Suggestions for ergonomic mouse
« on: Tue, 19 July 2011, 12:24:28 »
I started working about 2 month ago. My mouse wrist has been feeling a bit sore lately, and I'm a bit worried. Any suggestions for an ergonomic mouse? Will a trackball be easier on my wrist? I've tried the logitech m570 in store. It felt really comfortable, but how are the long term results? Thanks.

I use the hippus handshoe mouse. Great for people with big hands. I love it.

The M570 isn't too bad an approach really. Thumb-driven ball, some tilt. OK, the scroll wheel is in the same crappy location is it always is, but hey, you can't have everything. No idea why there only is a wireless version though, it's not like you'd need to move a trackball around all that much.
Hardware in signatures clutters Google search results. There should be a field in the profile for that (again).

This message was probably typed on a vintage G80-3000 with blues. Double-shots, baby. :D

Trackball is the way to go if you want to give your wrist a break from mouse abuse. It was really a blessing for my wrist back when I played a lot of Diablo 2. Now I switch in between mice and trackballs depending on what computing task I am performing.

As far as logitech trackballs are concerned, I personally feel that the trackman marble gives better cursor control due to its larger ball size as well as the use of ur fingers instead of ur thumb. But the scroll wheel of M570 really gives it an edge over the trackman marble. I own both of them and like them both.

I've tried lots of different type of input devices: all type of mouses, vertical mouses, ergo-click, trackballs and rollermouse.

Clicking the mouse is the main action that makes my hand sore and tires me out.

What I've found useful is switching input devices when my hands start getting sore.

The one input devices that I can use the longest is the rollermouse. I think because it's placement is such that I use it with both hands.
Also the clicking is done with the thumbs and not the index finder.

The bad thing with the rollermouse is the scroll wheel. It's no different than any other scroll wheel on a regular mouse but I'm so used to the fast logitech scroll wheel that anything else seems snail paced.

A rollermouse with the logitech scroll wheel would be ideal.

if you find clicking the mouse is the sore part, check out where i modded a deathaddler with a cherry switch, it alleviated my index click finger, actually from day one it went from sore (over weeks of annoyance) to "WOW".
i've since modded a cm storm with both left and right click cherry switches, all smooth and nice, btw my mouse switches required 70g to activate, cherries are 45. That's why mouse finger is sore imo.

Just saw your post. That looks really cool.

How easy/hard is it to do?

depends, if you know how to use a dremel and have one, if you know how to desolder/solder and have one and if you have a hotglue gun then it'll take 30mins. (40 if you want to file down stuff to make it smooth)

i just finished a double switch and posted it for oc to see

Might want to consider using a tablet.. moving and clicking with a pen seems much more natural for your body compared to a mouse..

I've been kicking around modifying a rollermouse I have with a Logitech Hyperscroll I bought just for that purpose. I took a brief look at it, but have not easily "seen" how it will work. It's still on the table as a project though.

This is not really an option for me at work because I am on a workstation with multiple displays. But I might consider getting a tablet for personal use.

I don't think clicking the mouse is my main problem. I tend to not move my arm a lot when using my mouse. This results in a lot of movement of my wrist bending left to right and vise versa. This problem is especially relevant on multiple displays. I am going to go for the logitech m570 or maybe another trackball.

Thanks for all the help everyone!
