Title: FMJ Aluminum Poker Case Group Buy (closed)
Post by: feng on Thu, 15 August 2013, 12:50:59
Round 2 is finally here. There're two news regarding this round. First, the base version is no longer available, so for this round we only have premuim version. Second, this is the last chance getting design #1 and design #2 from FMJ. After this group buy, they will be not make anything for 60% keyboards in the near future. The deadline for this GB is March 10th.

A friend of mine recently just started making his own keyboard-related products. The aluminum poker case is just our first step. We will present a lot more interesting things for keyboard lovers in the future. Our brand name is called FMJ (Full Metal Jacket). We will mostly focus on metallic materials to make keyboards, keycaps, etc., but not entirely.

As for this group buy, we have two different designs as discussed in my vendor form. Each design has its own unique elements.

Design #1 is what we are trying to simplify the most. It has no characteristics designs like Design #2. It basiclly fits most people's tastes. It also has thin frame - as you can see, it's thinner than most metallic cases on the market. One of the best parts is that it has brass poker weights on the bottom side.

[attach=1][attach=2][attach=3][attach=4][attach=5][attach=6][attach=7][attach=8][attach=9][attach=10]

Design #2 is where we put some unique and creative factors into. We were looking for some really strong engraving lines and angles that make it look like a fighting robot or something. This design originally doesn't come with brass poker weights because of its high CNC costs. But you can still have the brass poker weights on this design by adding $50.

[attach=11][attach=12][attach=13][attach=14][attach=15][attach=16][attach=17]

Other than designs, we also have two versions available including Base Version and Premium Version.

Base Version comes with regular anodizing, brass poker weights and uses aluminum #6061 T651.

Premium Version comes with hard anodizing, brass poker weights  and uses aluminum #7075 T651.

For those who are not familiar with hard anodizing: hard anodizing is much firmer than regular anodizing. It prevents scratches very well. Even if you scratch the surface wih a coin, it leaves nothing on the surfac. Hard anodizing also makes the colors look deeper.

We have 7 colors for base version and 8 colors for premium version.

Regular Anodization: Silver, Grey, Red, Blue, Green, Gold, Purple

Hard Anodization: Black, Titanium-Grey, Grey, Red, Blue, Green, Gold, Purple

This case is compatible with Poker,Poker II, Pure, Pure Pro and GH60.

You also get to decide whether or not you want the engraving FMJ Logo on the left side for design #1 or on the bottom for design #2 as shown in the following pics:

Really nice case, but my wallet forces me to pass on this one :(

Quick question Feng:

Will TKL cases get some love again in the future?

There's different aluminum alloys which probably affects how the anodization takes.

In other words, 6061 =/= 7075

I didn't even realize those numbers were referring to the aluminum material, thanks for clarifying.

Looks like you can hard anodize 6061 though.

Aluminum 6061 is a softer alloy with magnesium and silicon in it. Aluminum 7075 is a harder alloy with zinc in it. According to some books I have at work, the hard-anodization in 6061 can vary in finish while in 7075, it varies much less. Seems like feng is trying to get a better anodization finish and that's why 7075 is being hard anodized while 6061 is only being color or dye anodized.

Yes but the thickness of the anodization layer in what you're showing me is .001 less so the anodization quality won't be as good.

Ah, okay. That would make more sense then. I knew it was softer, but it would be nice to get hard anodization on the 6061 since it's more prone to corrosion than 7075.

Pretty sure in the environments your keyboards are in, you'll get bored of the keyboard before your case corrodes. But as always, I could be wrong.

Haha! I think you're right... Unless you live in the jungle or something... but then you're computer would also be at risk.

I guess I would also want it for the scratch protection feng mentioned, but you also mentioned a good point that it's max thickness is 0.001" less than 7075's.

I think the regular anodized finish would work well enough for me.

From what I can tell, you can get design 1 with the brass poker weights or design 2 without poker weights for the same price with either finish/material. You'll have to add $50 if you want the poker weights.

What does adding brass poker weights to design #2 mean?
It's mean add the brass weights to the bottom of design#2 just like #1?
Or it will have separate weights? or something else?
I can confuse on this
Title: Re: FMJ Aluminum Poker Case Group Buy (Taking Orders)
Post by: germy on Thu, 15 August 2013, 18:57:45
I asked feng about this previously. It means adding brass weights similar to those in Design #1 to the case in Design #2. According to him, the weights only add a total of 80g though. Just thought I should state that for anyone who was hoping they's add a substantial amount of weight (like me :'()

Still isn't going stop me from getting at least one of these bad boys though.

Edit: Feng could we have weight estimates for both the designs?
Title: Re: FMJ Aluminum Poker Case Group Buy (Taking Orders)
Post by: jonathanyu on Thu, 15 August 2013, 19:06:09
only 80g?  that seems a little bit light.
I like both of the design, but since the brass are only 80g, maybe it is not that useful. And it is at the bottom of the keyboard, which you won't see it when you are using it.. may be should go for the design#2
Title: Re: FMJ Aluminum Poker Case Group Buy (Taking Orders)
Post by: germy on Thu, 15 August 2013, 19:09:06
Yeah I don't know if he made a mistake with that estimate but one has to remember that material has to be removed from the case before putting the weights in so that's why the net change ends up being only 80g?

Can you confirm whether it is the same person?
Also, is this an almost similar design, or has the dimensions been reworked with?

Yeah it's the same person. The recreation of Duck was not for sale, it was for testing CNC, anodizing, details, etc. The dimensions have been reworked with as you can see from the brass poker weight and the thinner frame.

Will we be able to request the Poker suits on the back that are shown in your pictures? Basically the one on the Duck Mini V1.

I believe he is asking if the engraving on the back can be poker suits instead of FMJ. like on the duck poker.
I like the idea a lot.

I'll take the FMJ logo as well as the poker suits.

It would be tough to decide one over the other if I had to pick.

I think this grey is lighter than the titanium grey.

If the darker titanium grey was offered I'd jump on it.

I don't see case design 2 with the FMJ logo at all.

The logo on design #2 would differ from that on desigh #1. For design #2, we don't want to put the logo on the side as where it is on design #1 because design #2 has a straight line across all the way.

So we decided to put the logo on the bottom right above the poker weights. Basically it would look like this: [attach=1]

Seems like we won't be able to hit 20 MOQ, if that's the case, the production will be start on Sep 15th. Really had a lot of expectations on this case due to its incredible quality, but too many Poker cases are being for sale lately.

I personally think if that true titanium color was made available it would possibly draw in quite a few more orders. From imsto's thread:

Doesn't the case in the post above yours look very similar to the colour of those spacebars? I'd say they were pretty similar allowing for some differences due to lighting.

I'm probably gonna shoot for a grey one. Feel like a black one would be too subtle if there's such a thing.

The grey, titanium grey, and silver look too similar in the pictures.

I'm thinking I should change my order to black.

What do you guys think?

Based on the picture, I would think so. Titanium grey almost looks like silver imo.

Agreed. At this price it's hard to justify purchase a color sight unseen.
Spot on. A high quality product, pretty expensive and terrible marketing / advertising. To not have quality color swatches for every color is a sure fire way to keep sale quantities low. How can you expect someone to spend $250 to $300 with the information you are providing on colors. The tiny samples with poor lighting don't cut it.

Personally I like the RAL color chart that has been used it the past. It gives a uniform swatch of each color and also the RGB numbers. Is there a way of getting that here?

Thanks,
John

Design#1 Grey colour!

It is looking great, but a bit too heavy, though I guess its to be expected.
The Brass pokers at the back looks awesome in contrast to the grey, I think they should also work well on darker colors.
I don't know if there is anything else to be reviewed to be honest :/

I guess one criticism is that the top and bottom 'walls'(i don't know what to call them :x) are a bit thick.

Got my case, the blue color is absolutely amazing and now I regret not getting the brass weights in it but the weight is fine. Leaving for tailgating so pictures will have to wait until tomorrow or Sunday.

Got my case today. I decided to put up some box opening pics with initial reactions.

Package with beer for size reference.

Took DHL wrap off. Beer still there for size reference. Foam case.

Opened top foam layer. The case is protected very well. About an inch and a half of foam on all sides. Beer for reference.

Case taken out. Nice lines and cuts. Case smells like bacon. Beer for reference and starting to get warm.

Underside of case. Cool poker brass cutouts. Beer not in picture for reference.

I'll give an update after I install my PCB.

Let me know of you have any questions.

I want to do some comparison pics between this case, the hammer, and the other case whose name I forget.

Edit: there is no center pcb stem!

Pardon my noobness.
if this case does not have the center stem how is this going to effect anything? It has 5 mounting posts instead of 6.... Is that really enough to make a PCB curve?
I have one of the acrylic layered cases and it has already curved in the few months since I got it. I was assuming that this one being aluminum would not have that issue.

I think if it's plate mounted then it won't be a problem. But not sure though ...

edit: I asked feng bout this before purchased, he said it shouldn't have negative effects on the PCB.
Let's see if this holds true on practice.

I haven't installed the pcb yet. But, to me, I think you can break the pcb without center support.

If you look at the pics I uploaded, there are small lifts in the rear center of the case that will support the back. This will help reduce the chance of the board bending in the middle a little bit.

I'm imagining the center keys feeling unsecured. You might only feel it if you press hard. Since I haven't installed the pcb, I can't comment on how secure it "feels".

Most likely, I won't notice it too much. But, that's only because I cram two layers of shelf liner. I have done this with my other aluminum 60 percent cases. It creates a secure feeling on most keys when bottoming out and not just on the keys near the standoff pcb mounts. I might also put a little piece of the shelf liner in the middle creating a small third layer in the middle to give better support.

I'm going to install the PCB when I get home later today.

Does anyone else think this makes sense?

The pcb I'm using is plate mounted. Poker 2. So, it is better suited for this case, probably.

I have to test it when i get home later.

I put a small nut under the center area where the standoff should be. I also put three layers of cabinet liner in the case.

It feels very secure. I still wish it had the middle standoff but I think with the extra nut and liner, it will be fine.

I forgot to take comparison shots between the FMJ, MKC, and the Hammer case. I put the other cases away. I will take some comparison shots tomorrow.

I still have not had an opportunity to use a nice camera for my case, but I went ahead and installed my Pure into it. There is not that much of a weight difference between this one and the Hammer case, but that is expected because I got design 2 which has the nifty looking cutouts and such. The hammer is heavier in case that wasn't clear, but if I had brass poker mods it would probably be reversed. Mine has a couple of minor imperfections in the anodizing that I'm not too enthused about, but they are not really visible except from an extreme angle straight above the keyboard.

With minimal typing on it after removing it straight from the hammer case I'm going to say that I like the hammer case around 10% better, but I'll be keeping and using both for awhile anyways so it doesn't matter. Next comparison will be with an LZ-CE that will hopefully arrive any day now.

You're reading my mind. I was wishing I had a black space bar. It would look better.

I forgot to weigh it when I had the PCBs out of the cases. I did hold them both trying to "feel" the weight difference.

The Hammer actually feels heavier by a small degree. Maybe I'm imagining it. I thought the brass weights of the FMJ would put it over the top in terms of weight but it might be lighter than the Hammer. Without putting it on a scale, I can't be sure.

My pictures suck but I wanted to provide some feedback on the quality of the craftsmanship by the creator.

Every edge and detail has been angled to provide the smoothest most professional finish I have ever seen.

It weights a lot but not to much.

hopefully someone else can take some better pictures then me to show off the inside standoff areas and the angled edges.

I would highly recommend this to anyone debating getting in on round 2.

Its personal pref, i went for non logo and non footer bass so i could do metal engraving by myself. The weight is 1kg (around 1.5kg) which is quite okay, with the brass, i think you are looking at 1kg + 80g

I don't think there's 500g of a difference because someone mentioned that the brass weights only add 80g to the total weight in the early part of the thread after checking with feng.

why not spend more on the 7075 aluminum and hard anodizing?
I was afraid of scratching something that is so expensive, so I paid for the premium.

Just wondering but how is the feel and sound difference between stock poker 2 case and a aluminium  case?

Switching to an aluminum case, I noticed that bottoming out felt harder and more solid.

It didn't feel cheap when you bottom out since you hit metal instead of plastic.

It will be less likely to move around since it's heavier. It will be heavier picking it up, noticeably.

Also, adding a layer or two of shelf liner will increase the feeling of stability. It will create a stronger thud when bottoming out. It feels less loose.

And would investing in a metal plate be worth it also? From the buyer i'm getting it from it will be 35$

you can lube/sticker/springs later...
don't like mx reds.... you can swap the stems. this is what makes cherry mx so cool. plates that support removable switch tops....

I doubt R2 will start until the 14th or so next year, feng is taking a break/holidays until then according to his ebay page. I hope I could see if his friend could do different anodizing colors, mainly just a darker purple and I would be down for a design #1 I think. :)

This comes highly recommended, dat weight.

I decided to take a couple pictures of this case today, its beautiful and just feels amazing. I think it weighs about 2 pounds, this is without the extra weights and this is the base model. My only con (besides the missing center standoff) is my anodizing around and near the USB port on the back has some noticeable inconsistencies, somewhat hard to get a proper picture of it though.

Nice color, I agree with you about the inconsistency in the area around the USB port. Also, the case has much space between the pcb and the bottom which create echo when typing. I have to inset a layer of soft matte to absorb

Looking for some feedback regarding this case and the missing center standoff. I'm interested in putting my Pure in here, but it is PCB mounted. It seems like that's a lot of stress to put the center of the PCB under without any support. I'm not interested in plate mounting it because I enjoy the feeling of PCB mounted browns more than plate mounted. Anyone else have a plateless 60% in the case?

I'm using Pure in FMJ case premium version with weight right now. I have problem screwing the PCB onto one of the standoffs and I'm not sure it's me doing it the wrong way or case modeling problem. And without the center standout and the standout I am not able to use, the PCB is very shaky when I type hard on some keys in the lower middle part of keyboard. But in general, that does not bother me that much.

No, actually the producer didn't put the center standoff in on purpose. He said that it makes the typing experience more uncomfortable when there is a center standoff.

If you can convince FMJ to do a TKL case with the same design initiatives shown for the previous Poker pcb's then you will have some orders coming your way.

Besides there are more TKL owners out there than Poker possessors  :thumb: .

For better or worse this makes me confident in a no buy of this case, beautiful as it is. In future designs it could be an idea to make the center standoff removable for users to decide themselves to use or not.

Hammer and the designer of FMJ will be doing a TKL kit together. That's the biggest thing this year.

I have to mention that I don't know whether that's official though. That's what I heard from many people, many people that are closed to Hammer and the designer of FMJ, so I think you can take it as official.

Has anyone paid attention to TEK-80 by the way? I personally think TEK-80 is the best TKL case I've ever seen. Photos quoted.

I've most certainly payed attention to TEK-80, because I agree that it's the best-looking TKL! Photekq has said that there will not be a group-buy for it run by him, but that he's open to others doing it (the files are available).

if anyone is on the fence about picking one of these up

i urge you to do so before its too late as this is the final run

i love this case, i have several duck cases, and a host of other ones that have come up around here, i would think about 10 - 15 different 60% alu cases

this one is by far my favourite

i have the design 1, the simple one with the brass weights

beautiful quality, great materials and was packed perfectly and arrived safely

totally flawless

Wow, I really want a design 1. I've never tried a 60% but I really want a poker 2 now. My issue isn't with the price though - I can't pick out a color! Can't decide between blue, grey or titanium grey. The only colors I've definitely eliminated are green and gold.

Did anybody get the blue in round 1? I'm curious if it's closer to the blue in the OP, or if it's lighter like the one Feng had for sale in his classified ad:

For a case this good, my suggestion is, go for classic colors, silver, grey, titanium grey, black. I got a black case in Round 1 and I have to say black FMJ + Dolch is awesome. Looks really really nice.

I have design #2 in blue without brass weights and it is still super heavy and very well made. The only reason I'm selling mine is because I don't need so many 60% cases. If you are riding the fence on these, just pull the trigger. You will not be unhappy. Or buy mine if you want it in blue and don't want to wait :p
Title: Re: FMJ Aluminum Poker Case Group Buy (taking orders until 3/10)
Post by: cultofjosh on Mon, 03 March 2014, 13:25:11
I am leaning towards grey right now. Only interested in design 1, sorry :( If I didn't love the brass weights on the bottom I'd be looking at cheaper aluminum cases. I wasn't looking at 60%s at all until I saw that case.

I am interested in the blue because I'm considering building a "company keyboard" for my machine at work - I think there's too much risk that the blue will end up clashing with our blue. I do love black, but I don't want black in this case because I plan on using lighter colored keys and I don't want the huge contrast like on my code keyboard/all white Cherry Replica set. And while I like the purple and red a lot (more so than I like the blue), I am thinking for something like this, I want it as neutral as possible so I can put any keycaps on them.

So I guess I'm down to grey or titanium grey  ;D I think Penumbra + grey will look pretty cool on this? That'll probably be the first keycaps set I put on this. Until wallet-hack makes me buy more.

Just got this news from FMJ: they will not make any new cases for 60% keyboards in the near future. Their next step is to make something related to 80% keyboards.

It was my mistake saying that FMJ would make new designs (for 60% keyboards). :/

Perhaps, but I'd say it makes sense to reward someone looking for a specific group buy item that has several rounds and keeps following up on the thread hoping for another round. Or hoping to find a group buy spot, but cheaper and already available seems better than waiting and buying a spot. You can delete my clutter if you'd like or it doesn't belong.

Not sure why he wouldn't respond to this thread, but he must have good reason.  I've bought from him before.  Just confusing why he would respond to his WTS thread, but not this one.  Maybe there just isn't an update at this time.  Looks there are also two people who need to pay.

I already purchased and received my FMJ Design #1 Premium and would like to say that words can not express how happy I am with it.
I have a concern about the case's compatibility with the gh60 and the upcoming led expansion module.

Sounds like it will collide with about every aluminium case as well. Added depth below the the top row?
The most protruding part of the module will be the header pins, which will stand 5.5mm out of the mainboard

Could someone with maybe measure the internals of the Design #1 and Design #2?
I do not currently have any way of doing this or I would do this myself...

This space is needed below keys 5,6,7,8 in the top row from the pictures of the pcb's I have studied but may also include keys 4 and 9 as well.

Got hit with $18.90 duty though. Oh well...

Just selected a few pictures:

Very small blemish in the left hand corner. The picture makes it look worse than it really is.

Small imperfections at the bottom of the cutout. It's visible on both sides, but the right hand side is a bit more obvious.

Another small blemish in the top-rightish surface. Won't be seen in normal use.

Case was packed very snugly in 1.5"-2" foam all around.
Will post the rest of my pictures in "What did you get in the mail today"  :p

Feng,

Would it be possible to ask the manufacturer if he could make blockers like the kmac blockers for the FMJ cases to support winkeyless and HHKB layouts? I am pretty sure this would boost interest in these tray cases by providing these options.

Edit: They might also be good to go with the hammer cases as well.

the duck lightsaver v2 has them in 1x

does anyone happen to have close up shots of the blockers? I am curious how they attach.
I did not notice that in the OP or I would have ordered a bunch of them. :(

it sits on top of the space for the switch.
and screwed in place at the bottom.

I'd also be interested in one if there's another group buy. I really like the case's design and materials!

Any updates on both this, and the site still being down?

Also, any chance of getting the premium design #1 with alu weights?
Doesn't make a lot of sense that the alu weights are being manufactured but only offered if buying the base version.

No FMJ logo either. I'm not very attracted to the ones on originative. I have a blue FMJ but it's design #1 without an FMJ logo as well (but with weights at least).

My ideal case is a weightless design #2 case with FMJ on the back bezel.

Hey Feng, any chance I you would let me make and sell resin versions of this case? i'll send you one :-)

I attached the sample one, its not perfect since it was just a test to see if I could make one.

I'm mostly active on Reddit, I posted a bunch of pictures of resin cast keycaps I have made. I could use any of these color ways for this case. All I need is permission lol. My Reddit username is /u/busgamer7394
