Clearance on the side of plate?
« on: Fri, 29 November 2019, 13:34:51 »
Hello! Me and a friend are designing a keyboard. So far we have the pcb and the plate. However I'm designing the case, and I'm not sure how much room to have between the side of the plate and the inside of the case. I asked 001Anthony, a streamer I watch, and he said the distance between two GMK keycaps, but couldn't provide a value or number. I'd really appreciate any answers.

Are you talking about tolerances? I don't own one, but looking at pictures of the Vortex Core, if you're making the case from metal you can get mad tight: https://www.techpowerup.com/review/vortex-core/images/disassembly-1.jpg

You know the dimensions of the dimensions of your pcb, my guess is you only need a mm clearance between the pcb and the case. Make sure you round the corners though, as the inner corners of your case are also going to be rounded.

That's along the lines of what I was thinking, thanks!

If you're getting it machined 1mm is huge and the gap would look ugly if the plate is mounted level with the top of the case like the Core - the tighter the better, right up until you scratch the coating fitting it in.  I'm going to resist posting a recomendation as I'm stupid (ill...) but 1mm is definitely way too big.

Pretty sure Anthony was talking about the gap between the edge of a high case and the caps which should be the same as between two caps to look consistent and allow for wobble.  That measurement will be in the CAD resources thread I'm sure, along with anoything else you need.
