Mitsumi Miniature Mechanical switches.
« on: Mon, 04 April 2022, 18:38:33 »
I wouldn't classify this as a review as much as a first impression of my NOS Chicony KB-5191. I'm just getting into this hobby but a recent acquaintance was talking about how he loved MMM switches. I had always been told that these switches were complete (for lack of a better word) dog****. This person and a few others assured me though that these switches were hidden gems. So this friend hooked me up with a NOS listing on Ebay and I promptly snagged a great deal. Come to today and I get a fresh Chicony in a brand new box. I lay it down on my desk, type out my test sentence, and... I am impressed. These switches were definitely nowhere near as bad as I thought they would be. They're nice and tactile, smooth, with almost no scratch. Now it wasn't the most refined keyfeel out there, but I'd say for a budget vintage tactile it punches above it's weight. Anyone else tried MMM? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten, Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen, Fourteen, Fifteen, Sixteen, Seventeen, Eighteen, Nineteen, Twenty... Yeah that seems about right.

You must have been talking to Andy. I haven't tried any that I'm aware of. I have almost accidentally bought them many times. They seem common enough. The mixed reviews make me wonder if they're like Futaba MA and are extremely condition-dependent.

... I need to stop stocking up on random weird old mechanisms just to try them, but people just keep on tempting me.

I am too poor for topre :P I will say it is comparable to zealios V2s, which is like the poor man's expensive key switch.

Best bit of advice I ever got was to never form an opinion on a keyswitch without trying it yourself. So I did just that. definitely worth the money. The bigger keys definitely have a problem with binding but any key with stabs is good as golden.

That's kind of a universal constant for all subjects. Don't follow the crowd without justification. I disagree with Chyros on a number of things.

But of course. Note I didn't say that Chyros was "right" about MMM and that thus you were "wrong". What I said was that it is interesting how different Caesar's experience was from Chyros'. Obvious implication: so now the question is, why was it so different. Rather than answering questions, this thread has generated more questions which in turn demand answers. :)

Even if he shouldn't generalize from his personal experience, Chyros is at least right about his own MMM board, as anybody who watches his video can at least plainly see how badly the switches on his particular board bind despite its apparent cleanliness and good condition.

I have no opinion on these switches. I have never tried them. Enough people have said that they like them that I'm interested. I just shouldn't add yet another beige board to the pile.
