Bought My first model M and have a few questions about cleaning and bolt modding

I just got a 1986 model M XT model that while fully functions and feels good, is filthy and is already missing a few of the plastic rivets.
I don't think that the board was ever opened since all of the missing rivets were sitting in the back of the case, and there was quite a bit of loose dirt in there as well.
What i want to know is this
Should I clean the board and leave it alone until something goes wrong?
Should I clean it and bolt mod it even though I am fairly terrified of doing so, but I will receive help from my father who is pretty good with this kind of stuff?
Or should I just shell out the money and pay someone like clickykeyboards.com to do it?
thanks for any and all advice!

I bolt modded a few boards with no real experience. I personally would clean and bolt mod it if I were you. Just make sure to read the guides properly, it is pretty straight forward.
I do think a bolt mod is something that anyone can do and it requires minimal tools, I do not think it would be worth paying someone to do it unless they were close to you to remove postage costs.

It is fussy and tedious work, but the only really tricky part is the precise drilling of the holes. Get your father's help there, and if he has a drill press that would be outstanding.
PS - don't be surprised if re-assembly takes multiple tries to keep everything in place, it could take 5-10 goes for a first-timer
PPS - a frame made out of scrap wood can be a huge help

I cleaned the board yesterday (good god what an improvement), I think I'm gonna order the screws, nuts, and bolts and just wait until I think the board really needs it. Thus far, the board works with zero issues and it feels great.
