First time builder - have some questions
« on: Wed, 18 September 2019, 12:09:43 »
Hello all,

As the title states, I want to build a keyboard.

I chose the GK64 PCB from KBDfans but am having trouble figuring out which case is compatible with this PCB. Every time I try to verify if a case is compatible, some users say yes, others say no due to center screws being in the way, hot swaps being in the way, etc... So the case I have in mind is the 60% bamboo case from KBDfans. Are these compatible?

My second question has to do with the PCB, plate, stabilizer, and keycap compatibility. With the aforementioned PCB, I need to get a left shift 2U plate. Would original cherry PCB-mount stabilizers from KBDfans fit this PCB + plate? I ask because I don't know if I need a special left shift stabilizer for a 2U PCB + plate combo.

And lastly, is the left shift on this set of keycaps - https://www.banggood.com/AKKO-World-Tour-Tokyo-114-Keys-Cherry-Profile-Dyesub-PBT-Keycaps-Keycap-Set-for-Mechanical-Keyboard-p-1411856.html?rmmds=buy&cur_warehouse=USA - a 2U key? I can't seem to find any information on this anywhere.

Thanks a lot for any help, it's greatly appreciated.

PCB, PLATE, CASE compatibility.... i can't comment as i don't have any of those parts. do a search for a build using those parts & see what you come up with. you could also search for "GK64 build" or "GK64 keyboard build" as the PCB will be the main determining factor of what will fit.

standard left shift is 2.25u not 2u (set you linked to would be 2.25u)
take a look at keyboard layout editor, you can click on any key & see the size

are you using an alternate layout other than standard? reason for 2u left shift?

most stabilized keys use 2u stabilizers except for the spacebar

Maybe this will help.

I'm aware of how keyboard layouts and such work, my main concern is if the PCB will fit in that case. Someone below already answered my stabilizer and keycap question, so I got that sorted out

Thanks for this. The reason for using 2u left shift is it just so happens that the PCB I chose has a 2u left shift due to the bottom row being shifted to the left to accommodate arrow keys. I'm starting to think I should find a more "standard" 60% layout PCB....

if going with the GK64, i'd stick to what looks to be compatible on their site. https://kbdfans.com/search?q=GK64

There are other hotswap 60%s HS60, a hot swap version of the GH60, GMMK, etc...

i see now on the GK64 why the 2u left shift.... to make room for the 3 keys on the right (instead of a 2.75u shift). wish this was out when i went to 60%, would have jumped all over it. i'm one that needs dedicated arrow keys. the "pure" was about the only option at the time...

if you are looking for arrows on the bottom right, look at either the KBTalking/Vortex Pure layout (only difference from standard is a 1.75 right shift, linked above... "this"), filco minila,  or something with a little separation like the Leopold FC660M.
