Metal keycaps are popping up on Chinese websites
« on: Fri, 17 April 2020, 11:16:50 »
I figured I should share this, now that I have already purchased what I may want for the near future. There are caps that have been popping up for the past few months, going by review dates, etc, that appear to be made entirely of metal of some kind. Some pages specify zinc, some say aluminum. They do all appear to be being made in the same place, and they do appear to be entirely made out of metal, for surprisingly reasonable prices. I have even found some in other colors, like red. What do you guys think? I'm not normally a cap sort of guy myself, but I appreciate quality/durability.

No, I couldn't find any number keys in stock, and there don't appear to be any spacebars. I wish they would make a Corsair bottom row, since these would look awesome on a K65.

full sets of these have existed since like 2011, they're ok at best and be sure to use a heavier switch

Really? I could never find anything when searching for metal keycaps, other than people trying to machine sets of them, talking about how it could cost $1,000 for a set, and people still showing interest. What are their shortcomings? Sound? Fit? I already have a K65 with box navies in it. I figured that would be perfect. It already pings like hell, and I would find it even more entertaining than it already is if these magnify it further. I'll have to jerry rig the bottom row of course, as usual.

they tarnish pretty easily. if you could get a blank set maybe it'd be okay.

I remember the ones I had were from 2012 shortly after feng's gb, but not a full set just a few novelties. (the shiny gold ones of course)

as long as you know what you're getting, it's fine to play with since they're pretty cheap, but you get what you pay for.

I don't believe that any of the ones that I ordered were, or the ones in the link I included. They do make them, but only in limited options that I could find. I wouldn't want them like that either. These looked, to me, like laser engraving or something.

I like things with a good worn look to them, though that does look pretty rough. The K65 was already used, with some scratches, and I decided to not even sand them back to a cohesive brushed finish again. It adds character. Maybe I should clear coat them or something then though. I'm surprised they would make zinc keycaps without some kind of surface finish. Maybe that's changed since then?

Honestly, personally, I can't see how metal keycaps could possibly be worth any more than what these cost, if they're being cast. And if casting is possible, there's no reason to machine them anyway. I wouldn't be interested in anything that would cost more. The value wouldn't be there.
