Hiya!
« on: Thu, 18 March 2021, 16:30:27 »
Hello geekhack, goodbye money!

I feel down a rabbit hole of mechanical keyboard youtube vids a few weeks ago, and I'm going to be building my first mech kit soon!

I still haven't decided on switches, got some testers on their way to me though. I love listening to vids of the clicky box jades, but I talk to customers on the phone for work sometimes and don't know if that would be too much of a distraction on calls!

Anyways thanks for reading!

Hi turtlebranch. Welcome to Geekhack.

The way inflation looks to be headed, I think I would much rather have a stack of keyboards than the Monopoly money issued by governments right now.

Jades are an excellent choice if you like clickies.  :thumb: Personally, I think they're the best MX-compatible clicky ever made, although navies and pinks are great too. The whole family beats MX handily. I don't think they're the best clicky switches around, but there are some major caveats in terms of customization choosing anything else.

I work in various schools and routinely use thunderous clicky keyboards in the middle of a library and/or surrounded by students. The trend seems to be indifference or actually liking to hear them. The exception comes with high-pitched clickies like capacitive buckling spring, MX blue, box navies, etc (I consider jades pretty bassy, almost as nice as SKCM blue Alps sound-wise). Some people are indifferent, some like like, but a third group doesn't like hearing it. I can't say that's universal, but I haven't heard any complaints at all from box jades, SKCM blue and white, SMK second generation, or Matias switches.
