Active PS/2 to USB adapter
« on: Wed, 03 April 2019, 18:42:02 »
I bought a Model M keyboard last year (well ANOTHER Model M) and decided to "go cheap" and buy an active PS/2 to USB Adapter, rather than one of orihalcon's excellent cables.

I found this adapter on eBay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Generic-PS-2-PS2-to-USB-Male-Converter-Adapter-Cable-for-Keyboard-and-Mouse/112496332260?epid=16006168935&hash=item1a314dcde4:g:ru8AAOSwWGtZeFTj&frcectupt=true

The adapter worked well enough, but GOD was it slow.  When I tried to delete a word using the backspace key, it was painful to watch.

I finally broke down and bought one orihalcon's cables and now typing speeds seem normal.

I know in the past, people have recommended using the purple cube, but I think that item has been discontinued, since I can't see, to find it anywhere.

Just a PSA.

I have used those cheap "Y" adapters with several different keyboards and never had a problem.

It may be a function of how well it shakes hands with the motherboard.
“No political truth is of greater intrinsic value, or is stamped with the authority of more enlightened patrons of liberty: The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands .… may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.” —James Madison, Federalist 47
“All the powers of government, legislative, executive, and judiciary, result to the legislative body. The concentrating of these in the same hands, is precisely the definition of despotic government. An ELECTIVE DESPOTISM was not the government we fought for; but one .... in which the powers of government should be so divided and balanced among several bodies of magistracy, as that no one could transcend their legal limits, without being effectually checked and restrained by the others.” — Thomas Jefferson, commentary on Federalist 48

I haven't had any issues with the cheapo adapters with my model M either.

I've been using the Belkin F5U119v Y-cord adapters forever with my Model M's, never any problems.
