Hey Guys!

This is my first post here at Geekhack... I have been a long time stalker but never post.. :D

I just ordered a Steelseries 6Gv2 and am waiting for it to come in... I have read great reviews of this keyboard and decided to give it a try...

I currently own a Filco tenkeyless with browns and love it but decided I want to go back to a full size and wanted to try the cherry blacks as I do mainly gaming...

What do you guys think of this keyboard? Have I made a mistake? :D

Thanks,
Jason

Well, I like mine a lot, it's a very solidly constructed gaming-board .
The keycaps could easily be better and the rather un-usual physical layout makes
changing keys a bit more tricky than a Filco, but then it cost me less than half of
what a Filco would, so ...

Welcome to Geekhack! Please let us know what you think of the Chery MX Blacks when you get yours. I want a MX Black switch keyboard too, but I want to try the Cherry Blue first. I have always heard that blacks are good for gaming but not for typing.

Filco Majestouch Cherry MX Brown 104 key, Unicomp Spacesaver 104, Rosewill RK-9000RE (Cherry MX Red), Leopold 660C Mini Capacitive keyboard, HHKB Type S, Logitech Illuminated Keyboard

Keypads:
Leopold 210TP Mechanical Keypad (Cherry MX Red), Leopold FC210TP/NB Mechanical Keypad (Cherry MX Brown)

Other Keyboards I have tried:
Filco Majestouch Cherry MX Red, Leopold  FC500RR/AB Linear Touch Cherry MX Red, Razer Blackwidow Ultimate, Razer Blackwidow Ultimate Stealth Edition, Realforce 103U/UB, Realforce 103U Black All 55g, Noppoo Choc Mini 84 Mechanical Cherry MX Black keyboard, Noppoo Choc Mini 84 Mechanical Cherry MX Red keyboard (white and black color versions), PLU G3000 NKRO keyboard (white w/ Cherry MX Red switches), Dell 101AT (black Alps switches), Mattias Mini Quiet Pro (modified white Alps switches), KBT Pure Pro, (2)Happy Hacking Keyboard Professional 2, Leopold FC210TP/CB Tactile Click Cherry MX Blue Tenkey pad

For typing, get blues. I'm using black for gaming and i cant say i dont like typing on them. You can reach 140 wpm on blacks, but...it does hurt. :)

Thank you guys!

I just got a email saying it was shipped so I cant wait to try it! I do love the browns but really wanted something a tad stiffer for gaming.. I do think I am going to miss the tenkeyless layout... Im a noob to mechanical keyboards but dang since the day my filco arrived I have wanted to kill this dell sk-8155 at work... I think my filco might be coming here...

At least the blank keys will keep people from using my keyboard! HAHAHA

For typing, get topres or buckling springs.

Are blues good for gaming, too, if one wants those?

My personal opinion is that they are 'usable' ..
But then, so are rubber-dome keyboards.
In the end this question is a matter of more or less subjective personal preferences .

Mine finally arrived midweek and i've fell in love with this keyboard. Huge step up from the P.O.S Lycosa i had earlier. I had a chance to try out the BlackWidow and while i liked the feel of the blues, i don't think i could've lived with the clickey noise for more than a week.

Also the 6gv2 seemed to be the only keyboard that would fit my budget without having to pay an arm and a leg for shipping fees and such.

Perhaps down the road i'd like to buy a MX Blue board and possibly a MX Red as well (Pretty sure those are the lighter blacks).

I think you'd be very happy with the board as it is just well built and does what it is supposed to do perfectly.

Gaming is a priority of mine and I absolutely love linear switches for that

I'm actually starting to really like typing on it as well.  I might still give a slight edge to my BlackWidow's cherry blues for that but there's just something about the baby-butt-smooth action of linear that I just love.

Mine sits in a box, on a shelf. Just prefer the blues for StarCraft so much more than the Blacks. A lot of people really swear by them for gaming though, so I am likely the exception. And could be that I learned to type on an old Model M as well, so the feel just seems more natural to be versus linear switches.

Slightly off topic, how much do you guys think a slightly used 6Gv2 is worth?

This was my first impressions, when i got the keyboard.

Now couple of weeks later, i feel much more comfortable with 6gv2. It really does what it is supposed to very well and you get what you paid for - a solid mechanical keyboard with MX black switches, with great build quality, minimalistic design (i love it) and no extra gimmick.

I hope you'll enjoy it :)

My 6gv2 arrived last week ^.^  I think it's great value for the money, the keyboard is definitely very heavy and the rubbers under it make it very stable too.  I haven't tested the nkro features but so far i had no troubles. The keys are quite hard to press (they  use cherry blacks) which, again, is really great for gaming (for me anyway, that way i don't press any keys by accident).

If i had to criticize it i'd say that the letters on the key caps tend to fade quite fast (at least the keys i use for gaming). I don't mind much but some may. Also i'm having second thoughts about the type of switch:  as i said, for gaming it's great for me, but i have also some more serious activities on my computer, and i'm wondering if i shouldn't have chosen a keyboard with cherry mx browns instead. That being said, it's all rather new, this is my first mechanical keyboard and i really like the change from the microsoft comfort curve keyboard i had. I guess i'll give it a few weeks to get used to new keys and layout. Still, the zowie celeritas looks quite interesting too ^.^

Time will tell (and budget too of course...).
