HHKB case/wrist rest idea - neoprene wrap.
« on: Wed, 13 October 2010, 10:41:37 »
I knew there had to be a simple and cheap way to protect a HHKB during transport, and I think I've finally cracked it. There are neoprene wraps for wrapping around cameras, lenses, etc. I bought one sized around 50cm square.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130312044752

As I took it out of the mailing envelope, I noticed it was already folded to nicely match the width of the HHKB. It could be used as a very thick wrist rest in this form:

To cut down the height you could unroll it a bit and put some under the keyboard:

There are many ways to fold it, or use it fully unwrapped as a mat/wrist rest.

Or you can simply use it for its intended purpose, protecting your valuable item. There are Velcro-type strips to secure it:

Wrapped as above most of the layers are above the key caps, giving these most fragile parts the most protection.

It may not be as convenient or classy as the Waterfield Sleeve, but it's easier to get, cheaper, and more versatile. And guaranteed to fit! Anyway, for only £5 delivered there's no excuse for leaving your HHKB unprotected when you take it out on the road.

The main issue I would have with transporting my HHKB (or other treasured board) in a fabric wrap is that I would feel that the keys could be pressed too strongly during transit if I was not careful and that this could lead to damage. I don't know how logic this fear is. I have retained the original box for my HHKB and have purchased boxes for other boards that hopefully offer more structural rigidity and a greater ability to store in a stacked format. If I was transporting boards on a day-to-day basis then I suspect that a hard carrying case might be employed in conjunction, perhaps, with some foam lining in order to prevent damage from impacting the sides of the case.

Having typed all of this I must probably admit that I believe myself to be somewhat overprotective of a couple of my favourite boards. Is there a board which allows the user to 'lock off' the keys so that the switches are not actuated during transit? I am fairly sure that the idea would repulse me in reality.

Could always put a keyboard roof on before wrapping it (or whatever.)

An ideal solution would be a Pelican case, but none are the right size for the HHKB alone.

neopren is bad if it touches particular areas for more than ~6 hours.

you will also sweat alot with your hands
