unergonomic chairs
« on: Mon, 09 August 2010, 21:01:52 »
So, I was thinking... has anyone seen extremely unergonomic chair(s)?

I think if there's one thing I want to be ergonomic, it has to be the chair. But there's always some twisted minded person who doesn't care about ergonomics and wants to make something very painful to the spine.

So post any pictures of chairs that you've found to be fairly unergonomic.

Here's some I thought looked rather painful and/or discomforting (or sometimes flat out weird):

Chairs at most fast food restaurants. They're actually not very comfortable by design. It's not that their designers are idiots. Far from it... they design their seating to be less than comfortable because they don't want people to stay too long.

Around here they switched from uncomfortable hard-plastic-shell-seats to comfy leather seating...

I guess it works both ways.

Probably fastfood restaurants that get more customers (i.e. McDonald's & burger king), would invest in something to limit guest visitation, whereas, a coffee shop competing against starbucks or whatever, would want something to attract as many guests as possible.

It's amazing how atmospherics can affect people (scents, colours, decor etc).

Yeah, supposedly the seats in McDonalds are purposefully designed to be uncomfortable so that people don't feel inclined to sit around longer than it takes them to eat food.

That's why people in the US are so fat; it's to make the McDonald's seats more comfortable.

Looks just like the ones they have at school... hard wood, with scant pieces of metal.

The worst ones were these metal ones which had small wooden writing tables on the right side -- my friend, who was left handed (in writing anyways), had to use two. The metal really dug into your back.

Annoyingly enough, they got all the teachers new iPads (yeah that's VERY expensive), but no, they can't afford new desks or chairs? Even some soft chair covers would be nice.

Yes, that's a wire coat hanger in place of the one arm. Yes, the legs came off another chair. No, it's not height adjustable anymore.

Okay kishy, there are some things best left at the dump.

Well, I think you should take a detour from investing in keyboards, and consider buying a new chair.

And hey! You have  SUPER fan, I do too, but it's bigger. I had it since forever... those things never seem to break.

Jeeez Kishy! When eIBM is telling you to upgrade, it's time to upgrade! If and when you can afford it, you owe it to your future health to be sitting in something better.

And even I say he should upgrade his chair. And I'm much cheaper and out-of-date than EIBM.

I've been working on this for a while now (gathering info stage).

The end result will hopefully be the driver's seat from a wrecked midrange vehicle mounted on a wooden frame with rubberized lockable casters.

I think this will be more helpful:

There is quite literally no such thing as a chair you can buy new that stands up to the abuse I will put it through.

Recall that I demand a working life of 10+ years out of stuff. Yes, my chair is beyond that threshold by quite a bit, and my next one will make it even further.

And since a decent seat at a junkyard is less than the purchase cost of ANY durable chair (and what I get will be infinitely more comfortable), it's the logical choice.

I actually like the chairs & office desks at staples. But some of it is pretty chinsy... this gelwrest I got already looks as if it has some wear on the fabric.

OK, tell me if you find any 6562s...

Get an old computer chair. The one I use at work is over 30 years old.

I've also used these chairs. They're plain and simple, but they last forever.

How about this? Put some wheels on the framework on the bottom and you got yourself a full back computer chair.

I should too. My home computer chair's in even worse shape than the one you got. But my work one's nice. Orange fake-leather and chrome all the way.

But if I made myself a wheely recliner, it'd have a footrest.

On the Internet I actually found a photo of the same model chair as my home computer chair. The only difference is mine's threadbare, and the back fell off and is held on by an old carriage bolt I scrounged out of my workshop that's an inch too long.

NOTE-That's NOT my chair, NOT my spill, and NOT my bed!
