Realforce RGB Space Bar Stabilizer Question
« on: Mon, 28 June 2021, 15:18:02 »
I've had a couple of Realforce RGB keyboards, and both of them have had the same issue with the space bar where if you tap it on either edge, it makes a somewhat metallic pinging noise.  I'm assuming it has something to do with the metal wire hitting something inside.  Has anyone figured out a way to fix this?  It makes an otherwise wonderful keyboard pretty annoying.  I've tried filling the holes in the stabilizer pegs where the wires go with grease, but it doesn't seem to fix it for very long.  I've also silenced the keyboard, so the upstroke clack that might otherwise hide some of the noise is no longer there.

The Band-Aid mod where you put a strip in between the stabilizer and the plate?  I hadn't thought of that one.  I was planning on taking it apart one more time and trying the heat shrink tubing over the stabilizer wire end mod, too.  It's just a mystery what exactly rattles.  Of course it's much less obvious with the space bar off, but I can still get it to do it by tapping the top of either stabilizer peg.

I ended up putting some 1.5mm heat shrink tubing on the center of the stabilizer wire to reduce vibrations, and on the ends where it enters the stabilizer pegs.  Interestingly enough, the holes in the pegs seem to be tapered, so with the heat shrink tubing all the way to the ends, the wires wouldn't fit.  I had to leave a couple of millimeters of the wire ends bare.  I filled the stabilizer pegs with Super Lube grease, which seems to help quite a bit, although the amount I used made the space bar pretty slow to react until I used the keyboard for a couple of days.  It's nice and responsive now, and quite a bit quieter than the un-modified space bar on my other Realforce R2.  I didn't do the Band-Aid mod since it didn't look like it would do anything after looking at the way the stabilizers are constructed.  They snap into the underside of the plate and don't appear to contact the PCB at all.  They also snap in very securely, and don't appear to have any slop or movement.  Even a Band Aid would prevent them from snapping into place, I think.  So far I'm much happier with how the space bar is.
