Greetings!
« on: Mon, 22 March 2021, 10:20:40 »
Hi my name is Dan, I started my keyboard journey by purchasing a refurbished Corsair K70 with Cherry MX Red's and it felt great to finally have a mechanical keyboard. Fast forward to a year later and I stumbled across a YouTube video regarding custom keyboards (big mistake). This is where the obsession started :) ). A month has passed since stumbling across that video and I decided, rather than rushing into soldering, group buying (since I'm still new to this hobby), etc. that I would buy my first hot swappable keyboard.

I decided to settle with what was available to me and go for the:

- GMMK Compact 60% Keyboard (ISO Layout)
- Gateron Black Switches
- Tai Hao Sunshine PBT Double Shot Keycaps

So far I feel like I've made a good purchase and I'm really enjoying the compact size and feel of the keyboard, although the stabilizers do require lubricating (which I will get round to doing once I can find some stock :) ).

Hi Dan. Welcome to Geekhack.

I still use a K70 with MX reds for gaming, have for a long time now.

How are you liking the Gateron blacks by comparison? Smoother, I imagine. You can't go wrong with the GMMK, as far as I have seen.

Those caps remind me of sherbet. They look great, though I'm not big into caps. I think linear people end up going with thicker caps down the road, Tai Hao's are pretty thin.

Whatever you enjoy that didn't cost way more than anything else you would enjoy equally is a good purchase in my book.

Have you tried any other switches yet?

The Gateron Blacks are great compared to the Cherry MX Red's however I would like to try the NovelKey Cream switches (lubed) to get a comparison, I've heard mixed reviews about them but once lubed they seem to be ok, is there any other switches that you would recommend that give that nice creamy sound when pressed?

I thought I would go for these keycaps as it was more colourful however upon putting them on I'm not so sure anymore and think that darker coloured or plain grey keycaps would have been better (unfortunately stock is very limited at the moment so I think I'm stuck :)) ).

What do you mean by a creamy sound? I'm not a big fan of MX, or linears, but I think with linear switches sound comes mostly down to material, thickness, and construction of the plate, case, and caps.

I imagine if you swap caps, you'll find another board to put the current ones on.  ;D
