Some questions about the Unicomp New Model M
« on: Wed, 21 April 2021, 23:35:43 »
I got one last week.  I like it a lot so far - it's stone-obvious they refreshed their tooling, I haven't seen a Unicomp look so crisp and fresh in forever. That glorious buckling-spring feel is unchanged.

Has anyone cracked one of these puppies open yet?  I tried, but either the screws are locktited or they were tightened with a power driver because I couldn't budge them - my screwdriver just cammed out.

I want to know if the cable has internal strain relief - older Unicomps didn't, and that led to intermittent faults after cable strain.

I 'm also curious if there are any reports of the kind of USB flakiness that afflicted some of Unicomp's older models - incompatibility with some hubs, sensitivity to undervoltage, that sort of thing. (I've had no problems so far.) Ideally I'd like to know what USB controller or SOC they're using.

Buckling springs forever...

According to Sharktastica's review, the controller is the same as before.
It also looks like no strain relief, it it is difficult to tell black-on-black in these images.

I've seen reports on the new SSK having USB issues, but I dunno about the full-size model.
