Tri Snap Cable Keeper
« on: Fri, 17 April 2020, 04:05:14 »
Hi all,

I've been sitting on an idea for cable keeping for the past few days and will be prototyping over the weekend.

I usually shorten my cables (mouse, headphone and dac) with a simple cable snap.

This works perfectly fine with cables I don't really care for like the ones for the mouse and dac however I do prefer looping up the cable instead of folding as it eventually deforms the cable like so:

I do loop my headphone cable and keep it snapped in the configuration below but at the end of the day, the loops do get smaller and the cable longer as there isn't a way to stop the cable from being pulled at both ends.

I have considered the twist ties but prefer a wider surface area that the cable snaps have. I have sketched out a few solutions and I think i'll go with the tri snap one. Looks like a weird tripod in the sketches. Will post updates of the prototype.

you seem to have though pretty good about it, you are planing on using leather or something else? it is for sure something interesting, not sure it would get much market if you try to sell it though, i can be wrong but peoples tend to go for the cheap option whenever possible and increasing the material used by something will impact the cost. not trying to keep you down, just maybe do not invest too much huge into promotional material :)

Yup, am planning to use a mix of leather and suede. No worries as this is just a personal project and I don't have plans for selling it.  :)

unless you're using a pretty thick/stiff leather, you might want to keep a little more material on the bottom side so it keeps it's form. might also look neat if the disc was metal... aluminum, copper, brass and the straps were threaded through the disc. might be able to get away with one strap or if not, two straps that cross each other through the disc? that way it would keep it's shape but the snaps could be on soft suede straps.

Am using a softer leather for this but Ill double down in the middle so that it doesn't fold onto itself. Ah, a quad snap! Ill keep that in mind 😉!

Spent the morning prototyping and i'm pretty pleased with the results!

The tri snap uses Italian Nappa leather lined with waterproof suede with an extra layer in the middle for it to keep its form. Ends are blackened brass buttons from PRYM. Can't help but have the contrasting orange threads in the middle as I wanted it sewn in one go.

Its heavier than a regular snap but it does not bother me as I just have it coiled behind my laptop.

This does not fit my headphone cable though (Beyerdynamic DT770) as the cable is too thick to coil into such a small diameter. However, its perfect for both my dac and mouse. Will draw up another design with longer and thicker arms to fit a wider coil.
