Realforce R2: Are they just the 87u in a new case?

Or is there a different feel? The sound doesn't strike me as all that different.

In feel and sound you aren't gonna expect much. It still uses the normal Topre switches we all love. It has ACP you can change the actuation now. Lay out is now standard. They also finally got media keys took them a while. So yeah kind of a 87U in a new case with a standard layout and modern functions added to it.

I summarized it in another thread, but the improvements are pretty good. The case is much more stable and lacks the flex of the previous model, and the silenced switches are much quieter than previous silenced ones, likely due to the case materials. There’s no clacking from the space bars or any of the long keys which is a blessing, and they even fixed the wonky keycap printing on certain keys. There’s not really a good reason to just buy a new one all out if you already have an R1 but it’s a superior product functionally and (I believe) priced same or cheaper than before. I have the limited edition 87u as my daily driver and have to say I enjoy it much more than I ever liked my Type-S or original 660C.

Lay out is now standard.
The bottom-row layout is a standard, which is different from the one used before.

No...it is what we refer to on keyboard forums as "standard".  You've certainly been here long enough to know that.

I don't consider there to be a huge change either....some of the printing is better on the keycaps..it has a "standard" bottom row...overall it is a better keyboard..although I prefer the old case better (which when I got it I didn't think I'd ever be saying).

I agree that if you have an old RF...there is no reason to change it out..the change is minimal.
