Model F 5291 Bigfoot problem
« on: Thu, 02 January 2020, 11:17:01 »
Hello all!  First time poster here.  I recently came into possession of a really excellent condition Model F "Bigfoot" 5291 terminal and keyboard.  Thanks to Soarer's software and a fantastic write-up by jacethesaltsculptor, I was able to use a Teensy2 to get it working with my modern computer.  The problem is this, six keys are inoperative.  The same six keys all the time: "C,V" on the bottom row, "F,G" on the next row up, "R, T" on the next row up, and "5,6" on the top row.  I've disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled everything, but that has not solved the problem.  Every other key works flawlessly, no repeats, no issues.  Just those six keys persistently wont work.  Is there a possibility of a broken solder joint or trace somewhere?  Could someone perhaps point me in the right direction?

Thank you in advance,

Bradley

Hey man,

Not sure if this will help but I'm having a similar problem with my bigfoot. It's outputting every other key with two codes each, like the letters skip or something. Still working on that. Have you checked your grounding screw for its tightness? Do all of the wires to the teensy have continuity? Hope it's not a trace, man...

Thank you for your response!  I've cleaned and tightened the grounding screw.  There is a possibility that there may be a small issue with the wiring between the keyboard and the teensy, I'm going to look into that this weekend.  The problem is, even if there were one wire that wasn't doing what it should, I would think i'd have more of a problem than six specific keys not working (though, I could be wrong there, i dont know much about how these operated or communicate?)  I'm starting to accept the fact that it might be a bad trace on the board.  The keyboard works flawlessly except for those six keys, and six of them are in one cluster on the keyboard.  It depresses me so much because the keyboard is in totally mint condition otherwise.

Thank you for your response and I will keep you updated on what I find!

Wow, I really don't know what else it could be. I think that I may have scrambled my teensy by accidentally turning it on with the conductive foam on it, or one of the little chips on the backboard because I just changed and tightened that ground as well and had the same results. I'm going to order another teensy and be more careful this time and hopefully that fixes it. I would really hate for a mint board like this to just not work.
