have the option of picking up a set featuring those for a lot less than is currently possible. Iíll see what else I can finagle with the pricing.

Thanks for the work putting together those kit suggestions, Iíll look at them a little more closely when I have a minute (currently traveling the next few days) I just wanted to mention that Iím taking the feedback in stride.

I second these kit recommendations. You will be competing with two very hype sets, one of which has a lot of kits and will be sucking a lot from peoples wallets. It's worth getting it right so that at least the base kit makes MOQ.

I can absolutely see where you're coming from. And although I personally love the OG core, I could tell that a lot of people were in the same boat. Which is totally fine, each version caters to a slightly different flavor profile but still holds strong to the theme. The fact that GMK gave us 100 MOQ on the set is what I'm excited about.

I was hoping for this kinda kit. Love the deep water kit but since Iím an ISO DE user and already asked if there is a possibility to get the alternative colors as an EURO kit. I could see this set doing well with your kit structure, but tbh I don't think it'll work with the original structure.

I can confirm that the gamer WASD  keys have been scrapped, alpha colored spacebars have been added to the core and deep water kits and teal spacebars have been added to the spacebar kit and some other minor substitutions have been made. With those changes, Iím pretty happy with the results. The nice thing is Iím able to keep the larger kit while still being very close if not the same price range as smaller kits due to the fact Iím acting as the designer and using our store as the main vendor. Even with this size weíre looking  at close to or at $140 for the US purchases of the main kits

Yes the keys you are referring to are not supposed to be the alpha color, that was actually a mistake.

Iíll contact GMK again and double check that those are changed in the final renders
.

Edit: Those keys are included in the kit, they however are below and not in the main portion, Iíll see if I can have them switched.

(This is a good change, I did feel that they were unnecessary.)

ISO enter in base kit is standard mod colour, whereas the one in child kit is accented.

$140 really isn't that high for a GMK base kit with this much compat imo - I'm very glad to have ISO UK support in the base kit, which is something that's constantly cut out nowadays. The way this base kit is done is against the current trend, but personally I prefer it this way.

That said, I agree that the main post should be kept up to date with the current plan - I presume renders for that are in the works.

Renders are provided officially by GMK. I unfortunately am at the whim of their design team as they are quite busy in  their availability to work on renders. Right now,  I work with what I can to to post to this thread to keep people updated who routinely check back on discussion and are curious about the last changes, but I will update the kits in full the second I get the renders.

I don't think anyone is asking for it to be removed. But with so many sets running at $120 it gets hard to swallow a $140 base kit with some oddball color choices (which seem to be resolved now).

My biggest disapointment is that it seems in order to replicate the same color setup that has been in every single render posted so far, not only would I need to buy a second alpha set, I need to buy duplicates of every single mod as well, and maybe the sapcebar addon, too. It's not clear to me if the teal spacebar is in the base kit or not.

I wouldn't mind needing to buy just the teal alphas, I get that not everyone wants off color WASD. however, needing to buy a duplicate base kit (that is already IMO too expensive) is too much.

My biggest disapointment is that it seems in order to replicate the same color setup that has been in every single render posted so far, not only would I need to buy a second alpha set, I need to buy duplicates of every single mod as well, and maybe the sapcebar addon, too. It's not clear to me if the teal spacebar is in the base kit or not.

I wouldn't mind needing to buy just the teal alphas, I get that not everyone wants off color WASD. however, needing to buy a duplicate base kit (that is already IMO too expensive) is too much.

Frankly this is what IC polls are supposed to be for -- to gauge interest for different kit elements.

That said, yes, $140 isn't bad at all for a base kit. But it was lacking what most people would consider a "normal" layout. You have a very specific and unusual set in mind; that should cost extra. Everyone else wanting a regular damn keyset shouldn't be paying that $280 just so you can have your specific preference met.

After thinking about this some more, if adding those "normal layout keys" (without taking out the various unusual keys) brings it up to $150 or $160, that's fine with me as well -- that's still on par with "big" sets like DMG and Terminal R2, and it's still quite a bit cheaper for the typical buyer.

Are you referring to the RAMA board renders? Each of those was commissioned to represent a single base kit and possibly a novelty set if thatís something youíre interested in. The WASD wasn't popular enough to merit its existence, and although I like it, there has been quite a bit of feedback in the forms suggesting it won't be used in most cases.

Agreed, it would make more sense to move the rare/split/accent spacebars to the spacebar kit and put the 6.25u and 7u bars with with their respective alpha kits. Also probably worth considering removing that mod colored Esc from the novelties and adding it to each of the kits so if you just want the mods to match you don't need to get the novelties for just one key. Also, why have a 536C spacebar in the deep water kit?

Rushing into GB? Go back and look when this was initially posted...November of last year.

I do think the 7u should be exchanged for the 6u spacebar, but besides that, everything else looks good!

Keeping 2 base sets is fine. This isn't a hobby where you should be expected to buy everything. Hell, there was 10 sets in April alone and this year's showing no signs of slowing down. There's what...4-6 more sets planned for June alone? Delaying anything isn't a solution. Not buying everything is going to be your best solution.

All of my thoughts are based off my knowledge and experience running many GBs.

Few things that I think are hurting this set.

1. Two base kits. Both of these kits will need to hit 250 MOQ *each*. So by making two separate kits, you are hurting yourself by competing with your own set, with your own set. If you really want different alphas, just offer them as a stand alone kit as an add on. It has been brought to my attention that the second base kit only has a 100 MOQ.

2. No 7u spacebar in base, but you have the 1.5u mods that are meant to be used with 7u bottom row. And even more strange, the 6u off centered spacebar was chosen over the 7u, which is basically the second most popular spacebar needed. And even *more* strange is that you only have the accent off centered 6u spacebar in the base and the alphas colored one is in the spacebar kit. Also i believe your split spacebars should be the colors of the main alphas, not the alternate colored ones. But again, this is just showing that having two base kits will possibly hurt everything.

3. You don't have a mod colored Esc key in your base kit. Which is standard. People have to buy the *huge* novelty kit, just to get something that is usually standard. You should swap the Esc keys.

4. Your novelty kit is huge. I don't understand why there are four different skull caps when the set is about the shark. I would suggest narrowing this set down by a lot, in order to avoid it being so expensive that a lot of people back out of buying it, on top of the already huge Base kit.

So basically if someone wants to put this set on their 7u bottom row board with normal color placement, they will have to buy the base, the spacebar for the 7u and then the novelties for the esc key. So they will be spending an outrageous amount of money just to get what every base kit usually has in the base.

And all of this on top of running at the same time as juggernauts, Oblivion and Olive. You need every advantage you can get to compete. And all of these things are doing the opposite.

I like this set a lot and would like to see if succeed. I hope some of this may have helped.

1: 40% and ortho in base? That does not make a lot of sense to me, and I use both. Split those into a separate kit.


2: No 7u spacebar in base. That is a dealbreaker.


3: accent esc is in the novelties. No.


I am not gonna say most of what else I want to say, because Dixie already said it.


The base kit is both bloated and morbidly thin. It's missing the basics, while including so many unneeded keys. It makes no sense.

I really like the color way of set so I would really like to see it succeed.

I like this set a lot as well, but as it stands now I would not join. If all of the points Dixie made are addressed then I would. One personal thing I'd like to suggest is Numpad sub legends be removed for a cleaner look, but this would not stop me from getting the kit assuming all other issues were addressed. Either way, I hope to see this do well  :thumb:

Because the final kits pending for GB have never been published up until like a few weeks ago. It was out of sudden that the IC was moving towards GB. People were giving inputs because they wanted to support the GB's runner and see another successful GB. Everything is said out of goodwill and I don't think anyone means any harm/attack towards the GB's runner. Garrett is a very well respected veteran of the community. If someone like Garrett drafts out a long, thoughtful suggestion on any IC of mine, I would be damn sure to read twice every single word they have to offer.

I hate beating on a dead horse, but a reconsideration of kits offering might not be a terrible idea. Garrett pretty much nailed everything in the coffin. I want to join, but I personally would love to see some cleanups from the novelties kit and the 7U spacebar offered in the base kit.

If the price is really as low as $140-150 WITH the 40s set in the base set, that's very attractive (especially when you consider that these are pantone colours, not gmk standard).

It seems like you're forcing everyone to buy both base + space kits, and that's not optimal.

If the price is really as low as $140-150 WITH the 40s set in the base set, that's very attractive (especially when you consider that these are pantone colours, not gmk standard).

So I usually try not stick my nose in other sets business, but I really like this set, so im going to give my two cents.

All of my thoughts are based off my knowledge and experience running many GBs.

Few things that I think are hurting this set.

1. Two base kits. Both of these kits will need to hit 250 MOQ *each*. So by making two separate kits, you are hurting yourself by competing with your own set, with your own set. If you really want different alphas, just offer them as a stand alone kit as an add on. It has been brought to my attention that the second base kit only has a 100 MOQ.

2. No 7u spacebar in base, but you have the 1.5u mods that are meant to be used with 7u bottom row. And even more strange, the 6u off centered spacebar was chosen over the 7u, which is basically the second most popular spacebar needed. And even *more* strange is that you only have the accent off centered 6u spacebar in the base and the alphas colored one is in the spacebar kit. Also i believe your split spacebars should be the colors of the main alphas, not the alternate colored ones. But again, this is just showing that having two base kits will possibly hurt everything.

3. You don't have a mod colored Esc key in your base kit. Which is standard. People have to buy the *huge* novelty kit, just to get something that is usually standard. You should swap the Esc keys.

4. Your novelty kit is huge. I don't understand why there are four different skull caps when the set is about the shark. I would suggest narrowing this set down by a lot, in order to avoid it being so expensive that a lot of people back out of buying it, on top of the already huge Base kit.

So basically if someone wants to put this set on their 7u bottom row board with normal color placement, they will have to buy the base, the spacebar for the 7u and then the novelties for the esc key. So they will be spending an outrageous amount of money just to get what every base kit usually has in the base.

And all of this on top of running at the same time as juggernauts, Oblivion and Olive. You need every advantage you can get to compete. And all of these things are doing the opposite.

I like this set a lot and would like to see if succeed. I hope some of this may have helped.

Yep totally agreed with this, i totally didnt realise there isn't a 7u spacebar. It would be extremely disappointing and also a deal breaker if the base core kit doesn't included a 7u spacebar. For so many GMK they came before this 7u spacebar is always 100% included in the base kit, the spacebar add-on kit has always been to cater towards those who needs a split spacebar aka split keyboard and as well as an alternated color option.

One last thing I noticed. You have an alpha colored and accent  enter key in the base instead of a mod colored and accent. I canít see a reason that there isnt the standard colored mod enter key. I would remove the alpha colored enter and replace with mod colored.

Yes. If I want a toned down look. I would like the option to mount my keyboard with single color modifiers keys. Forcing accent keys is usually not a good idea.

I think the Pantone colour code for the Deep Water alpha background colour is incorrect. 553 C corresponds to a completely different green colour. However all the other Pantone codes are correct. Do I get a free set for being the first to notice this mistake? /s

It flew more or less totally under the radar. Recently it got attention in different venues (Reddit and Discord) -- many people are seeing it for the first time.

I think the people commenting here likely saw it previously and ignored it instead of giving advice then. I'd bet anyone actually invested in the hobby has read every IC currently posted. :p

Because the final kits pending for GB have never been published up until like a few weeks ago. It was out of sudden that the IC was moving towards GB. People were giving inputs because they wanted to support the GB's runner and see another successful GB. Everything is said out of goodwill and I don't think anyone means any harm/attack towards the GB's runner. Garrett is a very well respected veteran of the community. If someone like Garrett drafts out a long, thoughtful suggestion on any IC of mine, I would be damn sure to read twice every single word they have to offer.

I hate beating on a dead horse, but a reconsideration of kits offering might not be a terrible idea. Garrett pretty much nailed everything in the coffin. I want to join, but I personally would love to see some cleanups from the novelties kit and the 7U spacebar offered in the base kit.

It's fair that it deserves more attention now that the GB is approaching, and the points on kit changes are valid. New critiques at the 11th hour on a 6-month IC would have me a bit miffed if I were running it. But the kit groupings are not too hard to change (as well as being good ideas), so overall not a huge deal.

Yes this is true, unfortunately I did have to make some tough calls when putting the final kits together to not drive up kits costs too much. However, if we do happen to exceed expectations I'd be happy to put together a small "stretch goal" kit of several requested keycaps to include as a thanks for the support, but of course, I don't want to get ahead of myself and we'll have to see how the GB goes.

The Deep Water kit render includes two 1.5U R2 \| keycaps in mod color.  One of those should probably be alpha color.  I appreciate that you shouldn't drop keycaps after you start sales, but whether the solution is adding another key or replacing one of those two, this would be a good one to fix.

Pantone chips are $18, hopefully Keylabs at least has those in hand. It's somewhat of a formality, and I trust Keylabs more than most with getting colors right, but it's always nice to see the color chip and not just the computer screen representation.

Yes I have ordered Pantone chips and hope to have them in soon. I'll be working with the team at GMK along the manufacturing process on colors and will ideally have Pantone chips to show during this GB. I appreciate the vote of confidence.

A mistake was made on our part, and at the time we made a logistical decision to keep as is with the options available at the time. Fortunately, we were able to resolve this particular issue with what is a better solution in our eyes and the other vendors involved with a net benefit to the end user.

The design process for this first set has admittedly been a learning process for sure, we do make mistakes and are exceptionally grateful for people to catch things that we don't and help us improve the set for everyone involved.

If this is a deal breaker, I do understand, and maybe would suggest not buying this set.

Hey there apologies for not addressing that earlier, I'm hopping between platforms answering things best I can. The spacebars as part of the Core/Deep Water kits exist in the following formats.

2 x 6.25 spacebars, one in standard GMK format matching the alphas and the other acting as an accent piece. The accent piece is an aesthetic call made for those interested in some of our earlier renders and to continue the initial theme/feel of the Hammerhead design.

1 x 7u spacebar in alpha color

1 x 6u off centered spacebar for more non traditional layouts.

For whatever color there is a 6.25U, there should be 7U of the same color included in the base kit in my opinion. Say if I want an accented navy 7U spacebar, the only way I can get that key is from buying a whole Deep Water base kit. Do you see now the problem we've been trying to communicate with you throughout the IC?

When designing this core set, trying to cater to as many layouts as possible is always on our mind. It is of course difficult to create larger kits when we do get so much feedback about the sizing and the price from people with standard TKL or likewise layouts. Some items didn't quite make the cut at our discretion and the dark blue 7u spacebar was one of those items. That being said, I would be happy to part with the 7u kit from my Deep Water kit if you're interested down the line.

I'll go ahead and reach out to them and confirm the pricing. Each regional vendor has jurisdiction over their own margins due to differences in taxes, import costs and shipping.

As far as the deskpads go, they will be US vendor specific due to the fact it is a new product and would be too expensive to ship in bulk to the EU and sell for a reasonable price currently unfortunately.

Edit: CandyKeys pricing on the novelty kit will be lowered, there had been a mistake.

Sadly the deskpads are pretty heavy once packaged and usps international shipping is a bear :(

The deskpads will be stocked in the store long term following this GB and I'll do what I can to either work out something with inventory shipped directly to a proxy to lower costs or another shipping system.

I really like the light colored kit as well, however unfortunately the last run we ran into a situation where the kits were competing with one another. And given the budget for one kit, most people selected deep water. We're collecting feedback on the interest for the OG core kit in the form, so if you have a second, answering that question would be really helpful.

Unfortunately some tough calls may need to be made, and we'll just have to see if there is enough interest to justify running both kits at once, perhaps just the light alphas, or considering running the "og core" as a different set with some different novelties later down the line.

Love that you have put ortho mods in the spacebar kit. I think this a good approach since it's just 4 keys; however, I would change up those legends. There's no consensus on Esc and Tab. They can either go on r2 or r3 - I've even seen some put a blank key for Esc on r4. Instead of having another pair of Esc and Tab, I'd consider changing them to the following:

R2: Out
R3: Data or Read

Thanks to Carbon and Pulse these molds already exist.

And they'll def. exist after Voyage runs!

PS: I'd love to see an alternate alpha set for the lighter alphas. Most GBs that have extra alphas end up going this way instead of providing a whole extra base kit.

as i wrote in the IC form and iirc it was mentioned in the original IC, would you please consider exchanging the three skull novelties with the shark fin novelty? i think it would be a far better representation of the hammerhead theme. ofc a skull may in some way be related to a shark but if we think of it that way there should also be a cut-off arm and that's not what we want, do we?  :eek:

either way i'm totally down for the 2nd try on this, no matter what! :thumb:

I think the novelties kit is too large, and lacks thematic focus.  Is this GMK Hammerhead, or GMK Yacht Club/Pirate/Hammerhead?  Some of them remind me of the Land's End catalog more than sharks.  I love the hammerhead novelty, but I doubt I'd buy a novelty kit this large just to get that.  It might be worth paring it down to just the shark fin and the hammerhead, and putting those in the base kit.

It would be helpful if the rows were labelled in the kit renders.  Is this 112344, or something else?

I'm interested in both the Deepwater and the lighter alphas, but I'll probably pass on both without an R3 PgUp and R4 PgDn.

Numpad belongs in base kit(in GMK sets at least) because:

 - Unnecessarily splitting up kits with GMK is small brain because of their process increasing kit costs and the GB process being simplified with fewer kits
 - Numpad is a relatively small number of keys and impact on overall kit pricing for those keys
 - There is a fairly large number of layouts that can potentially use those keys: Fullsize, 1800, 96key, uk78, left handed variants of anything with a built in numpad, and then just any non-numpad layout with a separate numpad
 - With a large potential percentage of buyers wanting it, having it in a separate kit raises the average paid cost for the set
 - On a set that may have a harder time reaching MOQ anyway, if a separate numpad kit doesn't hit it can cause a significant withdrawal of base kit orders, what usually happens to orders with ISO kits

Overall I think keeping the numpad in the base kit is improving QoL of the GB process and having a minimal effect on those not needing the numpad while making significant difference for those who do need it.

Love that you have put ortho mods in the spacebar kit. I think this a good approach since it's just 4 keys; however, I would change up those legends. There's no consensus on Esc and Tab. They can either go on r2 or r3 - I've even seen some put a blank key for Esc on r4. Instead of having another pair of Esc and Tab, I'd consider changing them to the following:

R2: Out
R3: Data or Read

I agree, I'd much rather have 3 'novelty' legends then 4 escape keys and 2 tab keys. Part of me would still want a second 1u shift keys for symmetry, but this is a good solution

NorDE kit is missing a few keys. It looks like its almost good for DE-layout but it is missing keys for SE/FI/DK/NO.

Since everyone here has place their interest and input i shall give my 2cents as well. Please consider removing the R1 novelties for "anchor & light house" personally imo if both of those design are already available on the modifiers/window key it just doesn't really make any sense for them to be repeated on the R1 row.

Thanks for this note, as someone who doesn't use Ortho this is pretty helpful info. It's been added to my notes for the kit for possible upcoming tweaks in the next week or two and I might add it to the questions form also.

As OP said, in the ďpreviousĒ GB, people mostly went for the dark alpha kit & the light one was unlikely to reach MOQ.
So, you *could* buy it, but it wouldnít get produced due to lack of interest anyway.

I know I personally did not join the GB for the light alphas because I didn't want to pay so much for a bunch of keys I would never use. I wonder if others were in the same situation.

1. The Tab key in the extras moved to the base kit
2. A new "light alphas" kit came back, with spacebar and numpad support

With these changes, I could effectively build 2 keyboards by buying the base and alphas kit only.

In the way you had it setup before, you forced buyers to choose between dark and light alphas, which definitely cannibalized sales as you stated in the original post. With this approach, everyone has to buy a base kit. If someone just wanted light alphas in the base kit, they would have to spend more to get the base + alphas kit. But alpha kit purchasers have the ability to build 2 full keyboards, which makes the added cost more palatable.

This was a consideration early on, but unfortunately during my discussion with my rep from GMK, they suggested that this option would be more expensive overall then the production a single unified kit.

Honestly the worst that happens is it doesnít hit MOQ. At least give the light alphas a chance. Like I know some of the commenters appear to like the dark keys. Good for you. Doesnít mean you have to prevent the light set from happening to prove your color is better. Itís called opinion.

Regarding the original core kit, a few sets have been successful lately running an alternate alphas kit, but including enough extra modifiers that you can cover 2 keyboards if you buy the alternate alphas kit. That makes it a much better value, effectively 2 GMK sets with lots of compatibility for $125 each or less.

You must not have been around for the cancelled group buy which had two different base kits. Itís the reason it failed.

Not really. The previous kits were a jumble and had big flaws. Two base kits wasn't one of them.

Just here to reiterate my interest in the Deep Water kit; I've got the money set aside for it. Also reiterating my interest in adding two 1.5u novelties to the novelty kit. I'll buy Deep Water either way though.

Also, if the name for the original light alpha core kit is still up in the air, the opposite of deep water would be the shallows, and GMK Hammerhead Shallows sounds pretty cool to me.

Not trying to be difficult, but can you please tell us the plans for this set?  We haven't had any updates in months and we just want to know where we are at.  Will it still be run?  A simple yes or no, or maybe down the road would be perfectly fine.  I'd rather be let down now, then keep checking daily to no avail.  We understand nothing is set in stone and you have other real life obligations, but some sort of update would be really appreciated.  We appreciate all of the work you have done putting into this!

I told him the same. That likely this hobby is becoming an industry and the number of GBs every month will only increase from here and not go back to what we thought we was normal a year ago.

But also, he runs that business by himself and I assume he must do the artisans as a full time job because he just doesnít have the hours to handle everythjng by himself right now.

The other thing Iím still scratching my head on is how incomplete the 40s/spacebar kit is. You would need to pick up this extra kit for the four 1u left side ortho mods. Why not just move a lot of the non-standard sizes into a 40s kit?

Technically itís a spacebar Kit that had ortho keys piggy back in to help moq for ortho.


I am really hoping for a light alphas kit because I love borhbcolorways a lot.

The problem is that the teeth are too small; on such a small symbol, they need to be exaggerated, and probably both top and bottom jaw
Also a hammerhead from a different angle is another idea to help drive the theme.

Thatís where my mind is at with this. I want to pick up the novelties with this kit, but a $60 novelty kit (making up a number here) is a tough pill to swallow. I think less overall novelties, but novelties which strengthen the core theme at a reduced cost (say $35) is definitely the way to go to help hit MOQ. I have always had the perspective with novelties that the average enthusiast picks up novelties to use like 3 or 4 of them (this is anecdotal evidence, I understand that you, dear reader, may use more).

I mostly agree with this. I'd put the majority of the r1 novelties on r4 and then the rest on r3 and r2. If nothing else, put some more 1u novelties on r4.


If I were to use any of them on my Planck, I could only use 3 of them, two of which being unique designs.  Because of that, it wouldn't make much sense to buy the kit.

Looking at the base kit, the second pair of 1u Ctrl and Alt could be dropped. I also see that 1.25u Fn, R3 PgUp, R4 PgDn are missing; could you look into adding those? The Menu could be replaced with Fn outright.
