Ergodash Not Sitting Flat
« on: Thu, 24 March 2022, 10:42:30 »
I just got a new Ergodash, assembled by someone else. It looks good but both halves don't sit flat. I have no tenting or any such -- just the plexiglass keyboard frame.

I don't think anything can be done about this -- doesn't seem I can safely bend the plexiglass (or whatever material it is).

So I guess I could just tape a folded up piece of paper on the bottom. Seems a bit odd for a brand new keyboard, but returning it and paying $30 shipping (twice) sounds like even less fun....

Unless this is called a defect.

I've found a couple of versions of this keyboard, can we get a picture of your board to see how it's made?  My first thought was they could be missing a rubber bumpon on one corner but you probably already ruled that out.

To share the story, I was debating between ErgoDox and ErgoDash, but I wanted only a pre-built keyboard. As you know, this type of DIY is not for me.

So I found on ergomech dot com that he sells Ergodash and I thought it was prebuilt. After I ordered, he clarified that it doesn't include switches and keycaps and I could thus ask for a refund if I didn't want that. Then he offered to provide and install both for me. I agreed and paid extra for that. When it came, the keys are (as you can see) very lacking -- they are not right at all. They are a bit random in fact, like Esc and Space and Enter etc. I emailed him and he apologized for the misunderstanding and he had meant to communicate that he just had some extra keys lying around.

So he indeed refunded the $20 I paid for the keycaps.

So this is what I have:

Looks good, caps for random layouts rarely match in both legend and profile unless you use a uniform profile like DSA where they can go anywhere.

Assuming those screw heads are sticking out they are what the board will be resting on and they are not the same distance from the front, so it will wobble.  Also depending how big the step at the back is it might be resting on the corner of the thumb cluster?   What you need to finish it off is some rubber feet - get round/part ball ones as they work at any angle.  You'll have to or work out how thick you need them depending how tall the screw heads are and how big the step is, and you can probably find smaller packs on another site but I wouldn't know of any near you.

Put the board upside down and move the feet around until you can rest a book on top without it wobbling then stick them in that position - it's easier than trying to balance the board on the feet :thumb:

I found some "non-slip pads" in my house, like little stickers with a soft cushion on the top. You are correct that it rests on the very bottom corner of the thumb cluster. One of these little pads under the top middle corners however, seems to fix that.

Before I stick it on, however, I am still not 100% certain I want to keep this keyboard. I think I could return it and get a refund but the shipping was $30 USD (which I wouldn't get back) and then I would also lose my shipping costs back to Vietnam. :(

There is no market in Israel for such a keyboard. But I have a friend coming to London if you know of someone who might want such a keyboard. :)

Cost me $190 USD total (including Gateron Yellow Switches and $30 shipping) which I think overall is actually a good price. Since the (limited) set of Doubleshot PBT Keycaps came for free.

Sorry, but after reading this topic title, I had to say, "Doo dah, doo dah!" Maybe you had to be born in the 20th century to get that.
