Title: [IC] TGR Alice PCB (GB Live, Update: ARM MCU)
Post by: onefivenine on Sun, 20 January 2019, 12:56:20
Update: 03/09

Update: The designs for the PCB has been migrated to professional company that has been designing PCBs for 25+ years. It has come to my understanding that exercising business, without a legal contract and clear timelines, can be tricky. Permission to run this group buy/preorder has been approved twice. Once upon the inital 20-50 unit run and again when I realized that I needed to move the project to a full production order to fulfill the overwhelming interest and responses from the community. Honestly, after recent events, I was debating whether to cancel the group buy or not. However, I did not want to disappoint the community and break my promise to get these PCBs to you. I am limiting the quantity of the units being made to 200 to ensure fulfillment to my supporters. A second round is uncertain and will not happen unless I get another approval. Thank you guys for your support.
You may order these PCBs here: https://store.projectkeyboard.com/products/preorder-tgr-alice-pcb. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me.

Hey Everyone,

This is an interest check for a TGR Alice compatible PCB and acrylic case. Yuktsi has graciously provided the files (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=95054.msg2661499#msg2661499) and replacement pcbs will be made.

Responses to Questions/Comments submitted:

C: Wish that it included support for in-switch LED.
R: Sorry, but I would like to keep the costs low as possible for this run.

C: Anodized aluminum plates please.
R: I want us to hit the best MOQ prices. Offering too many option may reduce MOQ breaks.

C: Would prefer if it wasn't green and, shedding as much outer perimeter pcb that isn't needed.
R: I would like to keep the pcb shape as close to the original as possible. For color, if it doesn't affect the cost and majority wants a specific color we can look into it.

C: Would it be possible to add iso left shift and maybe a type of iso enter. Could be a numpad enter.
R: I would prefer not to change the original design.

C: Pls make hotswap.
R: More parts, more monies. DIY hotswap solutions are available.

C: Make it as bare bones as possible to keep costs down.
R: Yup, that is the plan.

C: If you could make an alps compatible version... omg.
R: Yes, I spoke to Maarten and he has agreed to add ALPs support to the pcb.

C: Would it be possible to just get the pcb?
R: Absolutely. You are not obligated to bundle the pcb and plate.

Correct. I am getting a personal plate made for myself and will check qc when it arrives. I would not consider it as an alternative to Puddsy's IC yet and I will be communicating with him to make sure that I am not interfering with his IC.

I am not familiar with the printed cases. This PCB will be tested and fitted only to the one from the group buy.

That has been my plan, I just finished putting together the first one today and have it all flashed in QMK, just was gonna clean up the code a bit then get it added.

Seems I got beat to the punch on the IC side of things!

I didnít make mine as a replacement pcb, Iíd need to add the 2 holes, (could easily be added) for mounting with the original case. I really wanted an Alice, but wasnít sure I would like the layout, or not having QMK, so I threw this together over the winter holidays with an acrylic case to test it out before I go throw $1k at a used Alice 😂

Great minds think alike it seems!

For this run, we would like to limit orders to 1 pcb per person. Maximum total units to about 30-40 to keep qc tight. No limit to plates though.

Puddsy just pointed me to a shop that can do clear PC. I'll set up a poll to see what people are in favor of. One off pc plates are usually pricey so check back if you don't find a spot that can't do it for a reasonable price.

ALPS support added for PCB.

Current plates are MX plates only. If you want ALPs plate option, you will need to provide file.

Also, I am likely going to run plates first. Soon.

I've developed an alps and an alps / mx hybrid plate.

Does anyone have an acrylic cutter / 3d printer?

If so, verifying the hybrid plate is compatible with mx switches, the pcb, and stabilizers would be perfect.

We can either use it, or the exclusive alps plate.

I've developed an alps and an alps / mx hybrid plate.

Does anyone have an acrylic cutter / 3d printer?

those cutouts are prone to twisting with plate mount MX switches, would not buy if they were used

LZ has used them in the past

better to have two separate plates in this case

So do I. Alps plates are supposed to be 1.2mm, not 1.5mm.

You mean "use the dedicated alps plate", right?

EDIT : ... Yes.

Anyway, dual should be fine for a proto since we don't have an alps pcb to test alignment...?

In other words, no hybrid MX/Alps cutouts - yeah. One plate dedicated for MX, one for Alps.

What about the mx / costar cutouts? They seem to have the same '+' issue, too...

And I think alps stabs are terrible...

Edit: I also worry about not getting enough folks interested for alps plates, if they are by themselves. I think five or ten would sell, tops...

There are pcb mount alps stabs?

Costar is the only hybrid stab (both mx and alps) I know... Otherwise only mx stabs (pcb clip, pcb screw)...?

If you're going to support Alps, I would do traditional plate mount cuts for the clips + wire. Avoid hybrids altogether :/

Moreso than superior, it's that most Alps users will use keycaps and stabilizers directly from the boards that they come from. e.g. SGI Granite, AEK, or Dell AT101, etc. And the problem with plate-mount Alps stabilizers is solvable. It may be slightly more tedious but it's not difficult.

I still think that dedicated plates, without hybridization on the plate(s), are the way to go if Alps support will be present.

Sigh. OK, I'll redo with alps stabs...

In either case, I need a proto to verify things are OK. Or just someone to double check things, so I'm not the only one with my head in my ass...

(I made the plate by taking the yuksti plate, taking an alps-mx cutout plus alps cutout grouped, aligned that with the original mx cutout, then removed both the mx and alps-mx.  Not sure on tolerance though...)

I've been using the dxf's from swillkb, and some copy pasting in Illustrator... Which seems to be OK enough.

If no one wants to help, I can just laser some acrylic on ponoko for $30 and see myself, but that will take a week or two for turnaround...

Welp, Alps Stabs won't offer a choice for either [split backspace / 2u backspace] or [split R shift / 2.75u R shift].

I personally like both keys split, because I put backspace on the R Thumb key...

Neither the first nor second on that picture seem feasible, since the clip wouldn't be able to, well, clip onto the plate.

Correct.  Sorry I didn't add details.

First picture is with [two 1u] and [one 2u] with alps stabs.

Second picture is [one 1.75u + 1u] and a [2.75u] with alps stabs.

Third picture is just a [2.75u] with alps stabs.

Costar stabs fix this, since they go all the way to the top of the slot.

If Costar stabs are reliable, and readily available, it would be a good option. As long as they can be compatible with original Alps keycaps from old boards.

I concur with this, once again. I'd rather not have to settle for something that requires a modification after I receive it in the mail, no matter how simple.

I'd settle on a specific, dedicated layout than accommodate for a "universal" type. The likelihood of desoldering and changing the layout, should I have a "universal" plate, would be pretty small.

Secondly.. If it was my preference, i would rather pay extra for an ALPS specific plate that had alps (not costar or cherry) stabs clip holes.

OK.

Do you want split backspace?

Do you want split right shift?

Pretty great, placed a switch in and was able to use a key cap puller to remove a key cap without the switch popping out. Used laserboost for the cutter

Yup, I'm going to be using the Alps Throwback set for keycaps and they use mx style stabs.

Yea, thinking more, I'm gonna do this:

Prototype mx / alps in acrylic.

Then I'm gonna order five alps polycarb plates with split backspace, split r shift, and alps stablizers.

If anyone wants one hit me up (it doesn't make sense to order one plate for $100+, when I can get five for significantly cheaper).

I can post files for any other folks (full backspace, full r shift), mx stabs, costar stabs, whatev.  But sweet Jesus, wrangling Alps preferences is like herding cats, since everything is incompatible with everything else!

Just wanted to say to not get split backspace and split right shift alps plates cause the only people who will have the sets needed for that are the real alps hoarders or people using mx stab alps sets which are few and far between.  Getting standard backspace and shift will make them easier to offload after you confirm your fitments.

That right there is the conflict that Alps fundamentally presents, due to the stabilizer issues.  I can't have both [money] and [the plate I want].  :P

As it is just one PCB, I think it was implied that it was going to have split right shift and backspace for alps too.

Pcb support is the easier part.  The alps plate can't satisfy everyone though, due to the alps stabs...

I would absolutely be down to get a PCB, hopefully it's not limited to 20 units. And if it doesn't affect cost, I think Black would be a good color for the PCB.

He said 30-40

Is this still going to be limited to 20 orders only?
I am so in for this.

For this run, we would like to limit orders to 1 pcb per person. Maximum total units to about 30-40 to keep qc tight. No limit to plates though.

Units: 35 (maximum)

What is the real reason for it? Is it only for your QC after PCBs arrival?
I mean, PCB do not looks complicated to manufacture at all - no underglow, no indicators, no in-switch leds etc. Not a serious task for big manufacturers, must be no problems. And if some PCBs will be defective, they are always can accept it and replace for new ones.
Demand for these PCBs is way bigger than 35 maximum.

hand assembly and QC

getting presoldered PCBs in quantities under 50 or 100 is generally prohibitively expensive

considering that there are only 60 or so alices in existence, it's not inefficient to limit to a certain number to keep costs down

Puddsy's right as the limit on the pcb is due to hand soldering.

Timeline would not match up and I didn't want to hold up any people on the plates that was in IC months before I posted about PCBs. If anyone wants to wait for their PCB to ship together, I will definitely ship them together but I can't promise the timeline for that yet.

I know it's probably too much to ask....but, with the acyrlic case design/cad files is there any chance the design can be tweaked to resemble the outer shape of the OG Alice?  It's looking great rn, but i reckon it would be even better if it wasn't rectangular, but close to the dynamic shape of the original...just a thought and a personal preference, i've no idea what people on here would actually prefer.

This group buy is meant to obtain parts based on the Yuktsi's original files: replacement pcb, plates, and the acrylic case. We are not trying to replicate or clone the alu version of Alice by TGR.

I did a similar thing, but I combined the top and bottom pieces to make it two part construction. And I heavily reshaped the outside edges. The PCB is the only missing part for me.

I'm definitely in for a PCB. Depending on price I might have to skip the case for now and just have one made from the files when I can afford it. I'm hoping for a black or white PCB! Will one of the acrylic options be clear? I would love to be able to see a black or white PCB through a clear plate.

I can't seem to find the comment I made expressing my interest in this potential group buy so I'm doubling down and I've redone the form and I'm gonna try commenting again to make extra sure that I definitely get notified about the GB as soon as it goes live!

Do we have an ETA on the PCB and Case?
Also I'm assuming that news for both group buys will be posted here?

At least for the case, I should be able to test the pieces in a 4 layer 5mm configuration by the end of the week. I know the guys at Homerow are also working on a prototype case at the moment.

I'm trying to put two and two together here based on what Zam and jaxxstacks have recently posted, but some clarification would be appreciated: will the acrylic case be in the style where you have to stack multiple pieces together (as Zam mentioned) or will there be a discrete bottom, plate, and top made from acrylic?

Yuktsi posted open source version of the acrylic case files in the Alice GB thread. Zambumon modifies them keeping it 4 parts, each 5mm thick. I modified them into a two part construction with integrated plate on the top half. Mine canít be laser cut like Yuktsiís or even CNCíd if you use acrylic. Iíve been spending months and a lot of money finding a manufacturer that can satisfactorily even make a one off for me, so Yuktsiís files or Zambumon are the way to go for now.
Keep in mind, from what I saw on MrKeebís stream with the 5mm acrylic plate layer, you canít use screw in stabilizers. You need PCB mount, flush stabs. Or if you go into CAD and extrude that layer, you can add cutouts like the Zephyr plate has.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! Also, sorry, I totally botched your username in my post. Hmmm I was never a fan of the acrylic stack style cases, guess I'll have to see how much they'll be for this GB before i determine if I'll join. One last question, did you mean plate mount stabs? Or none screw in pcb stabs?

Non-screw in stabs. Clip-in stabs

How about some 1.5mm metal layer options?
Low profile: 1) 1.5mm metal switch plate, 2) 3.5mm acrylic spacer, 3) PCB, 4) 5mm acrylic spacer, 5) 1.5mm metal bottom or 5mm acrylic bottom.
High profile: Add 0) acrylic keycap surround layer.

Or maybe I am making this too complicated?

Wait until I test the design, I've a 6x 3mm layer version, which should be easier to laser cut.

I think a 6x3mm would be a really cool opportunity to do clear acrylic, except for the integrated plate and use laser cut brass for that. Although that might not be in the interest of this GB.

If you guys don't want to do that, for the 6x3mm option, people could always have their own plates laser cut since it's open source.

The acrylic alice comes with an integrated plate. You do not need to buy a separate plate. Shoot me a PM or email me at contact@projectkeyboard.com.

Hi All,
I have some good news and bad news.
Starting with the bad news:
Our goals for the acrylic board did not align so I will be pulling myself from the acrylic boards for this group buy. Keebs may or may not continue production of these, but nonetheless I feel that fulfillment and quality control of these might be too complex for me as we are geographically located on other sides of the world.
Good news:
Prototypes for the PCB are on its way to me as we speak, and we will be hand soldering (God bless our souls) so we can test these out before we start the group buy. The actual production of these PCBs will be sourced to fab that can solder all the components for us, while we port it to QMK and create a default hex.
I know that many of you wanted to test the layout by ordering the acrylic alice and I apologize that I would be pulling these board from the group buy. However, there are many alternative options that can get you the acrylic boards. If you have a local shop that can laser cut acrylic or you can check out ponoko.com to have them cut for you.  Both of these are relatively inexpensive options.

You didn't need a plate for the acrylic case. The acrylic board has an integrated plate.

The GB is now PCB only. However, Zambumon is working to open source and prototype an acrylic case. You would then be able to use these files to create your own case through a local or online laser cutting shop.

Thank you for the clarification. Did the original include a plate as well, or was it just PCB mounted?
