IBM Space Saver 2 vs. Realforce 86U
« on: Sat, 29 January 2011, 22:07:54 »
I currently have a IBM Space Saver 2 rubber dome keyboard and like the compact design. However, typing on it leaves a bit to be desired. I am interested in the Realforce 86U Tenkeyless and was wondering if I would feel a noticeable difference with the Realforce--in a good way that is. Comments anyone?

Welcome to GeekHack marco! Yes, there will definitely be a noticeable difference. I would say if you consider that keyboard 'fine/ok' but are looking for more, the 86U would be a good choice for you. I went from a Key Tronic (one of the best rubber dome keyboards) which I thought was 'fine' to a Realforce, and I was very happy that I did.

You will notice quite the difference between the two.

I don't have much to say about the IBM SSK2 but I have typed on a fair share of IBM scissor switches.
With the 86U you will gain longer switch travel, tactility, a much crisper typing experience and most importantly, the addictive "thock thock thock" sound as you type!

I also used to think Keytronic keyboard is wonderful. But now I am typing on a Compaq 11800 and I notice the big difference in responsiveness. I use less force to tap the keys, I type faster and my hands are less tired.
Keyboard: Filco MJ1 104 brown, Filco MJ2 87 brown, Compaq MX11800, Noppoo Choc Brown/Blue/Red, IBM Model M 1996, CMStorm Quickfire Rapid Black
Layout: Colemak experience, speed of 67wpm

Yea, the Compaq MX1800 is definitely a good, inexpensive mechanical replacement for a KeyTronic. Switch feel is quite a bit lighter than Topre though.

Thanks for your input. I guess it wouldn't be as hard of a decision on the Realforce 86U if Elite Keyboards didn't have such a medieval return policy. So, I am just trying to gather as much information prior to purchase. I do have an Unicomp 104 keyboard keyboard and although I like the tactility, the size of the keyboard is too large and the noise does get annoying. It makes it hard to type while on boring conference calls. So, I shelved the Unicomp and dusted off the IBM Space Saver 2. As far as I am concerned, the 10 keyless layout is much more natural and balanced with mouse placement. I was hoping the Realforce would give me more defined keystrokes with tactility while being more quiet than the Unicomp and less mushy than my IBM Space Saver 2.

I'm interested in the Black Realforce 86U, but don't think the dark letters on the keycaps are very readable. Are there replacement black keycaps that have white lettering?

I think there are replacement keycaps for the HHKB (also Topre) but they don't fit Realforce keyboards.

White keycaps wouldn't get shiny so quickly btw.

Also don't expect to be completely blown away by the Topre. It's "just" a very very good rubberdome.
*~Unicomp and Topre fan~*
I have:
Unicomp Customizer 105 German
Realforce 105GR
Unicomp Spacesaver German/Ansi hybrid(Current favorite)
I want:
Realforce 88GER
I used to have:
DAS Model S Ultimate EU (Sold)

I would get white if you're worried about it. At this time there is no real recommend solution for topre keycap replacements. Most of the hhkb ones will fit on it though.

I would like to note the stock keycaps are very nice, then again they better be considering the price.  Some of the nicest second to only double shots maybe.
I like Topre!
